There is no single unlocked phone that is best for every international trip. The Google Pixel 10 is a current option worth considering, and the iPhone 17 family is another, but whether either will work depends on the exact regional model, its cellular bands and SIM setup, and the carrier or travel plan you intend to use.
Before buying, verify those details for your destination. “Unlocked,” “supports eSIM,” and “works on a local network” are separate claims—not interchangeable guarantees.
What makes a phone suitable for international travel?
A phone needs to pass three independent checks: it must not be carrier-locked, its hardware must support the destination network, and the carrier or plan must accept the phone and its SIM arrangement. Apple makes the same distinction in its guidance for using eSIM while traveling: check that the provider supports eSIM on the plan and that the iPhone supports the relevant network bands in the destination country (Apple Support).

- Unlocked status: Confirm with the seller or carrier that the specific handset is unlocked. eSIM capability alone does not prove it is unlocked.
- Cellular compatibility: Match the exact phone model’s LTE and 5G bands with the destination carrier’s supported bands. A shared product-family name does not guarantee identical radios across regions.
- Plan and SIM support: Check the provider’s compatibility list, activation requirements, and coverage for your destination, as well as whether the phone can use the SIM or eSIM configuration you need.
Even when a phone has compatible bands, that does not guarantee identical service everywhere: coverage and available service depend on the local carrier and plan.

Which unlocked phones should travelers consider?
Google Pixel 10: a reasonable Android candidate
Tom’s Guide includes the Pixel 10 in its current unlocked-phone guide (Tom’s Guide). Google’s official hardware specifications provide the more important travel check: look up the exact regional model number, its LTE and 5G bands, and eSIM availability (Google Pixel hardware specifications). Do not assume every Pixel 10 sold worldwide has the same cellular configuration.
In August 2025, US Pixel 10, Pixel 10 Pro, and Pixel 10 Pro XL models launched as eSIM-only devices, according to GSMA’s The Mobile Economy 2026 (GSMA report). That makes checking the market-specific SIM setup particularly important if you want a physical SIM slot.

iPhone 17 family: an alternative for iOS users
Apple says an unlocked eSIM-only iPhone can be activated with network providers in different countries or regions, while also directing customers to verify plan eSIM support and the phone’s band compatibility. Its guidance includes a specific regional restriction: an eSIM from a mainland China network provider cannot be used on a device purchased outside mainland China (Apple Support).

Neither phone family is established as a universal travel winner. The available product guidance is not a comparative international field test, so it cannot establish real-world reception, battery endurance, or durability across countries.
How to check whether a specific model will work overseas
- Identify the exact handset. Ask for the full model number and the country or region where it was sold. Do not rely only on a product-family name such as “Pixel 10” or “iPhone 17.”
- Confirm it is unlocked. Get confirmation from the seller or carrier for that handset. An unlocked phone may still lack the bands or SIM configuration needed for your trip.
- Compare its bands with the destination carrier. Use Google’s hardware table for the exact Pixel variant or Apple’s compatibility guidance for the iPhone. Then check the destination carrier’s own supported-band information. Repeat this for each country and carrier you might use.
- Check the SIM arrangement. Find out whether that regional model has a physical SIM tray, eSIM, or eSIM-only design. If you plan to keep your home line active while using a travel line, confirm that the exact phone and both providers support your intended setup.
- Verify the plan and activation rules. Ask the home carrier, local carrier, or travel eSIM provider whether it accepts the phone and supports service in the destination. Check when and how an eSIM can be installed or activated; eSIM support on the handset does not ensure support from a particular plan.
- Choose the connectivity approach for the trip. Compare home-carrier roaming, a local plan, and a regional travel plan against your destinations, trip length, data use, voice and SMS needs, and hotspot requirements. Without those trip details, there is no responsible way to name one plan as best.
Is eSIM a good choice for international travel?
eSIM can make switching plans easier because it avoids handling a removable card, but it does not bypass carrier, device, or regional restrictions. Confirm that the exact phone model supports the eSIM arrangement you want and that the provider supports both the device and plan in your destination. Apple also documents the mainland China restriction for provider eSIMs on devices purchased outside mainland China (Apple Support).

If you need a physical SIM—because a local provider requires one, for example—check for a tray on the exact regional model before purchasing. GSMA’s account of eSIM-only Pixel 10 models in the US and eSIM-only iPhone 17 models in multiple international markets illustrates why the name of a phone family is not enough to determine its SIM options (GSMA report).
What else should shape your choice?
Once a model passes the compatibility checks, weigh your personal priorities: price, camera, size, operating system, and battery life. Those are valid buying considerations, but the available sources do not provide a travel-specific comparative score for them. Likewise, a compatible band list is a useful screening tool, not proof of reception or coverage at every stop on an itinerary.
