There is no single source-independent winner among ultra-short-throw (UST) projectors in 2026. ProjectorCentral ranks the Hisense PX3-PRO first in its October list, while other current guides emphasize different models and priorities. The right pick depends on room brightness, screen and placement, gaming needs, and total system cost—not ranking position alone.

Which UST projector is best for your room?

Need Model to consider Why it fits Important qualification
Dark-room movies and a broad feature set Hisense PX3-PRO ProjectorCentral ranks it #1 in its October 2026 list; RTINGS finds its contrast and color punch stronger than the Epson LS800’s in their comparison. The ranking is ProjectorCentral’s, not a universal verdict. Its listed price snapshot was $2,498.
Less light-controlled living room Epson EpiqVision Ultra LS800 RTINGS says the Epson is noticeably brighter than the PX3-PRO and better suited to rooms that are not light-controlled. In that comparison, the PX3-PRO has much better contrast, punchier colors, and a broader feature set.
Premium large-screen option Hisense L9Q or AWOL Vision Aetherion Max ProjectorCentral lists the L9Q at 5,000 ANSI lumens and the Aetherion Max at 3,300 ISO lumens; What Hi-Fi recommends the Aetherion Max as its current UST pick. Brightness figures use different measurement conventions and should not be treated as directly equivalent. Check screen-bundle contents and current regional pricing.
Large-screen gaming and TV replacement Hisense PX4 Pro What Hi-Fi positions it for home cinema, casual TV replacement, and gaming; its specification panel lists 1ms at 240Hz. The review flags no 4K/120Hz gaming, some color inconsistency, and susceptibility to the rainbow effect.
Tighter budget Formovie Cinema Edge TechRadar identifies it as a lower-budget option and describes it as good value. Its guide snapshot lists $1,799 / £1,799; prices and availability can vary. TechRadar notes HDR-format and color compromises versus premium competitors.

These are use-case recommendations drawn from source-specific rankings and reviews, not results from a single side-by-side test. ProjectorCentral’s October 4, 2026 roundup ranks the PX3-PRO #1, L9Q #2, and AWOL Vision Aetherion Max #3; TechRadar, RTINGS, and What Hi-Fi assess different models and priorities. ProjectorCentral’s October 2026 list, RTINGS’ LS800/PX3-PRO comparison, What Hi-Fi’s PX4 Pro review, and TechRadar’s UST guide should be read as distinct editorial judgments.

How does the PX3-PRO compare with the Epson LS800?

The decisive difference in RTINGS’ 2026 comparison is the room. The Epson LS800 is noticeably brighter and performs better where ambient light is harder to control. The PX3-PRO offers much better contrast, punchier colors, and more features, making it the stronger fit in a darker viewing room. Both are pixel-shift 4K laser UST projectors.

Neither conclusion makes one model universally better: a bright room can wash out perceived contrast, while a darker room makes black level and contrast more apparent. Treat this as a comparison between these two models under RTINGS’ assessment, not a guarantee for every screen, room, or setup.

What do the leading models offer?

Hisense PX3-PRO

ProjectorCentral’s October 4, 2026 roundup lists the PX3-PRO at $2,498, with 4K DLP, a laser light source, and 3,000 ANSI lumens, and places it first. The same roundup reports that Sammie Prescott, Jr. reviewed it in September 2024, giving it Editor’s Choice and four stars. That earlier review is not a fresh 2026 test. TechRadar reports support for 4K/120Hz and 1080p/240Hz gaming, plus Google TV and a 50W Harman Kardon-designed sound system; check regional software and service availability.

Hisense L9Q

ProjectorCentral’s October 2026 list ranks the L9Q second and lists 5,000 ANSI lumens, 4K DLP, a June 2025 model date, and a $4,498 price snapshot. The roundup summarizes its October 2025 review as Highly Recommended. Confirm whether a screen is included in the package available in your country before comparing its price with a projector-only offer.

AWOL Vision Aetherion Max

ProjectorCentral ranks the Aetherion Max third and lists 4K DLP, 3,300 ISO lumens, a July 2026 model date, and a $3,799 price snapshot; it marks the model Highly Recommended. What Hi-Fi calls it its current recommended UST and reported price drops in the UK and US at its review time. Those snapshots may not align, so check local pricing rather than treating either figure as a current offer.

Hisense PX4 Pro

What Hi-Fi’s September 2026 review describes the PX4 Pro as suited to home cinema, casual TV replacement, and large-screen gaming. Its listed launch prices were £2,499, $3,999, and AU$4,499. The review’s specification panel describes pixel-shifted 4K, a claimed image size up to 200 inches, 1ms at 240Hz, Dolby Vision, HDR10+, HDR10, HLG, and a 66-watt 4.0.2-channel speaker system. These are product or manufacturer specifications, not independent guarantees of performance; the reviewer also notes that it lacks 4K/120Hz gaming, has some color inconsistency, and can show the rainbow effect.

Formovie Cinema Edge

TechRadar’s guide, updated August 20, 2026, lists the Cinema Edge as a lower-budget 4K option with 1,900 ISO lumens, an 80–150-inch projection range, and three HDMI 2.1 inputs including eARC. Its guide price snapshot is $1,799 / £1,799. TechRadar considers it good value but notes compromises in HDR format support and color compared with more premium rivals; verify current local price and stock.

How to compare UST projectors fairly

Room light and brightness

Lumen figures are useful clues, not a complete picture of room performance. Preserve the measurement label: the L9Q’s 5,000 ANSI lumens and Aetherion Max’s 3,300 ISO lumens come from different conventions and are not direct equivalents. Ambient light, screen material, image size, and image settings also affect the result. The LS800/PX3-PRO comparison provides a practical example of how brightness and contrast can point to different choices.

Screen size, throw distance, and placement

UST means the projector is designed to create a large image from a short throw; it does not mean every model fits every console or cabinet. ProjectorCentral defines the scope of its UST roundup as projectors with a throw ratio below 0.4. Before buying, use the chosen model’s own specifications to confirm the throw distance for your target image size and whether the projector will fit your furniture depth. A compatible UST screen is part of the system: match it to the projector’s geometry and room conditions rather than assuming a generic screen will work well.

Resolution, contrast, and HDR

“4K” alone does not establish identical image detail or processing. The PX3-PRO and LS800 are pixel-shift 4K according to RTINGS; What Hi-Fi explicitly describes the PX4 Pro’s 4K as pixel-shifted. Compare how the model handles contrast, black level, color, and the HDR formats you use, not just the resolution label.

Gaming modes

Match the advertised mode to the console or PC output you plan to use. PX3-PRO support reported by TechRadar includes 4K/120Hz and 1080p/240Hz, while What Hi-Fi lists 1ms at 240Hz for the PX4 Pro and notes that it does not support 4K/120Hz. A fast 1080p mode is not the same as 4K at a high refresh rate; check the exact resolution, refresh rate, and input-lag conditions for your intended setup.

Built-in sound and smart TV

Integrated audio and a built-in TV platform can simplify a setup, but they do not establish how a projector compares with dedicated speakers or external streamers. TechRadar reports Google TV and a 50W Harman Kardon-designed system for the PX3-PRO; What Hi-Fi lists a 66W system tuned by Devialet for the PX4 Pro. Confirm streaming-service and software availability in your region.

Total system cost

Compare offers in the same currency and region, and include any UST-compatible screen, audio, installation, and warranty costs. The prices in the cited guides are snapshots or launch prices, not promises of current retail pricing. ProjectorCentral lists screens separately from projectors, underscoring that screen choice is a separate part of the purchase.

Which one should you buy?

  • Choose the PX3-PRO as a candidate for darker-room movie viewing and gaming features, especially if its current local price and placement requirements work for you.
  • Consider the Epson LS800 when brightness in a less controlled room is the priority; in RTINGS’ comparison, it gives up contrast and color punch relative to the PX3-PRO.
  • Look at the L9Q or Aetherion Max for premium options, but check regional bundle contents, screen inclusion, and current price before concluding either is better value.
  • Consider the PX4 Pro if its gaming, image-size, HDR, and built-in-audio specifications fit your needs, while accounting for the review’s noted limitations.
  • Consider the Cinema Edge if budget is the leading constraint and its HDR and color trade-offs are acceptable.
