For a standard PS4, a responsive 1080p TV is enough; you do not need 4K or a high-refresh-rate screen. PS4 Pro is the only PS4 model that outputs 4K, so Pro owners should check for 4K/60Hz support and the correct HDMI input. For a current US shortlist, RTINGS names the TCL QM6K as its general budget pick and lists the Hisense 55U6SF Pro and TCL QM5K among its under-$500 choices. Those are guide recommendations, not guaranteed prices or universal best buys.
What matters most in a PS4 TV
- Game Mode and input lag: A responsive picture matters more to PS4 play than a headline refresh-rate number. RTINGS describes less than 15 ms as a good input-lag result for 4K/60Hz; this is its guidance, not a universal standard. See RTINGS’ input-lag methodology.
- Resolution: A 1080p set matches the needs of a standard PS4. A 4K TV can accept and scale its signal, while PS4 Pro can output 4K when the display and connection are configured for it.
- HDR in practice: HDR10 support meets the format requirement, but the label alone does not tell you how convincing HDR will look. Brightness, contrast, reflections, and local dimming affect the experience; compare those traits in the specific model review.
- Inputs and room fit: Check screen size against viewing distance, the total price in your market, and which HDMI ports support the features you need. For a future console or PC, HDMI 2.1, 120Hz or higher, and VRR may matter; they are not necessary to improve standard PS4 output.

The models below are named in RTINGS’ 2026 recommendation pages. Prices and stock change, and model codes or specifications can vary by region; confirm the exact size, local SKU, returns policy, and current price before buying.

Choose by PS4 model and budget
If you have a standard PS4
Put responsiveness, a suitable screen size, and a price that fits your market ahead of 4K/120Hz or VRR. A 1080p TV is sufficient; choosing a 4K set is also an option, but the standard PS4 does not output 4K.

If you have a PS4 Pro
Choose a display that supports 4K/60Hz if you want the Pro’s 4K output. Use the TV’s designated 4K-capable HDMI input and enable 4K on both devices. PlayStation says the HDMI cable supplied with PS4 Pro is suitable. Follow the PS4 Pro 4K and HDR setup guidance.

If HDR is your priority
Check more than the HDR10 label: look for the model’s measured brightness and contrast performance and whether it has local dimming. The cited budget roundups discuss these picture characteristics, but HDR format support alone does not establish strong perceived HDR.
Set up PS4 HDR or PS4 Pro 4K
Enable HDR on either PS4 model
PlayStation says all PS4 consoles support HDR video output for gameplay and streaming. HDR requires an HDR10-capable 2K or 4K TV, HDR-enabled content, PS4 system software 7.0 or later, and a Premium HDMI cable. Use the TV manual to identify the HDR-enabled HDMI input and enable its HDR, UHD, or Deep Color option if required.

- Connect the PS4 directly to the TV with a Premium HDMI cable; do not route it through another device when setting up HDR.
- On PS4, open Settings > Sound and Screen > Video Output Settings.
- Set HDR and Deep Color Output to Automatic.
- Check Video Output Information to confirm HDR support is detected.

Enable 4K on PS4 Pro
- Connect the Pro to the TV’s designated 4K HDMI input.
- Enable 4K on both the TV and PS4 Pro, following their respective setup menus.
- Confirm the TV supports 4K/60Hz and check the cable and input settings if the 4K signal does not appear.
For connection problems, verify the port, device settings, and cable chain against the manufacturer’s setup guidance.

How to make the final choice
- Identify whether you own a standard PS4 or PS4 Pro; this determines whether 4K output is relevant.
- Set a total budget and choose a screen size that fits your room and viewing distance.
- Compare Game Mode input lag at 60Hz and check HDMI port placement and capabilities.
- If HDR matters, assess brightness and contrast performance alongside HDR10 compatibility.
- For future hardware, weigh HDMI 2.1, high refresh rate, and VRR separately rather than treating them as PS4 requirements.
