There is no single best turntable for every listener. For a straightforward first setup, consider the Rega Planar 1; for an affordable manual deck with a clear upgrade path, the Pro-Ject Primary E is a strong pick; and for USB recording plus three speeds, the Audio-Technica AT-LP120XUSB is the most flexible choice in this shortlist. Check the phono-stage requirements before buying: the Primary E and Pro-Ject E1.2 do not include one.

Which turntable should you choose?

Choose the Pro-Ject Primary E for a budget manual deck

What Hi-Fi? names the Primary E its best budget turntable and describes it as easy to set up and suited to newcomers who prioritise listening over extra features. Its manual controls mean you operate the record rather than relying on automatic start and return. It is a sensible shortlist choice if you want a basic belt-drive deck and do not need wireless or digital output.

Account for the missing phono stage in your system budget. You will need an amplifier with a phono input or a separate phono preamp between the turntable and an ordinary line-level input.

Choose the Rega Planar 1 if ease of setup comes first

Rega’s product information describes the Planar 1 as plug and play and says setup is possible in under 30 seconds. That is Rega’s setup claim, not a measured comparison against the other models here. The factory-fitted Carbon cartridge and automatic bias adjustment reduce the number of setup tasks a first-time owner has to handle.

StereoNET lists it as its 2026 First Turntable Overall. Treat that as the publication’s recommendation, not a guarantee that it will suit every amplifier, room or listening preference.

Choose the AT-LP120XUSB to digitise records or play 78 rpm discs

The AT-LP120XUSB is the only model in this selection whose listed specifications combine USB output, a selectable built-in phono preamp and 78 rpm support. Its direct-drive motor, pitch control and manual operation also make it a different proposition from the belt-drive starter options.

Consider the E1.2 as another affordable manual option

AVForums presents the Pro-Ject E1.2 as a strong-value affordable hi-fi turntable and gives it a 9/10 rating. It was released in 2025, so it remains a recent option in a 2026 shortlist. Like the Primary E, it has no included phono stage: plan for compatible phono amplification before ordering.

Move up to the Planar 3 RS or Planar 6 RS for a higher-budget Rega

AVForums gives both RS models a 10/10 rating. The Planar 3 RS pairs an RB330 tonearm with an Nd5 cartridge; the Planar 6 RS has an RB880 tonearm, an Nd9 cartridge and dual belts. These are higher-priced upgrade candidates, not beginner picks established by the same plug-and-play setup details Rega provides for the Planar 1.

Do you need a phono preamp?

A turntable’s cartridge produces a signal that needs phono-stage amplification and equalisation before it can feed a standard line-level input. If your amplifier has a dedicated phono input, connect the turntable there. Otherwise, use an external phono preamp between the turntable and an amplifier or powered speakers with a line input.

  • Pro-Ject Primary E: no phono stage is included.
  • Pro-Ject E1.2: no phono stage is included.
  • Audio-Technica AT-LP120XUSB: its built-in preamp can be switched between phono and line output. Use the appropriate setting for the input you connect to.

The supplied information does not establish whether the Rega models in this guide include a phono stage. Check the exact regional product specification before purchase rather than assuming one is built in.

Belt drive or direct drive: which is better?

Drive type alone does not determine which turntable will sound or work better in your system. The models here illustrate the practical distinction: the Primary E, E1.2 and Rega models listed are belt drive, while the AT-LP120XUSB is direct drive. Choose based on the complete feature set, setup preference and intended use—not on the drive label by itself.

  • For a simple manual listening setup: compare the belt-drive Primary E or E1.2, while budgeting for phono amplification if needed.
  • For USB output, pitch control or 78 rpm: the AT-LP120XUSB has those listed features; none of the other models in this guide is documented here with that combination.
  • For convenience: check whether the exact model offers automatic operation or Bluetooth. The Primary E is manual and has neither USB nor Bluetooth; do not assume those features are standard on a turntable.

How to choose a turntable that fits your system

  1. Match the output to your amplifier or speakers. Identify whether your system has a phono input or needs a line-level signal and external phono preamp. For the AT-LP120XUSB, select phono or line output to match the input.
  2. Decide whether you want manual operation. A manual deck asks you to start and handle playback yourself. If automatic operation is essential, verify it in the exact model’s specifications; it is not listed for the Primary E or AT-LP120XUSB.
  3. Check the speeds you need. The Primary E supports 33⅓ and 45 rpm, the E1.2 and RS models list 33 and 45 rpm or 33⅓ and 45 rpm, and the AT-LP120XUSB adds 78 rpm. Match the deck’s supported speeds to your records.
  4. Look at the cartridge and replacement-stylus path. A supplied cartridge gets you started; compatibility information matters if you expect to replace or upgrade the stylus. Audio-Technica specifically documents VM95-series stylus compatibility for the AT-LP120XUSB.
  5. Prepare a stable place for the deck. Put it on a stable support surface and follow the manufacturer’s setup instructions. Isolation needs depend on the turntable and the room; the supplied specifications do not establish a comparative isolation ranking for these models.
