For hotel Ethernet, public Wi-Fi, and travel work, the right travel router depends on the connection you need and the ports, bands, power, and VPN support you’ll actually use. The GL.iNet Beryl AX and Slate AX are established Wi-Fi 6 candidates; newer Wi-Fi 7 options include the Beryl 7, Slate 7, and TP-Link Roam 7. The available reviews do not use one common test method, so these are use-case picks—not a definitive ranking.

Which travel router works best for hotel Wi-Fi?

A travel router can connect to a hotel’s Ethernet jack or Wi-Fi and create a private Wi-Fi network for your own devices. That can simplify connecting several devices, but the connection method and setup vary by model and by the hotel’s network. For a wired room connection, check the router’s WAN port and whether you need a separate Ethernet cable. For a hotel that offers only Wi-Fi, confirm the model supports joining an existing wireless network and consider whether its login flow will work with the hotel’s captive portal.

The GL.iNet Beryl AX (GL-MT3000) is a compact Wi-Fi 6 option with a 2.5Gbps WAN port and USB 3.0, according to its official product specifications. RTINGS compares it with the Slate AX and reports better range for the Beryl AX; that comparison does not establish that it is best in every hotel or travel setup. [c001]

Which travel router fits different travel needs?

Use case Candidate Relevant details
Compact Wi-Fi 6 travel router GL.iNet Beryl AX (GL-MT3000) 2.5Gbps WAN and USB 3.0 per the manufacturer; RTINGS reports better range than the Slate AX. [c001] [c002]
More wired ports and local storage GL.iNet Slate AX (GL-AXT1800) RTINGS describes three 1Gbps Ethernet ports, USB 3.0, and a microSD slot. It is a Wi-Fi 6 model. [c003]
Newer Wi-Fi 7 option GL.iNet Beryl 7 TechRadar’s September 8, 2026 review describes a pocketable Wi-Fi 7 router with VPN support and USB-C power; the reviewed material does not provide comparable head-to-head results for ranking it against all candidates. [c005]
Wi-Fi 7 with band caveat GL.iNet Slate 7 (GL-BE3600) TechRadar reports 4K QAM and MLO support, but no 6GHz band. [c006]
Fold-flat antenna design TP-Link Roam 7 TechRadar reports dimensions of 126 x 93.5 x 36mm and weight of 250g in its 2026 review. [c007]

What is the difference between the Beryl AX and Slate AX?

Both are Wi-Fi 6 travel routers, but their physical connections favor different needs. The Beryl AX has a 2.5Gbps WAN port and, in RTINGS’ comparison, better range. The Slate AX offers three 1Gbps Ethernet ports and microSD storage, according to RTINGS. Choose based on whether a faster WAN connection and reported range matter more to you, or whether multiple wired devices and local storage are useful.

Is a Wi-Fi 7 travel router worth it?

Wi-Fi 7 may be appealing if you want a newer generation, but the label alone does not tell you which bands a router supports or how it will perform in a hotel. For example, TechRadar reports that the Slate 7 supports 4K QAM and MLO but lacks 6GHz. Check the exact bands and features rather than assuming every Wi-Fi 7 router includes 6GHz. [c006]

Do you need a travel router with a VPN?

A router’s VPN client lets the router connect to a VPN service; it is not the same thing as including a VPN subscription. Before buying, check whether your chosen provider requires a separate account and whether the router supports a protocol the provider offers. Also consider throughput: VPN processing can be a practical constraint, and manufacturer figures should not be treated as independently measured speeds. GL.iNet lists provider selection and model-specific VPN throughput for the Beryl AX on its product page. [c002]

What should you check before buying?

  • Connection modes: Confirm the router supports the hotel’s available connection—Ethernet, joining Wi-Fi, or tethering if that is part of your plan.
  • Ports: Check WAN and LAN port count and speed against your wired devices and connection.
  • Wi-Fi bands: Verify the exact bands, especially if 6GHz matters to you; a Wi-Fi generation label is not enough.
  • Power and portability: Compare dimensions, weight, and power method. USB-C is referenced for the Beryl 7 and Slate 7, but requirements and adapter compatibility are model-specific. Check the exact product’s power specifications and included adapter before relying on a portable charger. [c005] [c006]
  • VPN: Confirm protocol compatibility, account requirements, and realistic throughput for your use.
  • Price and availability: Check current local listings before purchase; prices and stock vary by region and date.

For current technical details, consult the manufacturers’ model specifications and the cited reviews. Because the sources use different review approaches and do not establish a common comparison of all five candidates, treat the table as a shortlist organized by features rather than an overall ranking.
