There is no well-supported, definitive six-laptop ranking for 2026 in the available comparisons: the travel-focused roundup’s recommendation updates end on May 14, 2025. Its tested models remain useful candidates, but they should not be mistaken for verified 2026 winners. For a current-year starting point, TechRadar reviews the MacBook Air 13-inch (M5), reporting 15 hours 30 minutes in its own battery test. The choices below are therefore organized by use case, with model years and evidence limits made clear.
How to choose a laptop for travel
RTINGS identifies size, weight, and battery life as the first travel-laptop requirements. Also consider screen visibility in bright settings, keyboard and touchpad comfort, webcam quality, ports, and biometrics. Compare the weight of the full kit you will carry—not just the computer—by adding its charger and any hub or adapters you need.
Battery figures below are not directly comparable: RTINGS describes light-use results for its older candidates, while TechRadar reports its own test result for the M5 Air. Actual runtime varies with configuration, workload, brightness, and settings. If your work depends on specialist software, check compatibility before choosing a Chromebook or an ARM-based Windows laptop.
Six travel-laptop candidates by use case
| Use case | Candidate and evidence | Key trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Current-year productivity context | Apple MacBook Air 13-inch (M5); TechRadar tested 15 hours 30 minutes. Apple claims up to 18 hours watching Apple TV shows and 15 hours browsing the internet. | Those manufacturer figures describe separate use cases and are not guaranteed real-world runtimes. The cited roundup does not provide a six-device travel comparison. |
| Premium compact work, based on travel-roundup testing | Apple MacBook Pro 14 (M4, 2024); RTINGS reports about 15 hours in light use and describes a bright 120Hz Mini LED display and broad port selection. | It is a premium candidate, and its generation should not be assumed to be the latest in 2026. |
| Windows productivity | Microsoft Surface Laptop 7th Edition 15 (2024); RTINGS reports around 17 hours in light use, a 120Hz display, USB-A, MicroSD, and Wi-Fi 7. | It uses an ARM-based processor, so verify that required applications work. The 15-inch size may not suit every travel setup. |
| Mid-range Windows option | Acer Swift Go 14 (2024); RTINGS reports around 11 hours in light use, a 1080p webcam, fingerprint reader, two Thunderbolt 4 ports, and HDMI. Display options include FHD+ IPS and 2.8K OLED. | The OLED option may use more battery and can suffer burn-in. RTINGS measured 52 °C (125.6 °F) on the underside under intensive tasks. |
| Low-cost browser-focused work | Lenovo IdeaPad Slim 3i Chromebook 14 (2023); RTINGS reports around 12 to 13 hours, Wi-Fi 6E, a 1080p webcam, USB-A, USB-C, and HDMI. | ChromeOS limits application choice. RTINGS notes a small, sometimes unresponsive touchpad and a somewhat mushy keyboard. |
| Flexible tablet-style use | Microsoft Surface Pro 11th Edition (2024); RTINGS lists it as a travel option for media and use in tight spaces, with IPS and OLED display variants. | Keyboard cover and stylus are sold separately. It uses ARM silicon; check app compatibility. RTINGS notes possible OLED burn-in and a visible grid-like effect. |
This is a practical shortlist, not a validated 2026 ranking. The travel roundup also includes the ASUS ROG Zephyrus G14 (2024), a distinct gaming-oriented candidate with 14-inch Ryzen configurations, NVIDIA RTX 40-series graphics up to RTX 4070, and a 120Hz 2.8K OLED display with variable refresh rate. It is not a like-for-like productivity ultraportable: weigh the complete kit, including charger, and account for shorter battery life under gaming workloads before treating it as a general travel pick.
#1 Best Overall
- SLIM. LIGHTWEIGHT. READY TO GO: The all-new slim design is perfect for busy lives on the go.
- SKILLFULLY DESIGNED. MILITARY TOUGH: Built with premium craftsmanship to withstand the occasional drop or ding.
- ALL-DAY, ALL-IN-ONE CHARGING: Power through your school day – and beyond – with a long-lasting 12-hour battery.¹
- 3X FASTER THAN THE PREVIOUS GENERATION OF WIFI: Crush your schoolwork in record time with Wi-Fi that’s three times faster than the previous generation of Wi-Fi.
- YOUR PHONE AND CHROMEBOOK WORK BETTER TOGETHER: Easily transfer files between devices, and control your phone right from your Chromebook.
What to verify before buying
- Exact configuration: CPU, memory, storage, and display variants can differ within the same model family. RTINGS cautions that its tested configurations may not match every retail version.
- Applications: Confirm compatibility for essential programs on ARM-based Windows models; confirm that ChromeOS or available Android apps cover your needs on a Chromebook.
- Display and comfort: Check screen brightness for glare, keyboard and touchpad feel, and webcam quality for calls. For OLED, consider the stated battery and burn-in caveats.
- Ports and packed weight: Make a list of devices you will connect, then include required hubs, adapters, charger, and optional accessories in the weight you compare.
- Price and availability: Check the exact model and configuration in your region. RTINGS’ historical $400–$500 USD range for a Core i3, 8GB, 1080p IPS IdeaPad Slim 3i Chromebook configuration was reported at the time of its roundup; it is not a current quote.
What the evidence can—and cannot—establish
RTINGS says it bought and tested laptops, and its travel roundup explains that recommendations consider test results, price, reader feedback, and availability. Its visible recommendation updates reach May 14, 2025, however, so those picks establish model-specific trade-offs rather than a current 2026 order. TechRadar adds a current-year MacBook Air M5 battery test, and Apple provides manufacturer runtime claims, but neither source supplies a matched six-laptop travel test. Current prices, regional availability, exact configurations, and a definitive 2026 top six are not established here.
