Choose a travel adapter for the sockets at your destination, then separately verify that each device can accept the destination’s electrical supply. A plug adapter changes the shape of the connection; it does not, by itself, convert voltage. For phones, laptops and other USB devices, select a USB-C charger and cable that meet their charging requirements. If you plan to bring a power bank, check the current rules for your airline and route before departure.
Start with the destination socket and your devices
There are two different compatibility questions: will the plug fit the wall socket, and can the device safely use the electrical supply? Solve both before choosing equipment.
- List your destinations. Confirm the socket configuration used in each country against a reliable destination-specific source. A multi-country itinerary may need more than one plug option. Dell’s international travel guidance recommends matching the adapter to the destination socket: Dell’s international charger guidance.
- Read each device’s input rating. Check the label on the device or its power supply and follow the manufacturer’s instructions. A plug that fits does not demonstrate that the device accepts the local mains voltage.
- Check grounding and electrical ratings. Make sure the adapter’s stated voltage and current ratings suit the intended use and that it supports any grounding the device requires. Do not treat “universal” as proof of suitability for every device or destination.
- Match charger and cable to the device. Compare the charger’s output and the cable’s capability with the device’s specifications, especially when charging a laptop or several devices at once.
A plug adapter and a voltage converter are not interchangeable. If a device’s power supply does not accept the destination’s mains input, a simple plug adapter will not fix that mismatch. Use only equipment the device maker says is appropriate.
What to look for in a travel plug adapter
Destination coverage
Verify the exact socket systems covered, rather than relying on a product’s “universal” label. Check that the adapter has the plug arrangement needed for every stop on your itinerary; coverage for one country does not establish coverage for another.

Ratings and grounding
Read the adapter’s voltage and current limits and consider whether it preserves the grounding connection your equipment needs. IEC 60884-2-5:2017 covers travel adaptors within its stated scope—over 50 V through 250 V and current not exceeding 20 A—and includes provisions for adaptors with additional functions and overcurrent protection. Those are limits of the standard’s scope, not consumer recommendations to buy an adapter rated at its maximums. The standard itself does not certify a particular retail product. See the IEC 60884-2-5:2017 listing.
Build and useful extras
Look for clear manufacturer specifications and safety information, and check that any added USB ports or protective features are described rather than assumed. Added ports do not automatically mean an adapter can charge a device at its required speed. Size and weight can matter when packing, but compare the actual product dimensions and ratings; the label “travel” alone does not establish either.

Choosing a USB-C travel charger and cable
USB-C describes a connector and a power-interoperability ecosystem, not a guaranteed charging speed. Match the charger’s output to the needs of the devices you will charge, and ensure the cable supports the intended power level. Count the devices that need to charge simultaneously and check how the charger allocates output across ports; a port count alone does not establish that each device receives its required power.
IEC 62680-1-3:2026 specifies USB Type-C receptacles, plugs and cables, including Power Delivery. IEC 63002:2025 addresses external power-supply interoperability and states that the specification’s power range was increased to 240 W. That standard capability is not a claim that an ordinary travel charger or your device operates at 240 W. Review the relevant standards listings: IEC 62680-1-3:2026 and IEC 63002:2025.

For a laptop, compare the manufacturer’s charging requirement with the charger and cable specifications. For a phone or tablet, use the same check rather than assuming any USB-C charger will deliver the device’s fastest supported charge. Dell also advises checking cable capability for USB-C travel charging in its international charger guidance.

A power bank can provide backup when a socket is unavailable, but it is a lithium battery and is subject to airline restrictions. Under FAA passenger guidance, spare batteries and power banks must be carried in cabin baggage. The FAA says power banks from 101 to 160 Wh require airline approval, and airlines may impose stricter limits. See the FAA battery guidance for passengers.

- Check the power bank’s Wh rating and the airline’s permitted quantity and approval requirements.
- Pack it in cabin baggage, not checked baggage, under FAA guidance.
- Confirm your operating carrier’s rules for the route and do not plan to recharge the power bank during a flight under the ICAO requirements effective 27 March 2026.
A practical packing checklist
- Identify the socket configuration at every destination and choose adapter coverage accordingly.
- Check the input rating of each device and power supply; do not infer voltage compatibility from plug fit.
- Confirm adapter ratings and grounding support for the equipment you intend to connect.
- Match USB-C charger output and cable capability to device specifications and simultaneous charging needs.
- If taking a power bank, verify its Wh rating and current airline and route restrictions before leaving.
