Google Translate is the best overall translation app for most iPhone and iPad owners. It combines unusually broad language coverage with camera, photo, voice, conversation, handwriting, and offline tools at no subscription cost for the core app. Its important limitation is that the advertised coverage—up to 249 languages—does not mean every language supports every feature.

Keep Apple Translate for the simplest built-in and on-device experience, try DeepL for polished written translation, choose Papago for Korean, Japanese, and Chinese workflows, and consider iTranslate Pro if paid offline voice translation and phrasebook features matter more than price. Reverso is the better choice for language learning and contextual examples, while Microsoft Translator is useful online but is not a suitable iPhone or iPad choice if offline translation is a requirement.

This comparison reflects U.S. App Store listings and official support documentation checked around August 10, 2026. Prices, language support, and iOS requirements can change.

There is no single app that leads in language coverage, offline depth, camera recognition, conversation tools, written quality, privacy, and price at the same time. The right choice depends on your language pair and the task you need to complete.

How to read this table: “Offline” is not one feature. Typed translation, camera OCR, speech recognition, spoken playback, conversation mode, saved phrases, and document translation can all have different requirements for the same language.

Our recommendations by use case

  • One free app for most trips: Google Translate.
  • Apple-native and privacy-oriented option: Apple Translate, using downloaded languages and On-Device Mode.
  • Polished emails, prose, and documents: Test DeepL first.
  • Korean, Japanese, or Chinese trip: Install Papago and Google Translate as a backup.
  • Paid offline voice and phrasebook package: iTranslate Pro.
  • Language study and contextual examples: Reverso.
  • Offline iPhone/iPad translation: Apple Translate or Google Translate; Papago for supported text pairs.
  • Offline Chinese, Japanese, or Korean camera translation: Waygo is a narrow legacy option, but it is iPhone-only and has not had a listed update since 2017.

1. Google Translate: best overall

Google Translate is the best default installation for most iPhone and iPad users. It covers the widest range of situations: typing a sentence, photographing a menu, speaking into the phone, holding a two-way conversation, transcribing speech, entering handwriting, and preparing language packs before a trip.

The current U.S. App Store listing claims up to 249 languages and lists text, offline, camera, photo, dictation, conversation, transcription, handwriting, and phrasebook features. The listing also requires iOS 18 or later and iPadOS 18 or later; the version shown around August 10, 2026 was 10.31.311. See the current App Store listing for the latest compatibility information.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What it does best

  • Broad language coverage for unusual destinations and language pairs.
  • Instant camera translation, translation from saved photos, and offline camera translation for supported downloaded pairs.
  • Voice dictation, conversations, continuous transcription, and phrasebook saving.
  • Handwriting input for scripts that are difficult to type on an English keyboard.
  • Usable on both iPhone and iPad without a subscription for the core features.

Google also documents a Live Translate mode on iPhone and iPad that can work with or without headphones. Its language availability is narrower than the app’s general text coverage, so do not assume that a language supported for typing is supported for Live Translate. Google’s Live Translate documentation lists the current limits.

Important limitation

The number 249 is a total app-level claim, not a promise of 249 languages for camera OCR, offline use, handwriting, speech recognition, transcription, audio playback, and conversation. Google explicitly says feature support varies by language. Before traveling, select your exact source and target language and check which modes are available.

Privacy and price

The core app is free and does not require a translation subscription. Online features should not be confused with on-device translation: Google’s App Store privacy label reports multiple categories of data that may be linked to the user. Review the listing if the content you are translating is sensitive.

2. Apple Translate: best built-in and on-device option

Apple Translate is the lowest-friction choice for people who want an Apple-integrated app with downloadable language packs. It handles text, speech, conversations, camera translation, favorites, and offline translation. It is especially attractive when you want to avoid installing several third-party apps or want a simple two-person conversation layout on an iPhone or iPad.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Apple’s iOS/iPadOS 26 availability page lists 21 supported language variants for the Translate app. That is substantially narrower than Google’s headline coverage, so Apple Translate is not the best choice for every destination.

Offline and camera features

Apple requires both the input and output languages to be downloaded. You can then turn on On-Device Mode. Apple warns that offline translations may be less accurate than online translations. Its camera mode can translate text in real time, pause the view, zoom, use an image from Photos, copy results, save a translated image, and play either the original or translated text aloud. The Apple Translate settings guide and camera guide describe the current controls.

Conversation mode

Conversation mode supports automatic language detection, face-to-face display, automatic playback, and offline conversations when the required language data is available and On-Device Mode is enabled. For noisy locations, manually selecting both languages and showing the translated text is usually more dependable than automatic detection.

iOS 26 default translation app

On iOS and iPadOS 26, Apple lets you choose a default translation app when a compatible third-party app supports the feature:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Apps.
  3. Tap Translate.
  4. Tap Default Translation App.
  5. Choose the installed translation app.

This setting does not make every app’s language coverage or offline capabilities identical to Apple Translate. It simply chooses the app used for supported system translation actions.

Live Translation with AirPods

Apple’s newer AirPods Live Translation feature is more restricted than the ordinary Translate app. Apple lists these requirements: AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation, AirPods Pro 2 or later, or AirPods Max 2; an iPhone 15 Pro or later; iOS 26 or later; Apple Intelligence enabled; the Translate app installed; and current AirPods firmware. Language and regional availability also apply. Apple says the Live Translation models are built by Apple and run entirely on device, but that does not mean every mode in the normal Translate app is always on-device. Check Apple’s AirPods Live Translation requirements and feature availability table before buying hardware for this feature.

3. DeepL: best candidate for polished written translation

DeepL is the first app to test for an email, article, business message, document, or other tone-sensitive writing. It offers alternative wording, transliteration, file and PDF translation, glossaries, tone controls on applicable paid plans, text-to-speech, camera and photo translation, and DeepL Write for writing improvement. On iPad, it also supports handwriting translation.

This is a recommendation to test DeepL for your language pair and subject—not a claim that it is always the most accurate translator. Results vary with language pair, terminology, domain, register, sentence length, and the original text.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The offline misconception

DeepL should not be advertised as a general offline translator for iPhone or iPad. DeepL’s official mobile documentation verifies that saved favorites can be opened offline, but it does not verify that the app can generate new translations without an internet connection. You can save emergency phrases in advance, but that is different from offline translation.

Compatibility and pricing

The current App Store listing requires iOS/iPadOS 17 or later and showed version 26.37 around August 10, 2026. It lists paid Individual and Individual + Write offers. The extracted listing presents amounts of $10.49 and $104.99 for Individual and $23.99 and $209.99 for Individual + Write, but the billing intervals are not clear in the listing data. Verify the checkout sheet before subscribing. The DeepL favorites documentation explains its confirmed offline behavior.

4. Papago: best specialist for Korean, Japanese, and Chinese workflows

Papago is an important choice for Korean, Japanese, Chinese, and several other East Asian language workflows. It supports text, image, voice, conversations, handwriting, websites, documents, dictionary tools, and offline text translation. Its smaller language set can be an advantage when your trip centers on the languages it supports, because the app is designed around those workflows rather than trying to cover almost every language.

The current App Store listing supports 14 languages, requires iOS/iPadOS 17 or later, and showed version 1.11.16 on July 7, 2026. Its image mode lets you photograph text, highlight a section, and translate that selection. Do not assume that every image, voice, document, or conversation function works offline merely because offline text translation is listed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Documents and privacy caveat

Logged-in users can translate up to 20 documents per month. Each document can contain up to 20,000 characters and be up to 20 MB. Document translation is listed for Korean, English, Japanese, Simplified Chinese, and Traditional Chinese. These limits and language restrictions make Papago useful for short travel documents, but not necessarily for a large archive.

For certain Vietnamese, Thai, Indonesian, Russian, and Italian voice or conversation workflows, the App Store listing says speech-recognition permission involves Apple and that voice data is transmitted to Apple under Apple’s policy. Review the permission prompt and privacy information before using voice mode with sensitive conversations.

5. iTranslate: best paid offline travel package

iTranslate is a feature-heavy paid option, not the best free app. Its official materials claim more than 100 online languages, 41 offline text languages, and five offline voice languages. Offline mode, voice mode, and camera translation are Pro features, along with alternative translations, verb conjugations, and dictionary functions.

The exact offline voice count has appeared inconsistently across iTranslate materials. Treat the five-language figure as the current claim from its dedicated offline page, then verify the downloadable packs in the app before paying or traveling.

Installing offline languages

In the language picker, iTranslate identifies downloadable languages with a blue cloud icon. After downloading, the language shows a green airplane icon. The app’s current support material says account creation and login are no longer supported, so do not plan around an account-based sync workflow. Its compatibility requirement is iOS/iPadOS 14 or later.

Price

The U.S. App Store listing captured around August 10, 2026 included several offers: $7.99/month, $9.99/month, $4.99 or $9.99 weekly options, and $99.99/year. These are listed offers rather than a guaranteed universal price. Check the App Store purchase sheet, trial terms, renewal date, and cancellation settings before subscribing.

6. Reverso: best for language learning and context

Reverso is better understood as a contextual dictionary and language-learning app than as a complete travel translator. It shows translations in real-life example sentences, supports selected-text translation from Safari and other apps, and includes phrasebooks, flashcards, quizzes, conjugations, vocabulary lists, and pronunciation-oriented study features.

The App Store description lists 17 translation languages. Saved vocabulary lists remain available offline, but that should not be confused with general offline generation of new translations. Reverso is particularly useful when you want to understand why a word or phrase is used, compare examples, or build a personal phrasebook before a trip.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

U.S. App Store pricing listed Premium at $4.99/month and an annual option at $39.99 around the research date. The free tier is sufficient for trying the basic workflow; Premium is primarily relevant to the learning tools and usage limits.

7. Microsoft Translator: useful online, not for offline iOS translation

Microsoft Translator remains a credible free online app for text, speech, and image translation, but do not choose it for offline use on an iPhone or iPad. Microsoft’s current iOS FAQ says offline translation is not currently supported, and its language table marks offline support as Android-only.

The current App Store listing requires iOS/iPadOS 17 or later, claims text, speech, and image translation in more than 100 languages, and is free. It also says the multi-device conversation feature has been retired. Older comparison articles that recommend Microsoft for offline iPhone translation or current group conversation rooms are relying on stale information. Consult Microsoft’s current iOS FAQ, language table, and App Store listing.

Other apps worth knowing about

Waygo: narrow offline visual translation

Waygo translates Chinese, Japanese, and Korean into English and has a distinctive offline visual-translation niche. However, it is iPhone-only rather than a universal iPad app, and its App Store version history lists version 6.17 from June 2017 as its last update. It should be treated as a legacy fallback that you test carefully—not as a primary 2026 recommendation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The U.S. App Store lists $11.99 for all languages and separate purchases for Chinese, Japanese, and Korean. Its App Store page is the best place to verify whether it still installs and behaves correctly on your device.

Speak & Translate and Translate Now

Speak & Translate and Translate Now are free downloads with subscription or in-app-purchase offerings. They can be convenient for users who prefer a simplified voice-focused interface, but premium offline, camera, or unlimited-use features mean they should not be labeled simply as free solutions. Compare their current purchase sheets with Google Translate and Apple Translate before subscribing.

Offline translation: what actually works

“Works offline” can mean any of the following:

  • Generating a new translation from typed text.
  • Reading text through the camera or OCR.
  • Recognizing speech without sending audio online.
  • Playing translated speech aloud.
  • Running two-way conversation mode.
  • Opening phrases saved before the trip.
  • Translating a new document without a connection.

Those capabilities are not interchangeable. This is the more accurate offline picture for iPhone and iPad:

App New offline text Offline camera/OCR Offline voice or conversation What is definitely available offline
Apple Translate Yes, for supported downloaded pairs with On-Device Mode Feature and language dependent; test the exact pair Offline conversations are supported when required languages are downloaded On-device translation for supported languages; Apple warns accuracy may be lower
Google Translate Yes, after downloading language packs Yes for supported pairs after downloading both languages Varies by language and mode; test it Downloaded language packs and supported offline camera translation
Papago Advertised for offline text Not established as a universal offline feature Do not assume offline support Offline text translation for supported languages
iTranslate 41 languages claimed Camera is Pro, but general offline camera support is not established here Five offline voice languages claimed Pro offline text and selected offline voice packs
DeepL No verified general offline generation No verified general offline generation No verified general offline generation Saved favorites
Reverso No general offline generation claimed Not its main offline feature Saved lists and phrasebooks Saved vocabulary lists
Microsoft Translator No on current iOS documentation No offline iOS support documented No offline iOS support documented Online translation only for this requirement

For a fully offline trip, the practical order is Apple Translate for the simplest on-device experience, Google Translate for broader language and camera coverage, Papago for supported East Asian text pairs, and iTranslate Pro if offline voice is worth paying for.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How to prepare Apple Translate for offline use

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Apps.
  3. Tap Translate.
  4. Tap Languages.
  5. Tap the download button beside each required language.
  6. Return to Settings > Apps > Translate.
  7. Turn on On-Device Mode.

Download both directions. For example, an English-to-Japanese trip may also require Japanese-to-English. Then test a new typed translation, not just a phrase already in your history. Apple’s official settings instructions contain the current path.

How to prepare Google Translate for offline use

  1. Connect to reliable Wi-Fi.
  2. Open Google Translate.
  3. Tap the language at the top of either side.
  4. Tap the download icon beside the required language.
  5. Download both the source and target languages.
  6. Turn on Airplane Mode and test the exact translation mode.

Google’s offline language instructions explain the language downloads. Its camera instructions specifically require downloading both languages for offline camera translation. If the download icon is missing, that language or feature may not support offline use.

Camera translation: which app should you choose?

Google Translate is the best general camera-translation starting point because it combines live camera text, saved photos, broad coverage, and supported offline camera use. Apple Translate is a strong alternative when its narrower language list includes your trip. Papago deserves a separate installation for its supported East Asian languages, while DeepL is worth testing when the photographed text is part of a longer written document.

Camera OCR is vulnerable to conditions that ordinary typed translation is not. Google warns that small, unclear, stylized, or low-quality text may be translated incorrectly. For better results:

  • Use clear, high-contrast printed text.
  • Avoid glare, shadows, reflections, and low light.
  • Hold the phone steady and keep the text flat in the frame.
  • Photograph a sign or menu instead of relying on moving live OCR.
  • Crop a large menu into smaller blocks.
  • Set the source language manually if automatic detection guesses incorrectly.
  • Try a second app when the result looks suspicious.
  • Keep the original photograph for reference.
  • Verify prices, numbers, addresses, names, allergens, dosage instructions, and dates yourself.

Handwriting, decorative fonts, vertical writing, curved packaging, mixed scripts, and text embedded in a complicated image are higher-risk inputs. A fluent-looking result is not proof that the OCR was correct.

Live conversations and voice translation

For a casual conversation, Apple Translate and Google Translate are the strongest general choices. Apple offers conversation mode with automatic detection, face-to-face display, playback, and an offline option for supported downloaded languages. Google offers conversations, continuous transcription, and Live Translate, but its live feature supports fewer languages than its general text mode.

iTranslate is a reasonable paid alternative when its supported offline voice languages match your needs. Its online voice feature claims more than 100 languages, but offline voice is limited to the smaller set described above. Microsoft works online for speech but does not provide current offline iOS translation.

Voice translation is most reliable when each person speaks one short sentence at a time. For better results:

  • Reduce background noise.
  • Hold the phone closer to the speaker.
  • Use manually selected languages instead of automatic detection when possible.
  • Avoid multiple people speaking at once.
  • Spell names and addresses or type them.
  • Show the translated text rather than relying only on playback.

Dialects, code-switching, long uninterrupted speech, incorrect language direction, and poor microphone placement can all produce a fluent but incorrect result.

Written translation, documents, and iPad workflows

For a long email, a document, a PDF, or writing where tone matters, start with DeepL. Its iOS app supports text, speech, camera and photos, files, transliteration, alternatives, glossary tools, tone controls where available, and DeepL Write. Its iPad handwriting feature is useful for handwritten notes or scripts that are difficult to enter with a keyboard.

The iPad’s larger screen makes several workflows more practical:

  • Review source and translated text side by side.
  • Edit and copy long translations more comfortably.

“Works on iPad” does not always mean “designed for iPad.” Before installing a niche app, check whether it is a true iPad app, an iPhone compatibility build, or an app with iPad-specific features. Waygo, for example, is iPhone-only.

Free versus paid translation apps

These apps have free core options:

  • Apple Translate
  • Google Translate
  • Microsoft Translator
  • Papago

These are free downloads with paid features, subscriptions, or usage limits:

  • DeepL: paid plans for some usage and writing features.
  • iTranslate: Pro is required for voice mode, offline mode, camera translation, and other features.
  • Reverso: Premium adds learning and usage features.
  • Speak & Translate: premium offline, camera, or unlimited-use features.
  • Translate Now: in-app purchases and subscription offerings.

Check whether the specific feature you need is paid. Calling iTranslate “free,” for example, is misleading if the reason you installed it is offline voice translation.

Before starting a free trial, open Settings > your Apple Account > Subscriptions and confirm the renewal terms. The App Store purchase sheet is the authority for the price you will actually be charged.

Privacy: offline does not mean the whole app is private

Privacy comparisons need more precision than calling one app “private.” Ask four separate questions:

  • Is this particular translation generated on the device?
  • Is speech recognition performed locally, or is audio transmitted?
  • Is an account required, and does history synchronize?
  • What does the app’s current App Store privacy label report about linked data?

Apple Translate’s On-Device Mode is the clearest mainstream option for supported downloaded language pairs. Apple also says its AirPods Live Translation models run entirely on device. However, the normal app’s online mode is a different path, and an offline-capable app may still have online features, analytics, history, or account behavior.

Google’s App Store privacy label reports several categories of data that may be linked to the user. Papago’s listing includes the specific speech-recognition caveat for certain languages described earlier. Review each app’s current privacy label and permission prompts instead of assuming that an offline button makes every part of the product private.

Before-you-leave checklist

  • Install the app while connected to Wi-Fi.
  • Download both directions of every required language pair.
  • Test a new typed translation.
  • Test camera translation using a real photo or screenshot.
  • Test voice input and translated audio playback.
  • Test conversation mode if you expect to use it.
  • Enable Apple On-Device Mode when using Apple Translate offline.
  • Turn on Airplane Mode and repeat every important test.
  • Disable Wi-Fi deliberately during the test; Airplane Mode can behave differently if Wi-Fi is manually re-enabled.
  • Save the hotel address, emergency phrases, dietary restrictions, medication names, transport phrases, and contact details.
  • Keep screenshots of essential translations in Photos.
  • Carry the original passport, ticket, prescription, label, or document beside any machine translation.
  • Do not depend on machine translation alone for legal, medical, immigration, contractual, or safety-critical text.

Troubleshooting common failures

Downloaded languages do not work offline

First confirm that both sides of the language pair are downloaded. Apple also requires On-Device Mode. Google may allow a language for typing but not for camera, speech, or conversation. A failed model download, an unsupported feature, or a cached translation in history can create the impression that offline mode works when the app is not generating anything new.

  1. Turn on Airplane Mode.
  2. Make sure Wi-Fi is not still providing internet access.
  3. Start a new translation instead of opening history.
  4. Try typed text first.
  5. Test the reverse direction.
  6. Test camera only after typed translation works.
  7. Use saved phrases or screenshots as a fallback.

The camera translated a sign incorrectly

Glare, small type, decorative fonts, curved surfaces, low light, mixed scripts, and a wrong source-language guess are common causes. Take a still photo, crop one block of text, choose the source language manually, and try another app. Never trust an unverified OCR result for an address, price, allergen, dosage, name, or safety instruction.

Voice conversation keeps mishearing people

Use short turns, speak one sentence at a time, move to a quieter location, hold the phone closer, select languages manually, and show the written result. For names, dates, numbers, and addresses, type the information rather than relying on speech recognition.

The app claims to support a language but not the feature

This is normal with headline language counts. Google’s 249, Microsoft’s 100-plus, and iTranslate’s 100-plus figures describe broad app coverage, not identical support for camera, offline, speech, conversation, documents, or regional variants. Check the exact mode and direction in the app before departure.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The translation sounds fluent but changes the meaning

Fluency is not proof of accuracy. Compare a second engine for important text, inspect the source and translation side by side, and treat back-translation only as a warning signal. Use a qualified human translator when an error could cause legal, medical, financial, immigration, or safety consequences.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can Google Translate work offline on an iPhone or iPad?

Yes, for supported languages and modes after you download the required language packs. Download both the source and target languages. Google also documents offline camera translation for supported pairs, but offline speech, conversation, and other features vary by language. Test the exact mode in Airplane Mode before relying on it.

Does DeepL work offline on iPhone or iPad?

DeepL’s official mobile documentation verifies offline access to saved favorites. It does not verify general offline generation of new translations, so DeepL should not be your only app for a trip without data service.

What is the best translation app for an iPad?

Google Translate is the best general-purpose iPad choice, Apple Translate is the simplest Apple-integrated option, and DeepL is the strongest candidate for long written documents. DeepL also supports handwriting translation on iPad. Check whether any niche app is a true iPad app rather than an iPhone-only app.

Can Microsoft Translator translate offline on iOS?

Not according to Microsoft’s current iOS FAQ and language table. Offline support is marked Android-only, and the current iOS listing also says its multi-device conversation feature has been retired.

Can I use Apple Live Translation with AirPods?

Only if you meet Apple’s listed requirements: AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation, AirPods Pro 2 or later, or AirPods Max 2; an iPhone 15 Pro or later; iOS 26 or later; Apple Intelligence enabled; the Translate app installed; and current AirPods firmware. Language and regional availability also apply.

The Bottom Line

Install Google Translate first. It is the most useful all-purpose travel backup because it combines broad coverage, camera tools, conversations, handwriting, and offline downloads. Add Apple Translate when on-device processing and iOS integration matter, DeepL for polished writing, Papago for supported Korean, Japanese, and Chinese workflows, and iTranslate Pro only when its paid offline voice features justify the subscription. Whichever app you choose, download both directions of the language pair and prove it works in Airplane Mode before you leave.
