No toy is established as a treatment for delayed speech. The most useful choices are age-appropriate toys that make it easy for you and your child to play together—such as pretend-play items, blocks, crayons, paper, and books. Follow your child’s interests and use play for shared attention and turn-taking, not as a test of whether your child can speak.

If you’re concerned about your child’s communication, discuss it with their doctor and consider an evaluation by a speech-language pathologist (SLP). Don’t wait to see whether a toy resolves a delay.

Which toys can support interaction?

Think of toys as materials for shared play, not speech-development devices. A useful toy gives you a natural way to join your child, follow their lead, imitate what they do, take turns, or talk about the activity. There is no evidence in the cited guidance that one toy category produces better speech outcomes than another.

Pretend-play toys

Dolls, toy food, toy vehicles, and stuffed animals can give you both a shared play theme. You might feed a doll, drive a vehicle, or make a stuffed animal take a turn. Let your child decide what happens; the activity does not need to follow a script. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends a range of toys, including dolls and toy vehicles, and its parent guidance encourages play, reading, and talking with young children.

Blocks and art materials

Blocks, crayons, and paper are open-ended materials that invite children to use their imagination. You can describe what your child is doing or imitate their actions without taking over. These materials work well even when there is no single “right” way to play.

Books

Sharing a book creates a chance to look at pictures and talk about what interests your child. You can pause on a picture, name something, or wait to see whether your child points, looks, gestures, makes a sound, or says a word. ASHA includes shared book reading among enrichment activities; it is an opportunity for interaction, not a treatment guarantee.

How to choose a toy

  • Look for a reason to play together. Choose something that lets you join in, imitate, take turns, or describe what is happening.
  • Favor flexible play. Blocks, art materials, and pretend-play objects can be used in different ways, so you can follow your child’s ideas.
  • Match your child’s interests and developmental level. A particular toy is not required for a child to reach a communication milestone.
  • Check safety and age guidance. Follow the toy’s age label. CDC cautions against toys with small detachable parts for very young children.
  • Don’t rely on screens or automated speech. AAP guidance notes that tablet-based toys do not provide real-life facial expressions, gestures, and vocalizations.

How to play without turning it into a test

  1. Let your child choose or lead. Offer a toy or activity, then notice what your child does with it.
  2. Join by imitating and describing. Copy an action or describe it in short, natural language. CDC recommends child-led strategies such as imitation and description.
  3. Pause and give your child time. A response may be a look, gesture, sound, sign, or word. Communication is broader than spoken words.
  4. Share books and attend to the pictures. Talk about what your child notices; CDC includes pointing to items in a book when asked among its age-two milestones.
  5. Keep play optional and enjoyable. Toys can support everyday interaction, but they do not replace an assessment or individualized therapy.

What age-two milestones can—and can’t—tell you

CDC’s age-two milestone checklist includes pointing to things in a book when asked, saying at least two words together, pointing to at least two body parts when asked, and using gestures beyond waving and pointing. CDC defines milestones as things most children (75% or more) can do by a certain age. The checklist helps families monitor development; it is not a substitute for validated developmental screening or an individual evaluation.

ASHA describes a commonly used criterion for late language emergence at 24 months as fewer than 50 expressive words and no two-word combinations. That criterion should not be used by itself to diagnose a child. An SLP’s evaluation may also consider language comprehension, gestures, social communication, symbolic play, and developmental trajectory—not just vocabulary.

These are population estimates based on earlier studies; they do not predict an individual child’s development.

When to talk with a professional

If you think your child’s communication may be delayed, tell their doctor. Ask whether a developmental screening or evaluation is appropriate, and consider consulting an SLP. A child’s communication can be assessed across understanding, gestures, social interaction, play, and spoken language. Some children benefit from help from a trained speech-language professional; a toy cannot determine whether that support is needed.
