There is no single best toy for an autistic toddler, and a toy does not need to teach a specific skill to be worthwhile. The best choices are safe, accessible, and interesting to that child—options for enjoyable solo play or warm, shared play with a caregiver. Think of toys as invitations to explore, communicate, imagine, or move, not as treatments or guaranteed ways to accelerate development.
How to choose toys for an autistic toddler
Start with the child, not a claim on the box. Notice what they enjoy, how they explore objects, and what feels comfortable or overwhelming. A familiar interest can be a useful starting point; there is no need to redirect a child’s play simply because it looks different from another toddler’s.
- Interest: Choose objects the child wants to handle, look at, hear, or return to.
- Developmental fit: Look for play the toddler can access and enjoy now. Age labels and developmental abilities are not interchangeable; the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends considering a child’s developmental level when selecting toys, including for children with delays or disabilities.
- Sensory comfort: Consider sound, light, texture, movement, and predictability. A feature that delights one child may bother another. Sensory toys are an option, not a requirement for autistic children.
- Access: Consider whether the child can see, reach, grip, manipulate, or activate the toy. If a feature is difficult to use, a therapist may suggest an adaptation such as an easier-to-grip handle or easier activation.
- Shared play: Ask whether a caregiver can comfortably join in, while leaving room for the child to play independently and lead.
- Safety: Check for small parts and choking hazards, follow age and supervision guidance, and consider whether the toy is safe for the way this toddler uses objects.
The AAP’s guidance is about selecting toys for young children broadly, including children with special needs; it does not identify a product proven best for autistic toddlers. For ideas tailored to a child’s abilities and access needs, ask their pediatrician or therapist.
Toy ideas by kind of play
These are starting points, not prescriptions or a ranking. A simple toy may invite more varied play than an electronic one, and no category guarantees a developmental outcome.

| Play opportunity | Examples | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Building and problem-solving | Blocks, simple puzzles | Choose pieces the toddler can handle safely. Let them stack, sort, fit, or explore in their own way; there is no need to insist on one correct result. |
| Pretend and imaginative play | Dolls, toy animals, everyday play objects | Offer familiar objects and follow the child’s interest. Pretend play can be shared, but it need not look or sound a particular way. |
| Books and creative activity | Picture books, crayons and paper | Reading can mean looking, pointing, turning pages, or listening together. Check that art materials are suitable for the toddler’s age and use them with appropriate supervision. |
| Movement | Balls, push-pull toys | Consider the space, the child’s mobility, and whether the toy can be used safely with the level of supervision needed. |
The AAP describes blocks and puzzles as examples of toys for hands-on problem-solving, and books, pretend-play objects, art, and movement as different ways young children can play and explore. CDC child-led-play guidance also gives blocks, crayons, and paper as creative-play examples. These examples do not mean every toddler will enjoy every activity.
Make play child-led and enjoyable
A caregiver’s attention and responsiveness can matter more than buying a costly or electronic toy. Alan L. Mendelsohn, M.D., FAAP, an early-childhood expert, told AAP News on December 3, 2018: “The goal is to have high quality, bonding, warm time together as they play, rather than looking for the toy to advance the child’s development in some way.”

In practice, offer a toy, notice what interests the child, and join in without taking over. CDC guidance on child-led play recommends age-appropriate, safe toys and describes creative play with items such as blocks, crayons, and paper. A child may engage through watching, repeating an action, exploring a texture, or inviting an adult in; play does not have to become a lesson to count as worthwhile.

Play can create opportunities for connection, exploration, communication, movement, creativity, and problem-solving. The AAP’s report on the power of play discusses developmental opportunities in play with caregivers. Its report on selecting appropriate toys for young children in the digital era addresses fit, caregiver involvement, play, and safety. Both reports were reaffirmed in January 2025.
