For a brighter outdoor model, consider the Olight Seeker 4 Pro; for a budget torch, the Halfords 9 LED aluminium torch; and for a pocket backup, the Maglite Solitaire LED mini flashlight.
Those recommendations serve different needs. Choose by beam control, runtime, charging, durability and how you will carry or mount the light—not by maximum lumens alone. “Best” labels and review scores are editorial judgments; figures such as lumen output and beam distance are product specifications reported by the named sources.

For a general-purpose torch: Lifesavers Intensity 545
The Independent’s January 2026 guide names the Intensity 545 its best overall handheld torch. Its reported 545 lumens and USB power make it a practical candidate for household use, walking and keeping on hand for a power cut. The guide reports up to 16 hours, but does not establish that runtime at maximum brightness; treat it as a mode-dependent upper figure rather than a promise of continuous full-output use. The review’s stated drawback is price.

For a brighter outdoor torch: Olight Seeker 4 Pro

For a lower-cost basic option: Halfords 9 LED aluminium torch
The Independent named this its budget buy in January 2026. That verdict identifies it as a value-oriented choice, but the guide information available here does not state its lumen output, runtime, beam distance or water rating. If those details matter for outdoor or emergency use, verify them with the retailer before purchase rather than comparing it with higher-output models on assumptions.

That makes its format and replaceable cell more relevant than competing for maximum brightness. It is a compact backup, not a substitute for a high-output outdoor torch.

For inspection and everyday carry: Nebo Inspector 500+
Testix rated the Inspector 500+ 9.2/10 in its August 2026 comparison, reporting 500 lumens, a 142 m beam, 62.4 g weight, USB-C charging, IP67 protection and a £28 price. It is a strong compact inspection candidate if you want more output and water-and-dust protection than a basic mini torch. Testix’s comparison considers brightness and beam, battery and charging, durability, portability and comfort.
For a Milwaukee tool setup: choose by task and battery ecosystem
Milwaukee Tool UK’s catalogue lists several flashlight formats: an FL2000(2) USB rechargeable flashlight at 2,000 lumens, a TMLED(6) twist-focus flashlight at 1,100 lumens, an 800-lumen fixed flashlight and a 250-lumen rechargeable pen light. The FL2000(2) is reported to reach 200 m and uses a REDLITHIUM USB battery, charged by USB-C or an AC adapter. Milwaukee reports that its pen light reaches up to 100 m, has two modes and uses a low-battery safety blink. These are most compelling when you already use Milwaukee’s battery ecosystem; the catalogue details cited here do not establish comparative runtime for the models.
How to compare torches without being misled by lumens
Brightness and beam shape
Lumens measure light output, but do not alone describe how useful the beam is. Beam distance indicates how far a light is reported to reach, while beam focus and brightness control affect close-up tasks. A high-output torch can be uncomfortable at close range; a lower mode or adjustable beam is valuable for reading a map, fixing a fuse or looking inside a bag.

Runtime and charging
Check which brightness mode a runtime figure describes. Maximum or turbo output commonly has a shorter runtime than low modes; the Seeker 4 Pro’s stated 15 days is explicitly for moon mode. Also check whether the light charges over USB-C, uses another USB arrangement, relies on a charging holster, or takes replaceable cells. Replaceable batteries can be useful for a torch stored long-term, while rechargeable models avoid routine disposable-cell replacement.
Durability and weather protection
IP ratings are useful for comparing protection against water and dust, but they are not interchangeable with impact or drop ratings. The Seeker 4 Pro is reported as IPX8 and the MAG-TAC as IPX4 by T3; the Nebo Inspector 500+ is reported as IP67 by Testix. Compare the stated rating with the conditions you expect, and look for a separate drop-resistance claim if impacts are a concern.

Portability, controls and mounting
Weight, grip, clips, magnetic attachment and switch design can matter more than peak output when carrying a torch daily or using it with gloves. A pen torch fits inspection and pocket carry; a head torch keeps both hands free; a handheld model offers more general-purpose flexibility. The Seeker’s magnetic rotary dimmer and charging holster are distinctive handling features, while the compact weights reported for the Nebo, Ledlenser and Maglite help distinguish inspection lights from larger handhelds.

These are comparison figures reported by Testix, not a guarantee that every current retail version is identical. The lightest model is not automatically the best for inspection: the Nebo’s higher reported output, USB-C charging and IP67 rating come with greater weight than the two smaller alternatives.
Choosing for a power cut, camping or a glove box
- Power cuts at home: favour accessible controls, a useful low mode and a charging or battery setup you can maintain. Keep the torch somewhere easy to find, and check its charge or cells periodically.
- Camping and outdoor use: decide whether you need a handheld beam, hands-free head torch or both. Water protection and controllable output matter; a high peak-lumen figure does not tell you how long the torch will sustain that output.
- Glove-box backup: a small torch such as the Maglite Solitaire is easier to store, and its replaceable AAA cell avoids depending on an onboard charge. Check the battery periodically, especially if the torch is kept in a vehicle.
- Maintenance and trade work: a pen light can reach into narrow spaces, while a Milwaukee model may make sense if you already own compatible batteries. Choose a head torch or magnetic option when keeping both hands free is important.
What the specifications do—and do not—tell you
The models above are not a single like-for-like test set. The Independent and T3 provide dated editorial recommendations, while Testix supplies a scored comparison of compact lights and Milwaukee’s UK catalogue lists manufacturer specifications. A “best” label reflects the named publication’s judgment; lumen, beam-distance, runtime and IP figures are reported specifications, not independent guarantees of performance in every condition.
