For a fast gender-and-dialogue check, start with Bechdel Test Scripts. It accepts a screenplay excerpt or full script, parses standard formatting, identifies named female characters and their speaking lines, and checks whether at least two named women talk to each other about something other than a man. Use Plotmuse Script Analytics when you need percentages, scene-by-scene presence, character audits, and broader demographic measures. Use StudioBinder or Film Logic for production breakdowns rather than inclusion analysis. Technical users can inspect BechdelScript or ScripThreads when they need open analysis components, visualizations, or line-level auditability.
No tool can determine whether a screenplay represents gender well by itself. Automated parsing can miss aliases, unnamed characters, revised names, dialect, intentionally fluid identities, and context. Treat the output as a structured first pass, then read the flagged scenes.

The practical choice is usually a sequence rather than a single product: run Bechdel Test Scripts for a quick baseline, use Plotmuse for distributions and broader metrics, manually inspect the relevant scenes, then move production facts into StudioBinder or Film Logic if the draft is entering scheduling and casting.
What “dialogue tracking” can mean
Screenplay software does not use one universal definition of dialogue. Before comparing a result, identify the unit being counted. A character can have many short lines but fewer words than a character with a handful of long speeches. A scene-presence metric can show that a character appears, without proving that the character speaks. Speaking time in a finished movie is different again because delivery speed, pauses, overlapping speech, and editing affect duration.

Lines
A line count treats each dialogue block or speaking turn as one unit. It is useful for spotting who receives frequent opportunities to speak, but it can overstate a character who delivers many brief replies.
Words
Word counts measure the amount of written dialogue more directly than turn counts. They still do not equal filmed speaking time: a fast monologue and a slow, interrupted exchange can contain the same number of words but occupy different durations.
Scenes and presence
Scene-level presence records whether a character appears in a scene. Plotmuse describes scene-by-scene screen-time presence, which is valuable for seeing who shares narrative space. Presence should not be reported as minutes of screen time unless a tool actually measures a finished video.

Speaking time
Speaking-time measurement belongs primarily to audiovisual analysis. The Geena Davis Institute’s 2015 description of GD-IQ says it divided movies into shots, detected the person on camera, and used automatic speech detection to classify the speaker as female or male. That is a filmed-content measurement, not a screenplay parser, so it should not be substituted for script dialogue counts.

How the main script tools work
Bechdel Test Scripts: the quickest inclusion baseline
Bechdel Test Scripts is the clearest starting point when the question is, “Does this draft contain a basic independent interaction between women?” Its documented character extraction identifies named female characters, their speaking lines, and whom they interact with across scenes. The test passes only when at least two named women speak to each other about something other than a man.
That rule is deliberately narrow. A passing result does not show that women have equal dialogue, important arcs, diverse identities, or meaningful agency. A failing result can arise in a short excerpt, a story intentionally centered on one person, or a draft whose women speak together but whose conversation is classified as being about a man. Use the scene list to examine the context rather than treating the badge as a quality score.
Plotmuse Script Analytics: the broadest quantitative match
Plotmuse is the closest direct match for writers asking how dialogue is distributed. Its guide describes a percentage of lines belonging to each character, scene-by-scene presence, character-profile audits, Bechdel-Wallace testing, and gender or demographic balance metrics. Those views let you ask several different questions: Who speaks most? Who appears most often? Which scenes contain only one gender category? Do the same characters dominate both dialogue and presence?

StudioBinder: dialogue information for production breakdown
StudioBinder’s documented behavior is operational: when characters have dialogue in a scene, it automatically assigns cast IDs. That can help a production team connect speaking roles to breakdowns and scheduling. It is useful after you have decided which characters matter for production, but its described feature is not a representation audit and should not be presented as one.
Film Logic: structured imports and production reports
Film Logic imports FDX, PDF, or FLS scripts and carries scene headings, characters, and locations into breakdown reports, boards, and call sheets. Choose it when the immediate need is to preserve script structure for planning. The reviewed material does not document a gender classifier, dialogue-share report, or Bechdel-style rule in Film Logic.
BechdelScript: an extensible open-source route
BechdelScript separates gender, script-parsing, and topic-modeling components. Its documented labels include Woman, Man, and Non-Binary, making the label set more explicit than a binary-only report. An engineer can inspect the parsing and topic logic, adapt it, or audit how a result was produced. The trade-off is setup and maintenance: an open project is not the same as a turnkey hosted service, and you remain responsible for validating names, aliases, and classifications.
ScripThreads: visualization with an audit trail
ScripThreads is a research-oriented visualization and analysis tool documented in Digital Humanities Quarterly. Its important advantage is direct access to every screenplay line alongside the visualization. That makes it easier to move from a pattern—such as one character dominating a network or dialogue chart—to the exact text that produced it. The same publication discusses the limits of automated screenplay analysis, so its charts should support close reading rather than replace it.

A reliable workflow for one screenplay
- Prepare a clean draft. Use the version you actually want to evaluate. Keep character names consistent, preserve standard screenplay formatting, and make a note of aliases, nicknames, unnamed roles, and characters whose gender is intentionally unspecified.
- Run Bechdel Test Scripts first. Paste an excerpt or submit the full script using the tool’s current input control. Record the overall result and the scenes, named women, lines, and interactions it identifies. Do not edit the script to force a pass before reading the flagged exchanges.
- Inspect every flagged scene. Confirm that the characters are genuinely speaking to one another, that they are named, and that the subject is not merely classified incorrectly. Check whether an unnamed but important character, an alias, or a scene-heading variation caused a false negative.
- Use Plotmuse for distribution. Review each character’s percentage of lines, scene presence, character-profile information, Bechdel-Wallace result, and available gender or demographic metrics. Save the scene or character references associated with any striking imbalance.
- Separate measurement types. Put line share, word share, scene presence, and any speaking-time estimate in different columns or notes. Never label a line percentage as screen-time percentage unless the underlying measurement is actually filmed video.
- Read the scenes behind the numbers. Look for who initiates decisions, whose goals move the plot, who receives reactions rather than actions, and whether a high line count consists mainly of exposition or interruptions. A numerical balance can coexist with unequal narrative agency.
- Resolve identity and parsing exceptions manually. Merge aliases only when they refer to the same person. Separate similarly named characters. Review non-binary, unnamed, transformed, or intentionally fluid characters instead of forcing them into a binary category.
- Hand off production data only when needed. If the project is moving into scheduling, use StudioBinder’s cast-ID behavior or import the script into Film Logic so scene headings, characters, and locations feed breakdown reports, boards, and call sheets. Keep the inclusion analysis as a separate editorial record.
- Save an audit note. Record the draft version, date, tool, input format, settings, and manual corrections. This allows a later draft comparison without pretending that the result is an independently validated measurement.
How to interpret gender results responsibly
Binary labels are not a complete account of identity
A report that divides characters into female and male categories can answer a narrow distribution question, but it cannot represent every gender identity or uncertainty in the text. BechdelScript’s documented Woman, Man, and Non-Binary labels are a useful example of a broader label set, yet even three labels cannot resolve every fictional or intentionally ambiguous case. Preserve an “uncertain or needs review” category in your own audit rather than guessing.
Named-character rules exclude some meaningful interactions
The Bechdel rule requires named women. An unnamed woman can have substantial dialogue or agency and still be excluded from the pass condition. Conversely, two named women can pass during a trivial exchange while the rest of the script marginalizes them. Report the rule result alongside the scene evidence and your close-reading observations.
Topic classification needs context
Automated topic models can misunderstand pronouns, sarcasm, quoted speech, or a conversation in which a man is mentioned only to reject his control. Read the full exchange, preceding action, and following beat before deciding what a scene means.

Accuracy, privacy, and evidence limits
The available descriptions are feature documentation, not independent accuracy studies. Do not turn a feature statement into a benchmark, and do not claim that one tool is more accurate unless a published test supports that comparison. The USC SAIL Lab reported in 2017 that it analyzed 7,000 characters and more than 53,000 dialogues in nearly 1,000 film scripts, measuring gender, race, age, language tone, and relationships. That figure describes the scale of a research corpus, not the accuracy of any commercial parser.

The Geena Davis Institute’s 2015 GD-IQ description demonstrates that automated shot, on-screen-person, and speech detection can measure filmed gender and speaking time. It does not validate screenplay parsing or establish that a script tool can infer a performer’s identity from text.
Current prices, plan limits, retention periods, processing locations, export formats, and privacy terms were not established in the reviewed material. Before uploading an unreleased screenplay, check the current service policy for storage, deletion, access by staff or contractors, and whether submitted text is used for model training. If those terms are unsuitable, prefer a local or inspectable workflow and keep the manuscript offline.

Early draft or rewrite
Choose Bechdel Test Scripts for a quick baseline, then inspect the scenes it flags. This is the lowest-friction way to find whether a basic independent interaction exists before spending time on a full quantitative audit.

Development notes and representation review
Add Plotmuse to quantify line distribution and scene presence. Pair its charts with a written review of agency, goals, interruptions, and narrative consequences. Use BechdelScript when your team needs explicit non-binary labels or wants to inspect and modify the analysis components.
Academic or data-driven study
ScripThreads is suited to visualization that remains traceable to individual lines. Document your coding decisions, identity assumptions, draft versions, and exclusions so another reader can reproduce the interpretation.
Pre-production
Move the structured script into StudioBinder or Film Logic when the objective is cast, location, breakdown, board, or call-sheet preparation. Those production records answer operational questions; they should not be mistaken for a gender-representation assessment.
Common failure modes and fixes
- Alias splitting: The same character appears under a full name, nickname, or abbreviated cue. Normalize the name in your notes and verify every scene before comparing totals.
- Unnamed roles disappearing: Background or functional characters may be excluded from named-character tests. Record them separately and explain the exclusion.
- PDF parsing errors: Broken columns, scanned pages, or nonstandard formatting can scramble character cues and dialogue. Use a clean text-based export or a supported FDX/FLS file where available, then spot-check early, middle, and late scenes.
- Dialogue confused with action: Parentheticals, voice-over, off-screen cues, and quoted text may be counted differently. Inspect the tool’s extracted lines before drawing conclusions.
- False certainty about gender: Names and pronouns are imperfect signals. Mark uncertain cases for human review and do not infer an actor’s gender from a character label.
- Pass treated as proof of equality: Keep the Bechdel result next to line share, scene presence, and close-reading notes. No single score describes representation.
- Production data mistaken for editorial analysis: A cast ID or call-sheet entry proves that a role needs production tracking, not that the role has balanced or independent representation.
Bottom line
Start with Bechdel Test Scripts for a fast, scene-specific baseline. Add Plotmuse when you need character-by-character dialogue shares, presence patterns, and broader balance metrics. Use BechdelScript or ScripThreads for inspectable, research-oriented work, and reserve StudioBinder or Film Logic for the production handoff. In every case, verify aliases and ambiguous identities, read the scenes behind the numbers, and describe exactly what was counted.
