The best toilet gasket is the one that matches your toilet’s waste opening and the height and condition of its floor flange. For many installations, a traditional wax ring is a straightforward choice; a wax-free rubber or foam seal can suit specific handling or surface needs. No cited head-to-head test establishes one material or brand as best for every toilet.

What a toilet gasket does

The gasket seals the joint between the toilet outlet and the floor flange, helping prevent wastewater leaks and sewer gases from escaping. Wax and wax-free materials compress during installation to fill the connection. Oatey describes these functions in its manufacturer overview of wax and non-wax toilet seals.

How to choose the right toilet gasket

Match the opening size

Measure or identify the toilet’s waste opening, then choose a seal designed for it. Oatey says wax rings are available in 3-inch and 4-inch diameters and advises matching the ring to the opening at the bottom of the toilet. Those are product-sizing options, not a claim that every toilet uses only those sizes; verify the specific toilet and seal instructions. See Oatey’s wax-ring selection guidance.

Match thickness to flange height

A regular wax ring is generally suited to a flange sitting on top of the finished floor. If the flange is lower—for example, set on the subfloor and flush with tile—a thicker ring may help bridge the height difference. A polyethylene sleeve can extend the discharge opening and help with alignment. The right choice depends on the actual flange and product design; do not assume extra thickness will solve a damaged or incorrectly positioned flange.

Decide whether a horn or sleeve is appropriate

A horn is a funnel-shaped polyethylene sleeve that directs flow into the waste opening. Oatey says it may be especially useful when the flange is recessed, while standard rings can suit many cases where the flange is level with or above the floor. Confirm that the horn fits the toilet and flange arrangement; it is not automatically better for every installation. Oatey explains the distinction in its toilet gaskets and bolts FAQ.

Check the flange before buying a replacement seal

Once the toilet is removed, inspect the flange and its bolt slots. A cracked flange or damaged slots may need a compatible repair ring; a flange left too low by new flooring may need an appropriate extender or other repair. A new gasket alone does not fix structural flange damage. Oatey outlines these repair cases in its guide to replacing, repairing, and reattaching a toilet.

Wax, rubber, or foam: which is best?

Oatey’s material comparison is manufacturer guidance, not an independent comparative test. Use it as a starting point, then check the seal’s own compatibility and installation instructions.

Seal type Potential advantages Trade-offs and checks
Wax Long-used option that conforms to the toilet and flange; Oatey characterizes it as lower cost. Once compressed, it cannot be reused if the toilet must be lifted or repositioned. Choose the correct size and thickness for the opening and flange height.
Rubber, wax-free Oatey says rubber seals are easier to handle and reposition. Oatey says they generally cost more, and some non-wax products may be sensitive to cleaning chemicals. The manufacturer notes that long-term durability is less documented than for wax rings; verify product-specific chemical compatibility.
Foam, wax-free Oatey describes foam seals as adaptable to uneven surfaces. They can cost more and may be less reusable than rubber seals. Check the product instructions and the condition of the mounting surface.

For a simple replacement on a sound flange, a correctly sized wax ring is a common, practical choice. If you expect to need repositioning during setup, a compatible wax-free seal may be easier to work with. Neither is a universal winner: prioritize fit, flange height, flange condition, and the specific product instructions.

Signs the toilet seal may have failed

Possible clues include water pooling at the toilet base, a persistent sewer odor, visible floor damage, a rocking or loose toilet, or water stains on the ceiling below. These signs do not prove the gasket is the cause. A rocking toilet, for example, also calls for checking whether the bowl is stable and the floor is level.

After removing the toilet, inspect the flange for cracks or damaged bolt slots. If water has reached a lower floor or subfloor and visible flange damage does not explain the leak, Oatey recommends professional diagnosis of internal piping. Its toilet gasket FAQ describes these symptoms as possible signs, not a definitive diagnosis.

How to install a toilet gasket without disturbing the seal

  1. Shut off and drain the toilet. Turn off the water, flush and remove remaining water as appropriate, disconnect the supply line, then remove the toilet. Scrape away the old wax and inspect the flange before fitting a replacement.
  2. Dry-fit the toilet. Check that the bolt holes align and that the bowl sits level without rocking. Shim the toilet if needed before installing the new seal.
  3. Place the new gasket as its instructions specify. Center it for the toilet-and-flange configuration, then lower the bowl level onto it. For wax, use a small twisting motion to compress the ring; rocking can disturb the seal. Oatey’s 2020 Wax Ring Instruction Guide says: “Set the toilet down with a small twist but no rocking.”
  4. Secure the bowl carefully. Replace the T-bolts when replacing a wax seal, as Oatey advises. Tighten the nuts evenly and cautiously; overtightening can crack the bowl. Fluidmaster gives similar careful-tightening guidance for its specific 7511 reinforced wax ring kit; follow the instructions supplied with whichever seal you use.
  5. Reconnect and test. Reconnect the water supply, refill the tank, and flush while checking around the toilet base. Check below as well if accessible. Apply caulk only after confirming the connection is watertight, and follow local practice and applicable product instructions.

When to replace the seal—and when to repair something else

A gasket should be replaced when the toilet is removed, because a compressed wax ring cannot reliably be reused after repositioning. If a toilet has leaked or developed odor, inspect the seal and flange rather than assuming a new ring alone will fix the problem. A low flange, cracked flange, damaged bolt slots, or unexplained leakage into a lower floor may require a repair or professional diagnosis instead of—or in addition to—a replacement gasket.
