Start with Dead Space Remake if you want the closest broad gameplay match to Resident Evil. It pairs deliberate third-person combat with scarce ammunition and a hostile, enclosed setting. For different parts of the Resident Evil experience, try Signalis for retro puzzles, Alan Wake 2 for psychological storytelling, or Days Gone for open-world zombie action.

Which game is the closest follow-up to Resident Evil?

Dead Space Remake: the closest broad gameplay match

Dead Space Remake is the strongest starting point if you want another third-person survival-horror game built around managing danger and ammunition. Its setting—a derelict mining ship—keeps the action in threatening, enclosed spaces, while combat centers on dismembering enemies rather than simply shooting them down. That makes it a good fit for fans of Resident Evil 4’s deliberate aiming and action, though the sci-fi world is a clear departure from a zombie outbreak. GamesRadar also recommends it directly to Resident Evil fans.

The 2023 remake is listed for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S in GameSpot’s guide. Check the current store listing for the edition and platform you want before buying.

Which game fits the part of Resident Evil you liked most?

Signalis: puzzles, exploration, and retro horror

Choose Signalis if you miss deliberate exploration and puzzle-solving more than modern action. GameSpot describes its measured pacing, puzzle design, psychological story, pixel-art presentation, and science-fiction setting. A Steam Survival Horror curator also points to Resident Evil and Silent Hill as influences; that comparison is the curator’s view, not a formal classification. Its retro look and cerebral tone are central to the appeal, so it is not the best choice if you want a realistic, contemporary presentation.

I Hate This Place - Nintendo Switch
  • Classic Craft-Based Survival Horror - Scavenge every corner of Rutherford Ranch to stay alive. From haunted forests, a derelict town, to infested bunkers. Sometimes your best hope is to find shelter and hunker down till morning.
  • Deadly Silence Goes A Long Way - Stealth and combat go hand-in-hand here as many of the twisted creatures in Rutherford Ranch hunt and stalk you by sound alone. Brute force will often just land you in an early grave. Use sound to your advantage, luring creatures away from your path or cleverly leading them straight into deadly traps you laid.
  • 80’s Vibes Meets Comic Book Flair - Inspired by the award-nominated comic book series created by Kyle Starks and Artyom Topilin, I Hate This Place comes to life with bold colors, a punchy retro comic book style, and a heavy dose of '80s flair. Alan Wake 2: supernatural mystery and psychological horror

Alan Wake 2 is the story-led option. It combines limited resources with a supernatural mystery and two protagonists, leaning more toward psychological and surreal horror than creature-driven action. GameSpot lists it for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. Pick it for atmosphere and narrative rather than as a direct substitute for Resident Evil’s combat rhythm.

Days Gone: zombie hordes and open-world action

GamesRadar’s recommendations for games like Resident Evil include Days Gone for players drawn to shooting, hordes, missions, crafting, and progression. It is the choice here for a larger world and more action-oriented zombie fighting, not for a compact, tightly paced survival-horror experience. That open-world scale makes it a looser match than Dead Space Remake.

At a glance: how the recommendations differ

Game Best for What carries over What changes
Dead Space Remake Closest broad gameplay match Third-person survival horror, scarce ammunition, hostile enclosed spaces Science-fiction setting and dismemberment-focused combat
Signalis Retro puzzles and deliberate exploration Survival-horror pacing and puzzle-led play Pixel-art sci-fi presentation and psychological storytelling
Alan Wake 2 Story-first psychological horror Limited resources and supernatural danger Two-protagonist mystery and a more surreal narrative emphasis
Days Gone Open-world zombie action Undead threats, shooting, and crafting Broader world and stronger action focus

These are different kinds of fit rather than interchangeable alternatives. Compare them by combat perspective and pace, how tightly resources are limited, the role of puzzles and exploration, whether the horror is psychological or creature-driven, the setting, and platform support.

How to choose based on your preferred Resident Evil experience

  • You liked Resident Evil 4’s action and aiming: start with Dead Space Remake. Consider Days Gone if you want that action spread across a much larger world.
  • You want older-style puzzles and careful exploration: try Signalis, keeping in mind its pixel art and science-fiction story.
  • You want a story-led, unsettling mystery: choose Alan Wake 2 for supernatural, psychological horror rather than a close combat match.
  • You want first-person horror: within the Resident Evil series, PlayStation describes Resident Evil 7 as using the first-person “Isolated View.” It is a franchise option, not a game outside Resident Evil.
