The best surge protector for your setup is one that is genuinely listed as a surge protector, suits the electrical load, and fits the plugs and devices you need to connect. Tom’s Guide’s February 24, 2026 roundup names six models with reported specifications; TechGearLab lists four more candidates, but the available information does not support ranking all ten against one another. The options below are therefore a sourced shortlist, not a head-to-head test by itechguides.com.
Surge protector vs. power strip: what is the difference?
A basic power strip adds outlets; a surge protector adds circuitry intended to limit voltage spikes. UL Solutions puts it plainly: “The difference is the power strip is just an extension cord with a lot of outlets.” Products may look alike, so check the exact product’s markings and specifications rather than assuming that every multi-outlet strip provides surge protection. UL Solutions’ guide to power strips and surge protectors explains the distinction.
Ten surge protector candidates, grouped by likely use
The six models below are described in Tom’s Guide’s roundup, updated February 24, 2026. Its specifications and judgments are that publication’s reporting, not independent tests by itechguides.com. Model names and specifications can change; confirm the exact current product, safety listing, and manufacturer documentation before buying. Four additional names appear in TechGearLab’s comparison, but detailed specifications and test results are not established in the available listing.
| Model | Potential fit | Reported details and caveats |
|---|---|---|
| Anker 351 Power Strip | Desk or entertainment setup needing many connections | Tom’s Guide calls it its overall pick and reports 12 AC outlets, three USB ports, 2,100 joules, and a 5-foot cord. It notes evenly spaced outlets may constrain bulky plugs. |
| One Beat 6-Outlet Surge Protector | Compact, lower-cost setup | Tom’s Guide reports six outlets, three USB ports, 900 joules, and a 5-foot cord. It flags warranty information as difficult to find. |
| Monoprice 12 Outlet Power Surge Protector | Many outlets and a high published joule figure | Tom’s Guide reports 12 outlets, two USB ports, 4,320 joules, and a 6-foot cord. It notes limited warranty terms and no equipment-protection coverage. |
| CyberPower Desktop Power Charger | Desk setup with phone charging | Tom’s Guide reports two outlets, two USB ports, 1,500 joules, a 5-foot cord, and 10W Qi charging. |
| ECHOGEAR ShockBlocker 8 | Home theater or entertainment center | Tom’s Guide reports eight outlets, 3,420 joules, a 6-foot cord, noise filtering, indicator lights, and a five-year warranty. Check the terms for the exact model and listing. |
| Tessan Flat Plug Surge Protector | Small space or travel use | Tom’s Guide reports four outlets, three USB ports, 900 joules, and a 5-foot cord. It notes less protection than larger models and no equipment-protection coverage. |
| Bototek Surge Protector 10 AC Outlets | Multi-outlet alternative | TechGearLab names it in its comparison; detailed specifications and strengths are not stated in the available listing. |
| Belkin 12-Outlet Pivot-Plug | Pivoting-outlet layout candidate | TechGearLab names it in its comparison; detailed specifications and strengths are not stated in the available listing. |
| CRST 10-Outlet Heavy Duty | Higher-capacity layout candidate | TechGearLab names it in its comparison; detailed specifications and strengths are not stated in the available listing. |
| Tripp Lite 8-Outlet | Multi-outlet alternative | TechGearLab names it in its comparison; detailed specifications and strengths are not stated in the available listing. |
The first six models’ reported figures and review notes come from Tom’s Guide’s surge protector roundup. The last four names are confirmed in TechGearLab’s comparison listing; the available listing does not establish their scores, detailed specifications, or testing date. These sources do not establish one common ranking across all ten.

How to choose a surge protector for your electronics
1. Confirm the safety listing and exact model
Look for a recognized safety certification on the product itself and verify the exact model, not just the brand. Safe Electricity advises checking for the UL 1449 label and cautions that phrases such as “UL tested” or “meets UL” do not establish that a product is listed. UL likewise recommends buying a certified product. See Safe Electricity’s guidance on surge protectors.
2. Match the electrical rating to the load
Check the strip’s marked amp or watt rating and follow its manufacturer’s instructions. More outlets do not mean the strip can safely supply more power. UL warns that high-draw heating appliances can overload strips and advises keeping to one such appliance per strip. Do not plug a space heater, crockpot, toaster, or similar heating appliance into a strip unless that exact product’s instructions explicitly allow it. If a breaker trips frequently or the home lacks adequate outlets, UL recommends consulting a qualified electrician rather than solving the problem with additional strips. UL’s safety guidance covers load and outlet use.

3. Read joule and surge-current figures in context
Joules are a simplified measure of how much surge energy a protector can dissipate; clamping voltage describes voltage limiting, and maximum surge current describes surge-current handling. These figures describe different aspects of performance. The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) cautions that a joule total may combine multiple wiring modes and says maximum surge current may offer better information. Do not treat a particular joule rating as a universal guarantee or assume that the highest number alone makes a protector best. NIST’s selection and application guide also describes typical product joule ratings as ranging from about 100 joules to 1,000 joules or more; that range is descriptive context from a guide listed as published in 2022, not a current-market survey or buying threshold.
4. Prioritize fit and usable connections
For a surge protector with USB ports, check the number and type of ports against the devices you actually charge. For a compact surge protector, consider whether a flat plug or short body fits the outlet location, and whether the design blocks neighboring outlets. For a home theater, compare outlet spacing for adapters, cord length, and whether the strip can sit where its indicators remain visible. Outlet count alone is not a measure of safe load.

5. Understand indicators and failure behavior
Read the manual to learn what the grounding and protection lights mean; NIST notes that indicator meanings may not be self-evident. Safe Electricity identifies a failed status light, alarm, or automatic shutoff as a cue to replace the protector. Do not assume a light means the same thing across models.
6. Treat warranty and connected-equipment coverage as secondary
Compare the manufacturer warranty and any connected-equipment coverage only after checking safety listing, ratings, fit, and use. Read the exact terms and exclusions; a large stated coverage limit alone does not prove that a connected device will be covered or that the protector will prevent damage.

Use and replace a surge protector safely
- Do not exceed the strip’s marked electrical rating, even if it has unused outlets.
- Keep cords out from under rugs and stop using any damaged or frayed strip or cord. UL says damaged equipment should be replaced.
- There is no universal mandatory replacement interval. UL says strips do not expire or need replacement after a specified period; follow the model’s instructions and replace it if damaged or if its protection-failure indicator, alarm, or automatic shutoff signals failure.
- Consider surge paths beyond the power cord. Surges can enter through telephone or cable circuits, and equipment connected to multiple systems may have more than one path. Safe Electricity recommends protecting relevant communication lines near the equipment; consult the product instructions for supported connections.
- For persistent breaker trips, insufficient outlets, or questions about panel protection or complex installation, contact a qualified electrician.
UL’s broader page about extension cords and UL 817 describes extension-cord characteristics; it does not certify any of the named surge protector models. See the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission’s extension-cord guidance for that separate topic.
