For most students shopping under ₹40,000 in India, the Acer Aspire Lite AL15-41 (UN.31ZSI.023) is the strongest on-paper Windows choice: its listed configuration pairs a Ryzen 5 5625U with 16 GB RAM and a 512 GB SSD. 91mobiles listed it at ₹35,999 on October 7, 2026; prices and stock can change, so confirm the exact SKU and checkout price before buying.
Best laptop for students under ₹40,000: the leading options
These options are based on published specifications, listings and one attributed review—not a direct comparison or hands-on test of every model. The price snapshots below are from India and are time-sensitive.

Why the Acer is the best general-purpose pick on paper
Acer’s product listing specifies the AL15-41 reference UN.31ZSI.023 with a Ryzen 5 5625U, 16 GB dual-channel memory, 512 GB SSD, Windows 11 Home and a 15.6-inch Full HD screen. The listed configuration also has two SODIMM sockets and memory upgradeability up to 32 GB. 91mobiles’ dated ₹35,999 listing makes it the clearest value candidate among the configurations here. This is a specification-based recommendation, not a claim that it has been tested against the alternatives.

The official specification lists a 36 Wh battery, but capacity alone does not establish how long the laptop will last in classes or while travelling. The material available does not establish measured runtime, screen color coverage, thermals, sustained performance, keyboard quality or service experience for this exact SKU.

When to consider the Dell or Lenovo instead
The Dell is the portability-oriented alternative in the available evidence. In its 2026 student review, 91mobiles described the Vostro 14 3440 as a student laptop under ₹40,000 at review time, reporting a 1.46 kg weight and 8 GB DDR4 expandable to 16 GB. Its listed ₹39,990 review-time price is not a guarantee of current availability at that price.
91mobiles reported the Dell’s Cinebench R23 multi-core result as 4,730, with PCMark 10 scores of 4,494 overall, 8,336 for Essentials and 6,202 for Productivity. These are results from that publisher’s review; they are not independently replicated here and should not be treated as a direct head-to-head comparison with the Acer or Lenovo.

The available listing does not establish whether its memory is upgradeable, so check the exact variant before purchase.
How to choose a laptop for college under ₹40,000
Start with course software and operating system
Check the requirements for your course before comparing processor names. Confirm that required applications work on Windows, ChromeOS or Android/PrimeOS, as appropriate. A student roundup by Jagran Reviews includes devices across those operating systems, illustrating that similarly priced machines may not run the same software. If a course requires a Windows-only application, a Chromebook or Android-based device may not be a suitable substitute.

Match memory and performance to your workload
For assignments, browsing, video classes and ordinary multitasking, the Acer’s listed 16 GB configuration is a useful differentiator; the Dell and Lenovo configurations in the available evidence have 8 GB. That does not prove a particular laptop will be faster in every task, and no exact-SKU benchmark was found for the Acer or Lenovo.
For engineering or CAD work, substantial media editing, data science, or other demanding software, check the application’s published system requirements and your institution’s guidance. The available information does not validate any of these three models for demanding professional workloads. If memory expansion matters, the Acer listing states two SODIMM sockets and support up to 32 GB; 91mobiles reports the Dell can expand from 8 GB to 16 GB. Upgradeability is not established for the Lenovo listing.

Balance screen size against how often you carry it
The Acer’s 15.6-inch Full HD screen offers a larger stated display size than the 14-inch Full HD screens listed for the Lenovo and Dell. A larger display can be more comfortable for working with several windows, while a smaller laptop may be easier to carry; the Dell review reports a weight of 1.46 kg. No direct comparative screen-quality measurements are established for these specific configurations, so resolution and size alone should not be read as a measure of brightness or color quality.
Check storage, battery and ports—not just the processor
All three configurations listed above include a 512 GB SSD, but the information provided does not establish identical drive performance. Acer lists a 36 Wh battery. Battery capacity is not a real-world runtime test: usage, screen brightness, software and power settings affect how long a charge lasts. Jagran Reviews’ examples include stated battery capacities from 33 Wh to 60.3 Wh and advertised runtimes, but those figures are not comparable lab results for the three laptops in this guide.

Check the manufacturer’s specification for the exact SKU to confirm the ports you need, especially if you plan to connect an external display, storage device or wired network adapter. Do not assume a port is present based on the model family alone.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is 8 GB RAM enough for a student laptop?
It can be adequate for basic coursework such as documents, web research and video classes, but needs depend on how many applications and browser tabs you use and what your course software requires. The configurations in this guide show the practical distinction: the Acer listing has 16 GB, while the Dell and Lenovo listings have 8 GB. The Dell review says its memory can be expanded to 16 GB; the Acer listing specifies upgradeability up to 32 GB. The Lenovo listing does not establish an upgrade path. If you expect to keep many applications open or use heavier software, favor a confirmed 16 GB configuration or verify that an upgrade is possible.
Windows laptop or Chromebook for college?
Choose according to the applications and services your course requires, rather than assuming one operating system is universally better. Jagran Reviews’ student comparison spans Windows, ChromeOS and PrimeOS devices with differing memory and storage configurations. Confirm whether required desktop applications, exam tools, peripherals and institution systems are supported before buying. The three specific alternatives compared here are Windows configurations; the available evidence does not establish a particular Chromebook recommendation at this price.

- Match the full model reference and configuration on the retailer page to the one you intend to buy, including RAM, SSD, processor, display and operating system.
- Check the current seller, stock and final checkout price. The Acer and Lenovo amounts above are dated listing snapshots; the Dell amount is its review-time price.
- Confirm the warranty, return terms and whether any Office license is included, rather than assuming these from the product family or an older listing.
- For the Dell, confirm the current offer is still for the reviewed Vostro 14 3440 configuration. For the Lenovo, ask the seller or consult the exact model specification if memory upgradeability is important.
