For a conventional seven-string electric guitar in low-B tuning, D’Addario’s 10–59 EXL110-7 is a well-supported starting point. D’Addario says it is designed to provide similar tension to its popular six-string gauge on a seven-string guitar. It is a baseline, not a universal best: scale length, tuning, construction, and preferred feel all affect the result.
What “standard” seven-string tuning means
This guide assumes the conventional low-B tuning B1–E2–A2–D3–G3–B3–E4: the usual six-string arrangement with a low B added. If your guitar is tuned differently, gauge recommendations may change.
Seven-string sets to consider
These are manufacturer-listed options for seven-string guitars. The gauge range alone does not establish equal tension or identical feel across brands, so compare each string’s gauge rather than only the set’s first and last numbers.
| Use | Set | What the manufacturer says |
|---|---|---|
| Balanced starting point for low B | D’Addario EXL110-7, 10–59 | D’Addario calls it Regular Light and says it is optimized for similar tension on a seven-string guitar. D’Addario EXL110-7 |
| Lighter feel | D’Addario EXL120-7, 09–54 | D’Addario lists it as a flexible seven-string set. D’Addario EXL120-7 |
| Lighter feel | Ernie Ball Super Slinky, 9–52 | Ernie Ball lists it among its seven-string sets. Ernie Ball seven-string sets |
| Bend-friendly treble strings with a heavier low end | Ernie Ball Skinny Top Heavy Bottom, 10–62 | Ernie Ball describes this set as pairing bend-friendly treble strings with a heavier bottom end. Ernie Ball seven-string sets |

How to choose a gauge for your guitar
Start with tuning and scale length
String tension depends on the string’s gauge and construction, the note it is tuned to, and the guitar’s scale length. A longer scale or a different tuning can change the feel of the same set. Enter your actual scale length and tuning in D’Addario’s String Tension Pro calculator to compare setups.

Decide how you want the strings to feel
Ernie Ball’s general guide says lighter strings are easier to bend and require less effort; heavier strings need more finger pressure and exert more tension on the neck. These are broad tendencies, not a guarantee of how a particular set will feel on your instrument. Ernie Ball’s string guide also identifies scale length, tuning, and playing style as relevant considerations.
Check the seventh string separately
Two sets with similar overall gauge labels can distribute their gauges differently. If the low B feels too loose or too firm while the other strings feel right, compare the actual seventh-string gauge and the calculator’s tension estimate rather than changing the entire set by assumption.

When a custom set makes more sense
If no stock set gives you the balance you want, individual strings let you adjust one position without changing the others. Ernie Ball offers custom-gauge single strings; check its string listings for available gauges. Use a tension calculator to guide the choice, then account for how the full set feels on your guitar.

Ernie Ball’s guide to deeply dropped tunings says substantially lower tunings generally need heavier strings to avoid a loose feel. Its specific gauge examples are for six-string setups, so they should not be transferred directly to a seven-string guitar. For a seven-string alternate tuning, compare the actual notes, scale length, and string gauges rather than assuming a six-string recommendation will translate.

Is there one best gauge?
No controlled comparison establishes one of these sets as the best on every seven-string guitar. The 10–59 EXL110-7 is a defensible starting point for conventional low-B tuning because its maker specifically positions it for seven-string use. Choose lighter or heavier options according to the feel and tension you want, and verify the individual gauges against your guitar’s scale length and tuning.
