There is no single best streaming service for every US viewer. Tom’s Guide named HBO Max its one-service pick in a report published September 6, 2026, citing its library, originals and some live sports. That is an editorial recommendation, not a universal verdict: the right choice depends on the shows, sports and films you watch, as well as your budget and household’s needs.

Which streaming service is best?

If you want one paid service, HBO Max is a reasonable place to start: Tom’s Guide chose it in its September 2026 report card for its mix of library, original programming and some live sports. The same report describes Netflix as a familiar broad option, Disney+/Hulu as a broad household choice, and Apple TV as a smaller slate focused on acclaimed originals. Those descriptions can help narrow the field, but catalogs change and viewers value different things.

Tom’s Guide’s report puts the limitation plainly: “Overall, there is no perfect streaming service. Each platform has its strengths and areas for improvement.” Read its September 6, 2026 comparison for the publication’s full assessment.

How to choose the service with the shows you want

Start with what you will actually watch, rather than the size of a service’s overall catalog. A particular exclusive show, sports event or film collection may make one platform the practical choice for your household. Then check the plan details that affect how you watch and what you pay.

  • Compact without compromises: The sleek design of Roku Streaming Stick won’t block neighboring HDMI ports, and it even powers from your TV alone, plugging into the back and staying out of sight. No wall outlet, no extra cords, no clutter.
  • No more juggling remotes: Power up your TV, adjust the volume, and control your Roku device with one remote. Use your voice to quickly search, play entertainment, and more.
  • Shows on the go: Take your TV to-go when traveling—without needing to log into someone else’s device.
  • TV, simplified: With setup that only takes minutes, a simple-to-navigate Home Screen, and an uncluttered remote control that does all you need—Roku makes it easier to watch the TV you love.
  • Programs and library: Check whether the shows, films or sports you want are available in your region and on the plan you are considering. Catalogs and rights change over time.
  • Total recurring cost: Compare the subscription with any bundle or add-on you need, and check whether the displayed price assumes annual billing or another eligibility condition.
  • Ads: Confirm whether the plan includes advertising. An ad-supported entry plan is not directly comparable to an ad-free plan.
  • Household access: Check the current rules for simultaneous streams and household sharing against the number of people and devices that need access.
  • Picture quality and downloads: Verify whether the plan supports the HD or 4K quality you want and allows downloads for offline viewing.
  • Live programming: If you want live channels or sports, confirm that the service carries the specific content you watch. On-demand services and live-TV replacements are different categories.

These are the practical comparison points emphasized by Tom’s Guide’s streaming-service buying guide, including exclusive titles, household sharing, picture quality and offline viewing.

How the major services fit different viewers

Service or option May fit best if you want… What to check
HBO Max One paid service with a broad library, originals and some live sports; Tom’s Guide’s September 2026 one-service pick. The recommendation is editorial judgment, and the catalog and sports offering can change.
Netflix A familiar broad catalog and original programming. Tom’s Guide notes strengths and weaknesses in its library; check whether its current catalog has your priorities.
Disney+/Hulu Different libraries and bundle options for a household seeking broad viewing. Compare the bundle against the services and plan features your household actually needs.
Apple TV A smaller slate of acclaimed originals rather than sheer volume. Price figures differ between the 2026 sources cited below; confirm the current price with the provider.
Paramount+ Programming from the service’s current catalog that matches your interests. Plan names, included content and prices can vary; verify the details before subscribing.
Peacock NBCUniversal titles, reality programming and a library that suits your viewing. Some tiers may have a more limited catalog, so check what the specific plan includes.
Prime Video Video access that may be part of an Amazon Prime membership, or a standalone video plan. A Prime membership costs more and covers more than a standalone video subscription; compare the scope as well as the price.
Pluto TV Casual viewing or background TV without a paid subscription. It is a free ad-supported option identified by the buying guide; availability and catalog can change.

The HBO Max, Netflix, Disney+/Hulu, Apple TV, Paramount+, Peacock and Prime Video characterizations above reflect Tom’s Guide’s September 2026 comparison and its 2026 price guide; they are starting points, not guarantees about a current catalog or plan.

Is a streaming service a substitute for live TV?

Not necessarily. On-demand libraries and live-TV replacements serve different needs. If you want a live channel lineup, compare services such as YouTube TV or Hulu + Live TV separately, and verify their current channels and prices directly before choosing. The 2026 comparison does not establish a current lineup or price comparison for these services.

How much should you spend on streaming?

Use your own monthly total, not a service’s entry price, to decide whether a subscription is worth keeping. Tom’s Guide reported that more than 35% of respondents to its June 2026 streaming survey said they paid more than $60 per month on streaming. The survey methodology is not established here, so treat that as the publisher’s survey result, not as a nationally representative estimate.

Do you need a streaming device?

Only if your television does not support the apps you want or you prefer using an external player. Tom’s Guide’s compatibility table lists Amazon Fire TV among the platforms supported by multiple services, but that does not establish that a particular Fire TV model is necessary or best. Check app compatibility for your TV or device before buying; a streaming device does not itself include subscriptions.
