If you’ve finished a character-focused game and want another story-driven experience, choose by what you want more of: relationships that build over a trilogy, role-playing through dialogue and skills, a no-combat science-fiction story, or a more tightly authored arc. These recommendations offer different kinds of memorable characters and player agency; there is no single best fit for everyone.
Choose by the kind of story you want next

| Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth | A more authored, curated narrative arc | TechRadar Gaming contrasts its structure with the openness of Baldur’s Gate 3 | More linear and curated, per TechRadar Gaming |
For an ensemble cast and decisions that span a trilogy
Mass Effect Legendary Edition
Pick Mass Effect Legendary Edition if what you miss most is spending time with a cast and seeing relationships and decisions accumulate. GamesRadar+ describes the edition as bundling the trilogy and says decisions transfer between its games, making it the clearest long-form continuity option in this group.
That scale is also the commitment: it is a trilogy rather than a single contained story. The guide lists PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X. Platform and edition availability can change by region, so confirm that the listing matches your system before buying.

For role-playing through dialogue and personality
Disco Elysium: The Final Cut
In Disco Elysium: The Final Cut, the protagonist’s skills and personality shape how you engage with the world. GamesRadar+ notes that choices affect interactions and how other characters respond. It is a strong fit if you want characterization to emerge from how you speak and what you are capable of, rather than only from watching a fixed story unfold.
#1 Best Overall
Its agency is about role-playing your route through the story, not a guarantee that every decision changes the ending. Some skill choices can prevent particular interactions, so a missed conversation may be part of the path you have shaped rather than evidence that every branch leads to a new finale.
For a narrative-led change of pace
1000xResist
GameSpot describes 1000xResist as science fiction about a society and memories, built around exploration, moral choices, and multiple endings. It has no combat, making it a useful option if you want the story and its atmosphere to take priority over fighting. Its appeal is a different rhythm from a combat-heavy game, not a promise that it resembles every character-driven adventure.

Citizen Sleeper 2: Starward Vector

GameSpot’s description makes it a fit for readers who want conversations and difficult decisions at the center of an RPG’s story, rather than selecting it primarily for a particular combat format.

Metaphor: ReFantazio
Metaphor: ReFantazio pairs an RPG narrative with themes of politics, religion, and community, according to GameSpot. The key practical filter is its turn-based combat: consider whether that format is part of the experience you want before choosing it for the story alone.

For a more authored arc or more freedom to roam
Baldur’s Gate 3
If you want to customize your role and explore an open-ended RPG, Baldur’s Gate 3 is the side of the contrast TechRadar Gaming emphasizes. That openness suits players who want room to shape their experience, rather than a more tightly curated sequence.
Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth
For a more linear, curated tale, TechRadar Gaming sets Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth against the open-ended approach of Baldur’s Gate 3. Think of this as a pacing preference: a strongly authored arc may be a better next step if you want the story to guide the experience more closely.

For a story with recent award recognition
Clair Obscur: Expedition 33
Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 won Best Narrative at the 2026 Game Developers Choice Awards, which honor the best games of 2025. The awards page lists Despelote, Dispatch, Ghost of Yōtei, and Split Fiction as finalists. The accolade is a useful signal of recognition, not proof that its story or style will suit every player.
