If you want a story-led game to play with another person, start with It Takes Two: it is built specifically for two players and supports couch or online co-op. Split Fiction is another strong option, pairing two players in a story that moves between science-fiction and fantasy. Their online access and platform rules differ, so check compatibility before you buy or set up a session.
What makes a good story-driven game to play together?
For this kind of recommendation, the key is a shared campaign: both players take part in the story and its challenges, rather than simply occupying the same multiplayer space. The two picks below are designed around a pair of players, with a continuing narrative and varied gameplay.
It Takes Two: best starting point for a dedicated duo
Electronic Arts describes It Takes Two as an adventure built purely for two players. You control Cody and May, a couple turned into dolls who must work through a fantastical world and repair their fractured relationship. The journey mixes platforming, puzzles, and changing gameplay challenges.

The game supports local couch co-op and online co-op. EA’s Friend’s Pass can let an invited player join without buying a second full copy, but one player must own the game. Online Friend’s Pass play is platform-limited rather than general cross-platform play; each player also needs the relevant platform account, and some consoles require an online subscription. Review EA’s current Friend’s Pass requirements for your specific platforms before purchasing.

Steam lists Hazelight Studios as developer, Electronic Arts as publisher, and March 25, 2021 as the game’s release date. Its store page identifies both local and online co-op: It Takes Two on Steam.
Split Fiction: best for a newer, genre-hopping adventure
Split Fiction follows Mio and Zoe, two writers trapped in the stories they create. EA’s premise moves between science-fiction and fantasy settings, with platforming, stealth, puzzles, and other changing challenges. It is a good fit if you want a two-player adventure that shifts its world and style as the story unfolds.

Friend’s Pass and cross-play
EA describes Split Fiction’s Friend’s Pass as supporting cross-play among PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC. One player must own the full game; the pass is not a full copy for both players. EA also lists installation, persistent internet access, and an applicable platform account as requirements. Confirm the current platform support and Friend’s Pass terms for your setup.
Which game should you choose?
| What matters | It Takes Two | Split Fiction |
|---|---|---|
| Story | Cody and May try to repair their relationship after being turned into dolls. | Writers Mio and Zoe move through science-fiction and fantasy stories. |
| Play together | Couch co-op or online co-op. | Split-screen adventure and online Friend’s Pass. |
| Friend’s Pass | One player needs the full game; online play is platform-limited, not general cross-platform play. | One player needs the full game; EA describes cross-play across PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC. |
| Best fit | A relationship-centered adventure with varied challenges, especially for a pair sharing a couch. | A genre-hopping adventure for players who want contrasting sci-fi and fantasy worlds. |
Both are purpose-built for two rather than co-op modes added to a broader single-player game. If you plan to play online, check that your platforms can connect under the game’s current rules; the Friend’s Pass does not remove all ownership, account, or service requirements.
