There is no single packaged snack or carbohydrate amount that is best for everyone with diabetes. Start with the serving size and total carbohydrate for the portion you will actually eat, then compare fiber, added sugars, sodium, saturated fat and ingredients. Choose an amount that fits your own meal plan; when a snack contains carbohydrate, pairing it with protein, healthy fat or fiber can slow how quickly blood sugar rises.

How to compare packaged snacks

  1. Check serving size and servings per container. Nutrition Facts amounts apply to the listed serving, which may be smaller than the amount you plan to eat. If you eat twice the listed amount, you generally take in twice the listed carbohydrate and other nutrients. Portioning food from a larger bag can make it easier to track what you eat. The American Diabetes Association explains how to read Nutrition Facts labels.
  2. Use total carbohydrate as your starting point. Total carbohydrate includes sugars, starches and fiber. If you count carbs, compare the amount for your actual portion with your personal plan rather than choosing by the front-of-package sugar claim. The CDC notes that one carbohydrate serving for meal planning is about 15 grams; that is a counting convention, not a recommended snack size or target for everyone. CDC’s carb-counting guide says, “Sugars and starches raise your blood sugar, but fiber doesn’t.”
  3. Compare fiber. Fiber appears within total carbohydrate on the label. It can be a useful way to compare otherwise similar snacks, but do not automatically subtract all fiber from total carbs or disregard the number in your own plan. ADA label guidance describes 2.5 grams or more per serving as a “good source” and 5 grams or more as “high fiber.” These are label descriptions, not proof that a product will produce a particular glucose response. ADA’s label guide also provides those definitions.
  4. Distinguish total sugars from added sugars. The panel lists them separately. Fruit and dairy can contain naturally occurring sugars, while added sugars are introduced during processing. The ingredient list can help you spot sweeteners: ingredients are listed in descending order by weight, and sugar may appear as syrup, molasses, caramel, honey, agave, juice or a word ending in “-ose.” A sweetener high on the list is a clue, but the ingredient list does not replace the Nutrition Facts amounts. See the CDC guide to spotting hidden sugars.
  5. Check sodium and saturated fat for the bigger nutrition picture. They are not substitutes for total carbohydrate when planning for glucose, but they matter to overall food choices. Use % Daily Value to compare similar products. ADA label guidance gives under 2,300 mg of sodium per day as a general recommendation; it is not an individualized target. Review ADA’s guidance and follow any target given by your care team.
  6. Read past front-of-package claims. “Sugar-free,” “reduced sugar” and “no sugar added” do not necessarily mean carbohydrate-free or lower in total carbohydrate than another product. “Net carbs” is not a legally defined substitute for the total carbohydrate line, and ADA cautions that the effects of fiber and sugar alcohols cannot be precisely determined from a label alone. Compare the Nutrition Facts panel instead. ADA explains label claims and total carbohydrates.

Snack combinations to consider

A packaged snack does not have to be a single product. Combining a carbohydrate-containing food with protein, healthy fat or fiber can be a practical way to build a snack; CDC guidance says these pairings slow how quickly blood sugar rises. ADA examples include fruit with cheese or nuts, carrots or celery with hummus or guacamole, and apple slices or celery with nut butter. These are options to consider, not a guarantee of an individual glucose response. See the ADA’s simple diabetes meal plan and its overview of carbohydrates and fiber.

Packaged nuts

Unsalted mixed nuts are one portable category to compare: ADA lists nuts among fiber-containing foods and suggests fruit with nuts. Check the specific package’s serving size, total carbohydrate, sodium and added sugars. Nut products vary, and a small portion can be calorie-dense, so use the portion that fits your needs.

How much carbohydrate should a diabetes snack have?

There is no universal carbohydrate target for a diabetes snack. Meal plans account for individual goals, preferences, lifestyle and medicines. If you use mealtime insulin, carbohydrate counting may be part of matching food with your prescribed dose; do not change a dose based on a general snack rule. Ask your diabetes care team or a registered dietitian for an individual target. CDC’s meal-planning guidance explains why plans are individualized, and ADA recommends noticing how foods affect you.

What to remember about fiber

Fiber can help distinguish snacks, but increasing it suddenly—especially through added fiber or supplements—may cause gas, bloating or constipation. ADA recommends being mindful of that effect in its overview of carbohydrates.
