For most web and social publishing, MP4 with H.264 is a practical delivery default—and YouTube explicitly recommends that combination for uploads. It is not a universal choice for camera originals, editing masters, every platform, or every presentation app. Choose the export around the destination: the container and codec must work there, while aspect ratio, resolution, frame rate, and bitrate determine how the picture fits and how large the file becomes.

What “video format” means when choosing stock footage

“Format” can refer to several distinct properties. MP4 and MOV are containers: they package video, audio, and related data. H.264 and ProRes are codecs: methods for encoding the video stream. Resolution, frame rate, aspect ratio, and bitrate describe other properties of the footage or export. A file extension alone therefore does not tell you everything about compatibility or visual suitability.

For YouTube uploads, the platform recommends an MP4 container with H.264 video, progressive scan, and a frame rate matching the source. See YouTube’s recommended upload encoding settings. This is upload guidance for YouTube, not a rule that every stock clip or editing master must use those settings.

Choose the aspect ratio for the destination

Start with where the video will appear, then select stock footage that can fill that canvas. Landscape 16:9 is a common fit for website players and horizontal viewing; vertical 9:16 is suited to placements such as TikTok, Reels, and Stories; square 1:1 may suit square feed placements. Adobe’s published examples include 1920×1080 horizontal, 1080×1920 vertical, and 1000×1000 square, but those examples date to 2022 and are not a substitute for current, placement-specific platform specifications. See Adobe’s social-media video dimension examples.

Reframing a clip can make it work in another aspect ratio, but cropping can cut off a person, product, caption, or other important detail. Preview every destination version rather than assuming one export will suit all placements. Adobe’s workflow guidance discusses choosing platform canvases and reframing in its guide to video formats.

Compare stock clips before you edit

When two clips show the right subject, compare the attributes that affect the finished version—not just the thumbnail or resolution.

What to compare Why it matters
Orientation and aspect ratio A clip already framed for the target canvas may need less cropping. Check whether the subject remains visible in each intended version.
Native resolution Higher-resolution footage can provide more room to crop or reframe, but an export’s resolution should still suit the destination and can increase file size.
Frame rate Check whether the source rate fits the project and intended motion. For YouTube, its guidance is to encode and upload at the rate recorded.
Container, codec, and editor compatibility Confirm that your editing app can work with the downloaded file and that the final export meets the destination’s guidance. A container such as MP4 is not itself a codec.
Bitrate and file size Bitrate affects file size and is one of the export settings to consider against the platform’s guidance and upload constraints.
License and permitted use Verify the stock provider’s current license terms for the intended use. Technical compatibility does not establish permission to publish.

Adobe Stock’s contributor specifications are useful for understanding what that library accepts from contributors, but they are not a checklist for every buyer or publishing platform. Its page was updated 2 September 2026. See Adobe Stock’s video requirements.

Stock submission specifications are not delivery settings

Adobe Stock accepts MOV, MPG, or MP4 submissions and recommends ProRes or H.264 codecs. Its listed standard frame rates are 23.98, 24, 25, 29.97, 30, 50, 59.94, and 60 fps. For contributors, it advises uploading at the native frame size, shooting vertical footage natively in 9:16 rather than rotating horizontal footage, and using 1:1 for square footage. Those instructions describe submissions to Adobe Stock; they do not mean every consumer should export a finished social post in ProRes or use any one frame rate.

The same Adobe Stock page lists horizontal examples including 1920×1080 HD, 2048×1080 2K, 3840×2160 UHD, 4096×2160 4K, and 4096×2304 4K 16:9; vertical examples include 1080×1920 and 2160×3840; square examples include 1080×1080 and 2160×2160. Treat these as that contributor page’s examples, not universal platform requirements.

Set resolution and bitrate with file size in mind

Higher resolution and bitrate generally mean larger exports. YouTube publishes reference bitrates for SDR uploads; these are recommendations, not universal upload requirements. The figures below are from YouTube’s encoding guidance.

YouTube SDR export Reference bitrate
1080p, standard frame rate (24, 25, or 30 fps) 8 Mbps
1080p, high frame rate (48, 50, or 60 fps) 12 Mbps
2160p (4K), standard frame rate 35–45 Mbps
2160p (4K), high frame rate 53–68 Mbps

These figures apply to YouTube’s SDR recommendations; the same guidance gives different values for HDR. Do not transfer the table directly to another site or social placement as though it were a cross-platform standard. Also keep frame rate aligned with the source when exporting for YouTube, and deinterlace interlaced footage as its guidance advises.

Prepare different versions for social platforms

A stock clip intended for multiple channels may need separate edits or exports: for example, a horizontal version for a website or YouTube and a vertical crop for a short-form feed. Adobe’s 2022 examples provide a useful orientation starting point, but platform requirements and placement rules change. Microsoft’s current article reproduces a table attributed to Sprout Social and notes that it covers general videos, not ads, Shorts, or Reels; it should not be treated as a specification for those excluded placements. Check the current official requirements for the exact platform and placement before final export. See Microsoft’s social-media video specifications overview.

For presentations, test the actual playback setup

There is no single presentation-specific container or codec requirement established here that can safely be applied to every app and device. Before relying on a stock video in a presentation, test the exported file in the presentation software and on the device that will play it. If playback is unreliable, consult that application’s current official embedding or export guidance and produce a compatible version.

Keep source footage and project files backed up

If you may re-edit, reframe, or export the material again, preserve the downloaded source footage and project assets rather than keeping only a compressed delivery copy. Adobe recommends keeping three copies in at least two places, with one copy physically separate. This is a backup workflow recommendation, not a video-format requirement. See Adobe’s video backup guidance.
