For faster Steam downloads, remove unnecessary download limits and check whether installation or storage—not your internet connection—is slowing progress. For smoother online co-op, pause large downloads or cap their bandwidth. Steam Remote Play is a separate case: it streams video and audio from a host PC, so a wired host connection and tuned streaming quality can help.

Manage Steam downloads without disrupting a game

Choose whether to limit download speed

Open Steam > Settings > Downloads and check Limit download speed. Leave downloads unlimited when you want Steam to use available capacity. Set a limit when downloads compete with an online game, a call, or other household traffic. A cap reserves some capacity for other uses; it does not make the download itself faster.

Steam may display rates in kilobytes or megabytes per second, while internet plans are usually advertised in bits per second. Convert units before comparing the client’s rate with your plan. Even then, the Steam figure is a download measurement, not a clean test of your internet connection.

Control the update queue and timing

Use the Download Manager to review queued downloads, change their order, and schedule updates for convenient hours. Per-game automatic-update behavior and priority are available under that game’s Properties > Updates. Launching a game can override a scheduled window if that game needs an update.

Allow downloads during gameplay only when useful

By default, Steam pauses downloads when you launch a game so game network activity can take priority. Steam Support explains: “Steam automatically pauses your downloads when a game is launched in order to prioritize the network activity for the game itself.”

To keep a download moving while playing, open Steam > Settings > Downloads and enable Allow Downloads During Gameplay. If online co-op becomes choppy, turn it off again or limit the download rate. There is no universal cap: the right balance depends on available bandwidth, other household use, the game, and your connection.

Try another download region only to diagnose download problems

A download region affects the content-delivery path Steam uses. If a download stalls or an error suggests a server problem, select the region closest to you; if needed, test the next closest region and compare. Switch back if it does not help. Changing this setting is not a reliable way to improve matchmaking or reduce latency in a game.

Troubleshoot lag in native online co-op

Native multiplayer exchanges gameplay data with a game server or other players. Its network path is not necessarily the same as Steam’s download route, and some games choose their own server regions.

  1. Check the game’s connection information. If the game shows latency to its actual server or peer, use that rather than Steam’s download region to assess the match.
  2. Pause bandwidth-heavy background activity. Stop large Steam downloads and, while diagnosing, other transfers that may compete with gameplay. Steam notes that background programs using bandwidth can contribute to choppy play and lag.
  3. Investigate the local network and game conditions. If lag continues, check Wi-Fi congestion and router conditions, then consider the game’s server or peer connection. A Steam download setting cannot correct latency caused by the game’s server or its network path.

Improve Steam Remote Play or Steam Link streaming

Remote Play is different from native multiplayer: the host PC streams game audio and video to another device. The local connection between the host, router, and client can therefore affect what you see and hear, even when the game’s multiplayer connection is fine.

Stabilize the connection between host and client

Steam recommends connecting the host computer directly to the router with Ethernet when supported. If the host is on Wi-Fi, try an Ethernet cable as a troubleshooting step—not as a promise of higher internet-plan speeds. Steam identifies wireless interference, and a host transmitting wirelessly while the router retransmits to a wireless client, as common causes of poor streaming.

Steam Deck Oled 512 GB Handheld Gaming Console with 1280x800 HDR OLED display, Up to 90Hz Refresh Rate, Wi-Fi 6E, Bluetooth 5.3, With Carrying Case & 45W Power Supply
  • 512 GB NVMe SSD: Fast storage for quicker game load times and space for larger game libraries.
  • OLED Display: 1200x800 resolution with deep contrasts and vibrant colors for a captivating visual experience.
  • Custom AMD APU: Power-efficient Zen 2 CPU and RDNA 2 GPU for desktop-level gaming performance.
  • Expandable Storage: Add more space with a microSD card slot, ensuring you can bring even more games with you.
  • Versatile Controls: With built-in thumbsticks, trackpads, and touchscreen controls, you have full control over your gaming experience.

If wiring is impractical, test a 5 GHz Wi-Fi band from the actual play location and reduce competing large transfers or streams. Although 5 GHz may avoid congestion on 2.4 GHz, its range can be shorter, so the signal at the client matters.

Use the performance overlay to guide changes

Enable the Remote Play performance overlay and watch its network-time graph when a hitch occurs. Large spikes in variable network time indicate a streaming network problem. Change one setting at a time so you can tell whether the change helped.

Balance streaming quality and bandwidth

Choose Balanced or Fast streaming quality when stability and lower bandwidth use matter more than image quality. In advanced settings, start with a low bandwidth limit, raise it gradually until hitches begin, then return to the last stable setting. Steam Support’s example of starting at 3 Mbit/s is a Remote Play tuning starting point, not a universal recommendation for downloads or native co-op. Enable network prioritization if the option is available.

Router QoS or device-priority controls may help prioritize the host and streaming client, but names and behavior vary by router. Verify any change during actual play rather than assuming it will improve every network.

Tell a network slowdown from a slow installation

Steam’s displayed download rate can dip while the client installs a game. Installation may use CPU and disk resources, and an SD card’s write speed can affect total installation time. Steam Support notes that “the reported download speed isn’t necessarily representative of your download capacity because the download can be throttled to match the speed at which Steam can perform the other tasks related to installing a game.”

When the graph rises and falls, compare Steam’s network and disk activity and check the target drive. To assess the internet connection separately, run an independent speed test. A fluctuating Steam graph alone does not establish that your ISP is slow.

Choose settings for the situation

Situation Setting or action Trade-off
Downloading as quickly as available capacity allows Leave the Steam download limit off. Steam may use capacity needed by other household traffic.
Playing native online co-op while Steam downloads Keep downloads paused by default, or enable downloads during gameplay and apply a cap. Pausing favors game traffic; allowing downloads keeps them moving but may create contention.
Playing through Remote Play Prefer Ethernet for the host when supported; otherwise test Wi-Fi band, signal, and interference. Wired connections are less convenient; Wi-Fi performance depends on conditions at the play location.
Remote Play hitches under load Lower streaming quality or bandwidth, then adjust while observing the performance overlay. Lower settings use less bandwidth but reduce visual quality.
Steam shows low or uneven download speed during installation Inspect disk activity, the target drive, and CPU work before blaming the internet connection. Storage or installation work can limit the displayed rate even when the connection has capacity.

These steps are practical troubleshooting guidance, not guaranteed performance gains. Results vary with Steam client version, operating system, game networking, router, ISP, storage, and household traffic; setting labels may also change as the client is updated.
