There is no single SSD that fits every laptop. First confirm the exact model’s supported drive type, interface, length and clearance; then choose a compatible 2.5-inch SATA or M.2 drive based on capacity, workload and price. This guide revisits the 2025 topic with compatibility advice current to October 8, 2026. The Samsung models below are examples for matching systems, not universal recommendations.

Check what your laptop supports before choosing an SSD

Start with the laptop’s exact model number and consult its service manual or manufacturer compatibility listing. Confirm whether the system has an upgradeable 2.5-inch bay, an M.2 slot, or both. A laptop may have no user-accessible storage upgrade, and an M.2 slot alone does not establish which drive protocol it accepts.

  • Form factor and dimensions: Check the required drive size and, for M.2, the supported length and available clearance. A drive with a heatsink may not fit beneath a laptop cover.
  • Interface and protocol: Determine whether the slot supports SATA, NVMe over PCIe, or a specific subset. M.2 describes a form factor and connector family; it does not prove NVMe or SATA compatibility.
  • Keying: Check the slot’s connector key and the drive’s key. Samsung’s installation FAQ explains B-Key and M-Key support and says Samsung’s NVMe M.2 drives use M-Key.
  • Capacity and restrictions: Confirm the laptop supports the capacity you want and check any model-specific service or firmware requirements.

Samsung’s SSD upgrade page distinguishes 2.5-inch SATA and M.2 NVMe upgrade options. Treat them as different paths, not interchangeable drive shapes.

Choose the upgrade path that matches the laptop

2.5-inch SATA SSD

Choose this type only if the laptop has a compatible SATA connection and physical 2.5-inch bay. It can be a practical replacement for an existing 2.5-inch hard drive or SATA SSD, but its interface limits performance compared with many NVMe drives. Samsung lists the 870 EVO as a SATA example and gives a maximum SATA interface limit of 560/530 MB/s sequential read/write; those are product/interface specifications, not a prediction of speed in a particular laptop.

M.2 NVMe SSD

Choose an M.2 NVMe drive only when the laptop’s documentation confirms NVMe support, the correct key and drive length, and enough space for the drive. Samsung lists the 990 PRO as an M.2 NVMe example with sequential read speeds up to 7,450 MB/s. That is a manufacturer-rated figure, not a laptop benchmark.

M.2 SATA and other configurations

Some M.2 slots or drives use SATA rather than NVMe. Do not assume an NVMe drive will work simply because it physically resembles the original M.2 drive. Match both the documented protocol and physical requirements.

Compare compatible drives on the factors that matter

  1. Fit and protocol: Eliminate any drive not supported by the exact laptop model. Compatibility takes priority over speed claims.
  2. Capacity and price: Select enough usable space for the operating system, apps and files, then compare current prices per usable capacity. Prices and availability vary and should be checked when buying.
  3. Workload: Everyday browsing and office use may not benefit meaningfully from the fastest sequential-speed rating. Sustained large transfers or other write-heavy work can make workload-specific performance more relevant.
  4. Endurance and warranty: Compare the endurance rating and warranty for the exact capacity and SKU; do not assume they are identical across a product family.
  5. Thermals and clearance: Consider drive thickness, heat and whether a heatsink is required or physically possible in the laptop.
  6. Migration: Decide whether you will clone the existing drive or reinstall the operating system, and plan a backup before opening the computer.

Samsung’s Memory Buying Guide lists the 990 PRO in M.2 NVMe PCIe Gen 4.0 x4 configurations and the 9100 PRO in M.2 NVMe PCIe Gen 5.0 x4 configurations. A newer PCIe generation or higher advertised speed is not automatically a better laptop choice: the host system may not support it, and the workload may not use the extra performance. Samsung also notes that performance depends on firmware and system hardware and configuration.

Example drive Interface or configuration Published speed information When to consider it
Samsung 870 EVO 2.5-inch SATA SSD Samsung states a maximum SATA interface limit of 560/530 MB/s sequential read/write. Only for a laptop with a compatible SATA connection and physical bay.
Samsung 980 Samsung lists it as an SSD example; verify the exact SKU and interface before purchase. Samsung lists sequential reads of 3,500 MB/s. Only after checking the exact model’s interface, capacity, laptop support and dimensions.
Samsung 990 PRO M.2 NVMe; Samsung’s buying guide lists Gen 4.0 x4 configurations. Samsung’s upgrade page states sequential read speeds up to 7,450 MB/s. For a matching NVMe laptop slot with suitable physical clearance; the rated speed is not a laptop benchmark.
Samsung 9100 PRO M.2 NVMe PCIe Gen 5.0 x4 configurations, according to Samsung’s buying guide. Not stated in the cited buying-guide information. Only if the laptop supports the required configuration and the drive fits; it is not a universal choice for an unidentified laptop.

These figures are manufacturer specifications, not independent results from laptop-wide testing. The cited material does not establish an independent statistic for the outcomes of laptop SSD upgrades. For other brands or models, compare the exact SKU’s interface, rated endurance and warranty with the laptop’s requirements.

Plan the replacement, transfer and backup

Before buying or opening the laptop, read its service instructions and back up important files to a separate location. Samsung cautions in its Memory Buying Guide that “SSD installation and replacement methods may vary by device, manufacturer, and model.” Follow the laptop maker’s instructions for safe access; not every system is designed for easy replacement.

If replacing a boot drive, arrange either an operating-system reinstall or a transfer from the old drive. Samsung recommends its Data Migration software for transferring files during an SSD replacement. Its support guidance says the source drive must be smaller than the destination for its migration process, so check that requirement before relying on the tool. Keep the old drive unchanged until you have confirmed the new drive boots and your important files are accessible.
