There is no single best AAC or speech-to-text app for every nonspeaking person. Apple Live Speech is the simplest place to start if you can type and already use a supported Apple device. Proloquo4Text is a text-first AAC option, Proloquo2Go combines symbols with typing, and TD Snap offers several page sets with touch, eye-gaze, switch, and scanning access. The right choice depends on how you create messages, how you access the device, your literacy and language needs, and where you communicate.
Quick comparison
| Option | How messages are created | Access and output described by the vendor | Most useful starting point |
|---|---|---|---|
| Apple Live Speech | Typed text, with saved common phrases | Device speech; usable in person and during Phone or FaceTime calls; system voices or Personal Voice | Someone who can type and already has a supported Apple device |
| Proloquo4Text | Typing, word prediction, organized phrases, and speak-as-you-type controls | Text-to-speech with voice choices and display controls | A literate communicator who wants a text-first AAC workflow |
| Proloquo2Go | Symbols, typing, or a combination; customizable vocabulary | Spoken output; alternative access and customization features | Someone who may benefit from symbol support as well as text |
| TD Snap | Depends on the selected page set, including text, symbols, motor-plan, or aphasia-oriented layouts | Speech output with touch, eye gaze, switch, or scanning access | Someone whose access method or language needs require a configurable AAC system |
These are starting points, not rankings. A feature list cannot determine which layout, vocabulary, voice, or access method will work for one person. Try the communication approach with the intended user and obtain an AAC-focused assessment when possible.
Start with the communication problem, not the app name
An app has to let a person express what they mean quickly enough, with an access method they can operate reliably. Before downloading anything, describe the person’s current abilities and daily situations.
How will the person compose a message?
- Typing: The person can spell, select letters, and tolerate the physical effort of typing. Word prediction and saved phrases may reduce keystrokes.
- Symbols: Pictures or symbols may make message construction easier when spelling or reading is difficult. The communicator still needs a way to learn and select the vocabulary.
- A combination: Some people need symbols for frequent vocabulary and a keyboard for names, novel ideas, or detailed messages.
- Prepared phrases: A bank of phrases can make greetings, care requests, emergencies, and routine answers faster, but it should supplement—not replace—the ability to create original messages.
What physical access is sustainable?
Do not assume that a person who understands language can touch a small target or type on a standard keyboard. Check whether they can use direct touch, a physical or on-screen keyboard, a switch, eye gaze, or scanning. Consider accuracy, fatigue, tremor, range of motion, vision, hearing, and the time available in a real conversation. A method that works for five minutes may fail during a full day at school, work, or home.

Which languages and literacy skills matter?
Record the person’s preferred spoken and written languages, reading level, spelling ability, symbol comprehension, and preferred voice. A bilingual person may need different vocabulary or voices in different settings. A dated vendor announcement on October 5, 2026, says TD Snap expanded language support and personalization, including Express support for Korean and Traditional Chinese (Cantonese). That announcement applies to the named release; it does not establish that every TD Snap page set supports every language.
Where will communication happen?
List the situations that matter most: face-to-face conversation, telephone or video calls, medical appointments, school or work, public transport, emergencies, and private messages. Portability, screen visibility, a quiet place to type, and whether the listener can wait all affect the practical choice.
Apple Live Speech: built-in typing-to-voice
Apple describes Live Speech as a way for someone who cannot speak, has a speech disability, or prefers not to use their voice to type a message and have the device speak it aloud. It works in person and during Phone and FaceTime calls. Common phrases can be saved for quick access, and the user can select a system voice or Personal Voice.

When Live Speech is a sensible first test
- The person already uses a supported Apple device and can type or select text accurately.
- Communication is mostly sentence-based rather than dependent on a symbol vocabulary.
- Phone or FaceTime access is important.
- The person wants a built-in feature before considering a separate AAC app or dedicated device.
What to verify before relying on it
Apple says availability can vary by device, region, and language. Check the exact operating-system version, device model, language, and regional availability in Apple’s current accessibility documentation. Test both in-person speech and calls: a feature that is enabled on the device still needs to be usable at the distance, speed, and volume required in daily life.

Live Speech is not the same as a full symbol-based AAC system
The documented feature is typed text that is spoken. The available information does not establish a symbol-based language system, specialized scanning, or eye-gaze access. If typing is unreliable or the person needs symbol-supported composition, compare an AAC app designed around those needs instead.
Proloquo4Text: a text-first AAC workflow
Proloquo4Text is presented as a text-to-speech AAC app for people who cannot rely on their voice. Its listing describes word prediction, saved and organized phrases, speak-as-you-type controls, display options, and natural-sounding voice choices.
Who should investigate it?
It is a reasonable candidate when the communicator can read and spell, wants to generate original sentences, and benefits from reducing the number of keystrokes. Organizing phrases can help with recurring conversations while preserving a text-first method for new messages.

Questions to test in a trial
- Can the person enter text accurately with the available keyboard or alternative input?
- Does word prediction reflect the person’s vocabulary, names, and preferred language?
- Can they control whether text is spoken letter by letter, word by word, or after a complete phrase using the app’s available settings?
- Are the display size, contrast, and spacing comfortable for the intended user?
- Can frequently used phrases be found without interrupting the conversation?
The product information does not establish individual clinical fit or superiority over other AAC approaches. Current price and purchase terms can change, so check the current official listing before committing.

Proloquo2Go: symbols, typing, and spoken output
Proloquo2Go is described as a customizable symbol-based AAC app with speech output and a typing pathway. AssistiveWare describes vocabulary that can grow from single words to complex sentences and includes alternative-access and customization features.
Why symbol support can matter
Symbols may help a communicator who cannot spell fluently, is still developing literacy, or needs a faster route to common concepts. They can also coexist with typing: a person might select a symbol for “drink,” then type a specific drink or name. The communicator’s own language, motor skills, and preferences should determine the vocabulary arrangement.
Compatibility named in the app listing
The cited App Store listing names iPhone, iPad, and Apple Watch compatibility. Verify the current operating-system requirements and whether the specific device provides the screen size and access method the person needs. Compatibility with a device does not by itself prove that the layout is usable for a particular communicator.
Plan customization with the user
- Ask which words and messages should be immediately visible.
- Keep high-value phrases reachable without forcing the person through many screens.
- Allow a keyboard or other text-entry route for names and unfamiliar ideas.
- Test the arrangement with the communicator, not only with a caregiver or professional.
TD Snap: multiple page sets and access methods
TD Snap is a collection of AAC page sets rather than one fixed communication layout. Tobii Dynavox lists Core First, Motor Plan, Express, Text, Scanning, and Aphasia page sets. The product information describes speech output and access through touch, eye gaze, or switch; a scanning page set is included for people who cannot reliably select targets directly.

Choosing among the page sets
- Core First: A page-set option to investigate when commonly used core vocabulary is central to communication.
- Motor Plan: A page-set option to investigate when consistent motor patterns are important.
- Express: A page-set option included in TD Snap’s current set; the October 5, 2026 announcement describes expanded language support and personalization for Express.
- Text: A page-set option to investigate for a communicator who primarily composes through text.
- Scanning: A page-set option for switch-based or scanning access.
- Aphasia: A page-set option intended for people whose communication needs relate to aphasia; an individualized assessment is still needed.
These labels are not a prescription. The most appropriate page set depends on language, literacy, motor access, and the person’s ability to learn and navigate the layout.
Platforms and hardware
Tobii Dynavox describes standalone TD Snap availability for iPad and Windows, with other offerings tied to compatible Tobii Dynavox devices. Check the exact platform, hardware, operating-system version, and purchase terms before buying. A compatible iPad may be a practical hardware path for some users, but nobody should assume that every communicator needs to purchase one.

Message creation
Choose text-first options when spelling and keyboard access are dependable. Consider symbol-supported options when symbols reduce the effort of finding or constructing words. A combination can be valuable when the person needs both fast routine messages and unrestricted novel language.
Access method
Confirm the access method for the exact app and page set, not merely the brand name. Live Speech and Proloquo4Text center on typed text in the documented descriptions. Proloquo2Go includes alternative access features, while TD Snap explicitly lists touch, eye gaze, switch, and scanning across its page-set offering. Test target size, dwell or selection timing, scanning speed, and fatigue with the intended user.

Language and voice
Check whether the required written language, vocabulary, and voice are available on the selected device. Voice quality is personal: some people prefer a natural-sounding synthetic voice, others prefer a familiar system voice or Personal Voice. Do not infer language support for an entire product from one page set or one release note.
Speed and independence
Measure practical tasks rather than abstract feature counts. Ask the person to greet someone, answer a question, request help, name an unfamiliar item, and say “no” or correct a misunderstanding. Count the steps only as a guide; a slower method that the communicator controls may be preferable to a faster method that requires another person to guess.
Setting and portability
A phone may be convenient for short interactions, while a larger tablet can provide bigger targets and more room for symbols. Calls, in-person conversations, and noisy public settings may require different phrase access or volume settings. If communication must continue when a device is unavailable, prepare a backup such as printed words, a writing method, or another agreed signal.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsCost, support, and funding
Prices, subscriptions, trials, hardware requirements, and regional funding rules change. Compare the complete cost—not only the app purchase—including a compatible device, mounting, switch or eye-gaze hardware, accessories, training, and ongoing support. Verify terms directly with the current app listing, manufacturer, clinician, or local funding program. There is no universal funding rule that applies to every country or insurance system.
A practical selection and setup process
- Write a one-page communication profile. Record languages, reading and spelling abilities, preferred topics, motor and vision considerations, current devices, and the situations in which communication is most urgent.
- Choose two contrasting approaches. For example, compare a text-first option with a symbol-supported option, or compare direct touch with scanning if access is uncertain.
- Configure only essential vocabulary first. Add names, care requests, emergency messages, greetings, refusals, and high-frequency needs. Keep the person’s own wording.
- Test the same tasks in realistic settings. Try a quiet room, a noisy place, a phone or video call when relevant, and a conversation with an unfamiliar listener.
- Record observable barriers. Note missed targets, fatigue, navigation errors, misunderstood symbols, slow phrase retrieval, and times when another person had to take over.
- Adjust with the communicator. Change target size, page organization, phrase wording, voice, scanning timing, or keyboard settings only after asking what felt difficult.
- Arrange professional assessment when possible. An AAC-experienced speech-language pathologist or assistive-technology professional can evaluate access and communication needs. Tobii Dynavox describes an SLP conducting an assessment and writing an evaluation; that vendor guidance does not replace individualized clinical advice.
- Re-test after changes. A layout that works initially may become inadequate as vocabulary, motor skills, language, or daily environments change.
Troubleshooting common failures
The device is enabled but does not speak
- Check mute, volume, output routing, and the selected voice.
- Test a short phrase in the intended setting rather than relying on a settings screen.
- For calls, test both Phone and FaceTime workflows if those are important.
- Confirm that the device, language, and region support the feature.
Typing is accurate but too slow
- Build and organize frequently used phrases.
- Test word prediction and speak-as-you-type controls in a text-first app.
- Compare a larger keyboard or alternative access method.
- Use symbols for routine vocabulary if selecting them is faster and acceptable to the communicator.
Symbols are confusing or do not reflect the person’s meaning
- Ask the communicator what each symbol means to them instead of assuming.
- Remove or relocate low-value choices that increase search time.
- Keep a typing route for names, places, and new ideas.
- Revisit the vocabulary with an AAC professional if comprehension or navigation remains difficult.
Touch causes fatigue or missed selections
- Try larger targets and a different device size.
- Investigate switch, eye-gaze, or scanning access where the selected app and page set support it.
- Test selection timing and positioning with the person’s usual posture and mounting.
- Plan breaks and a backup communication method for long interactions.
The required language is missing
Check the exact page set, voice, device, and release notes. TD Snap’s October 5, 2026 announcement concerns expanded support in Express for Korean and Traditional Chinese (Cantonese); it is not evidence that all TD Snap content or other apps support those languages. If support is essential, confirm it before purchase.
What the available evidence can—and cannot—tell you
The documented features support a useful shortlist, not a universal winner. They do not establish that one app works equally well for all users, provide a complete current price ranking, settle Android availability, or define funding eligibility by geography. Product features, supported languages, prices, and platform requirements can change. Verify those details in the current official product and app-store listings, and involve the person who will communicate in every decision.
Bottom line
Start with Apple Live Speech if a person can type and already has a supported Apple device. Investigate Proloquo4Text for a text-first AAC workflow, Proloquo2Go for symbol-plus-typing communication, and TD Snap when page-set choice or touch, eye-gaze, switch, or scanning access is central. The best app is the one the communicator can access, understand, customize, and use independently in the situations that matter.
