For the simplest stereo upgrade, choose Roku Wireless Speakers only if your television is a compatible Roku TV system. They pair directly with supported Roku TVs, but they do not work with a regular TV that uses a Roku streaming stick or player. If you want a soundbar or receiver, check your TV’s ports and the audio device’s compatibility first: HDMI ARC/eARC or optical may be the right connection, depending on both devices.
There is no single best speaker for every Roku TV. The right pick depends on the exact TV model, whether you want stereo or surround sound, available connections, and where you can place powered speakers.
Best speaker options for a Roku TV
These options differ in compatibility and setup, not in a verified sound-quality ranking. Roku’s guidance establishes supported connections and configurations; it does not provide comparative listening tests.

| Option | Best fit | Connection and key limits |
|---|---|---|
| Roku Wireless Speakers | A compatible Roku TV owner who wants a simple stereo pair | Pairs directly with specified Roku hosts. Each speaker needs power, and Wi-Fi is used for discovery and pairing. When paired directly to a Roku TV, its built-in speakers turn off. Not compatible with non-Roku TVs or standalone Roku streaming players. (Roku speaker setup and pairing; Roku audio compatibility guidance) |
| Roku TV Ready soundbar | A buyer who wants a wired soundbar designed to integrate with a Roku TV | Connects to the TV’s HDMI ARC/eARC port. Check that the soundbar is Roku TV Ready and that both devices support the intended ARC/eARC features. (Roku TV Ready setup guidance) |
| Other compatible soundbar or AVR | A buyer whose TV and audio equipment support HDMI ARC or optical audio | Connect through a compatible HDMI ARC port or optical output. Available formats and features depend on both devices. (Roku surround connection guidance) |
| Roku Wireless Bass or Bass Pro | An owner of a supported Roku audio setup who wants a bass add-on | Compatibility varies by configuration. Roku says neither can connect to a Roku TV while a Roku TV Ready soundbar is connected. (Roku audio compatibility guidance; Roku Bass compatibility guidance) |
Is your television a compatible Roku TV?
Before buying Roku Wireless Speakers, distinguish a Roku TV system from an ordinary television with a Roku streaming stick or player. Roku’s wireless speakers are for specified Roku TV and Roku audio hosts; they do not pair with other TVs or standalone Roku streaming players. Roku lists these speaker varieties: Roku Wireless Speakers (model 9020R2), Roku TV Wireless Speakers (9030), and onn. Roku Wireless Surround Speakers (9040). Check the model and host compatibility guidance before purchasing, because supported combinations vary. (Roku speaker setup and pairing; Roku audio compatibility guidance)
#1 Best Overall

- Simple sound settings: Automatically lower loud commercials, boost the volume of voices, and optimize the sound for night listening, all in one place
- Clutter-free setup: Easy to set up with your Roku TV-just plug it into power to get started. The wireless connection makes it a suitable fit for any setup
- Place it anywhere: Plug in your Roku TV Wireless Soundbar, then place it below your TV or wall mount it for your desired setup
With a Roku TV, supported wireless speakers serve as a stereo pair. Roku describes other configurations with specified soundbar hosts, where speakers can serve as surround speakers. The number of supported speakers depends on the host: Roku’s setup guidance allows up to two with a Roku TV and up to four with specified soundbar hosts. A Streambar or Smart Soundbar connected to the TV changes the pairing options; speakers cannot pair directly to the TV system in that situation, though a supported setup may pair them to the soundbar. (Roku speaker setup and pairing; Roku audio compatibility guidance)
When Roku Wireless Speakers make sense
Pick this route if you have a compatible Roku TV and want a straightforward stereo setup without running an audio cable from the television. The speakers still need outlets, and Wi-Fi is needed during discovery and pairing. Roku says they work up to 30 feet away with a good wireless signal; that is manufacturer guidance, not an independently measured range or a performance guarantee. (Roku speaker setup and pairing)

- Confirm your TV is a compatible Roku TV system, not just a TV with a Roku streaming device.
- Check that the speaker and host models support the combination you want.
- Plan for power near each speaker; wireless does not mean battery-powered.
- Account for the fact that directly paired speakers turn off the TV’s built-in speakers.
Roku’s placement guidance notes that room characteristics affect speaker placement. Treat its placement suggestions as a starting point and adjust for the room. Wall mounts and stands are not included, so factor in how you will position the speakers. (Roku speaker placement guidance)
When to choose a soundbar or receiver instead
A soundbar or AV receiver is the alternative when you want a wired connection, your TV is not compatible with Roku Wireless Speakers, or you need a configuration supported by your specific equipment. Roku documents HDMI ARC and optical audio as connection paths for a soundbar or AVR; the right one depends on the ports and features on both devices. (Roku surround connection guidance)

Roku TV Ready soundbar over HDMI ARC/eARC
For Roku integration, verify the soundbar is certified as Roku TV Ready on its packaging, manual, or manufacturer product page. Roku’s setup uses one HDMI cable from the soundbar to the TV port labeled HDMI ARC or HDMI eARC. The TV can then detect the soundbar and start on-screen setup. The ARC/eARC port matters: Roku explains that only this port supports the return communication used for the integrated setup. (Roku TV Ready soundbar setup guidance)
Do not assume that an eARC label alone guarantees every eARC feature. Roku says eARC benefits require an eARC-capable soundbar and an eARC-capable TV; it specifies a High Speed HDMI cable with Ethernet to take full advantage of eARC. An eARC soundbar connected to an ARC port, or an ARC soundbar connected to an eARC port, can use standard ARC functionality. (Roku eARC guidance)

Other soundbars and AV receivers
If the device is not Roku TV Ready, check its manual and the TV’s manual for matching connection support. Use HDMI ARC when both devices support it and the relevant features you need; use optical when the devices support that path and it fits your requirements. Do not assume that every audio format or control feature works over every connection: Roku notes that supported capabilities vary by hardware. (Roku surround connection guidance)

Roku’s wireless surround combinations are model-specific. Its advanced soundbar-plus-speaker guidance applies only to specified Plus and Pro TV families and supported audio hosts, so confirm the exact TV or soundbar model before buying extra speakers. Choose cables and accessories after confirming the connection
- HDMI: Use the TV’s ARC/eARC port for a soundbar connection that relies on ARC/eARC. For supported eARC use, Roku specifies a High Speed HDMI cable with Ethernet.
- Optical: Use an optical audio cable only when the TV and soundbar or receiver both support optical audio.
- Wireless speakers: Provide an outlet for each speaker and a suitable placement; Roku says a good wireless signal is needed for pairing.
- Stands or mounts: Roku says these are not included with its wireless speakers.
Check what cables and accessories are already included with your equipment before buying anything extra. (Roku connection guidance; Roku speaker placement and setup guidance)
Quick Recap
Quick decision guide
- Identify the host: Confirm the exact Roku TV, Streambar, Smart Soundbar, or other audio host model. A Roku streaming stick or player by itself does not make a non-Roku television compatible with Roku Wireless Speakers.
- Choose the intended setup: For stereo from a compatible Roku TV, consider Roku Wireless Speakers. For a wired soundbar or receiver, check ARC/eARC and optical support on both devices.
- Verify special features: For Roku integration, confirm Roku TV Ready certification. For eARC, verify eARC support on both devices and the cable requirement.
- Check expansions: Confirm supported surround and bass combinations for the exact model before adding speakers or a subwoofer.
- Plan the room: Locate power outlets, decide where speakers can sit, and account for the room’s layout.
