There is no single best soundbar for every room or listener. For a complete premium system, RTINGS names the Samsung HW-Q990F its best tested soundbar; for a mid-range surround package, it picks the JBL Bar 1000MK2; and for a compact standalone bar, it recommends the Sonos Beam (Gen 2). Buyers prioritizing immersive sound on a tighter budget can consider the Hisense AX5140Q, while the Hisense HS2100 is a simpler low-cost bar-and-subwoofer option. These are recommendations from separate review publishers, not results from one shared head-to-head test. Check regional availability and current prices before choosing.
Which soundbar should I buy for my budget?
Start with the system you actually want to fit into your room. A standalone bar takes up less space; a separate subwoofer adds low-frequency impact; and rear satellites can create a more convincing surround field, but need placement space. RTINGS’ 2026 guides name different picks for premium, mid-range, budget, and small-bar use, reflecting those trade-offs rather than a universal ranking. The table summarizes the candidates and the specific strengths and cautions reported by the cited reviewers.
| Use case | Model | Why consider it | Trade-off to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Premium full system | Samsung HW-Q990F | RTINGS names it its best soundbar tested in its 2026 overall guide. | The newer HW-Q990H adds features such as Sound Elevation. RTINGS says the Q990F can remain better value for buyers who do not need the newest features; compare current local prices and generations. |
| Mid-range surround system | JBL Bar 1000MK2 | RTINGS’ mid-range pick has detachable, battery-powered rear speakers. SoundGuys highlights its wireless subwoofer and Dolby Atmos and DTS:X support. | SoundGuys says the rear speakers could use more volume at maximum. The satellites and subwoofer also require room for placement. |
| Budget immersive package | Hisense AX5140Q | RTINGS’ budget pick is a 5.1.4-channel package with dedicated satellites and up-firing drivers. | RTINGS notes it lacks Wi-Fi and Spotify Connect; room correction is limited to use with a Hisense TV. |
| Low-cost bar with subwoofer | Hisense HS2100 | RTINGS describes it as a value option around the $100 price point, with a dedicated subwoofer, ARC and optical connections, and Dolby Digital and DTS playback. | It has no satellites, and RTINGS says treble can sound harsh at higher volumes. The approximate price is not a guaranteed current or regional price. |
| Compact standalone bar | Sonos Beam (Gen 2) | RTINGS calls it its best small soundbar and reports it is under 26 inches wide. What Hi-Fi? separately names it its best budget soundbar overall. | It supports Atmos but has no height drivers. Adding a subwoofer or speakers expands the system at added cost and with a larger footprint. |
RTINGS’ 2026 overall guide says it tested over 250 soundbars; its under-$500 guide says it tested over 245. Those figures describe that publisher’s test coverage, not the number of soundbars on the market. Its recommendations can change as reviews, availability, and prices change.

If you want a full system rather than just a bar, the Samsung HW-Q990F is RTINGS’ overall pick in its 2026 guide. Its position is a reviewer verdict, not a claim that it will suit every room or sound preference. RTINGS says the newer HW-Q990H offers features including Sound Elevation, while the Q990F may offer stronger value if those newer features are not important to you, particularly when discounts follow a successor’s release.

Compare the exact model generation and the full package price where you live. A premium surround system needs more placement space than a standalone bar, so consider the room and speaker layout alongside the headline price.
Best mid-range surround package: JBL Bar 1000MK2
The JBL Bar 1000MK2 is RTINGS’ mid-range choice. Its detachable, battery-powered rear speakers give you a way to add rear-channel sound without leaving those speakers permanently wired in place. SoundGuys also points to its wireless subwoofer and Dolby Atmos and DTS:X support, and describes setup as simpler than a traditional surround system.

SoundGuys notes that the rear speakers could use more volume at maximum. If you often listen loudly or need the rear channels to carry strongly across a large room, treat that observation as a reason to compare review details and your own priorities rather than assuming every surround system will behave the same.

Best budget immersive system: Hisense AX5140Q
RTINGS’ budget pick, the Hisense AX5140Q, is a 5.1.4-channel system with dedicated satellite speakers and up-firing drivers. Those physical speakers give it a different design from a compact bar that relies only on processing to suggest surround or height effects.

- HEAR YOUR TV BETTER: Designed with simplicity in mind, the Bose TV Speaker is an all-in-one soundbar that clarifies speech and is a simple fix for better TV sound
- WIDE, NATURAL SOUND: 2 angled full-range drivers deliver a more realistic, spatial audio experience for overall better TV sound from a small soundbar
- ENHANCED DIALOGUE: This sound bar for smart tv is designed to specifically focus on clarifying and elevating vocals and pronunciation
- BLUETOOTH TV SPEAKER: Pair your device to this Bluetooth soundbar to wirelessly stream your favorite music and podcasts. Connect up to 3 devices through the inputs (HDMI, Optical in, and AUX in); the first powered on device will automatically connect
- SIMPLE SETUP: A single connection from this compact soundbar to the TV via an optical audio cable (included) or an HDMI cable (sold separately) has you up and running in minutes
The feature compromises matter: RTINGS says the AX5140Q lacks Wi-Fi and Spotify Connect, and that its room correction is limited to use with a Hisense TV. Check whether those constraints fit your TV and music-listening habits before buying.
Best low-cost bar and subwoofer: Hisense HS2100
For a basic setup that adds a dedicated subwoofer without moving up to a satellite-speaker package, RTINGS describes the Hisense HS2100 as a value option around the $100 price point. That is the guide’s approximate price description, not a live quote; local price and stock can vary. RTINGS lists ARC and optical support, as well as Dolby Digital and DTS playback.

- Simplified 5.1ch Dolby Atmos Setup: Enjoy immersive 4D sound with real Dolby Atmos and 5.1-channel audio. Five built-in speakers, including two side-firing drivers, create wide surround without rear speakers. Precision DSP ensures <0.5 ms latency for smooth, theater-like sound. Setup takes less than 1 minute.
- Voice Clarity Enhancement: VoiceMX technology uses advanced DSP algorithms to isolate and enhance vocal frequencies in real time. Dialogue remains crisp and easy to follow by separating speech from background effects and music, even at low volumes or during intense scenes.
- 300W Output with 6-Driver System: Featuring five precision-tuned full-range drivers and a dedicated wired wooden subwoofer, the system delivers up to 300W of peak power for bold, room-filling sound. With a frequency response of 45 Hz–18 kHz and a maximum SPL of 99 dB, it reproduces everything from subtle nuances to explosive cinematic effects.
- 18 mm High-Excursion Driver: Powered by BassMX technology, the wired wooden subwoofer features a 18 mm high-excursion driver, a 5.3L tuned cabinet, and a high-density magnetic circuit. This design delivers deeper, tighter bass with greater air displacement and enhanced low-frequency performance—bringing more realism to every scene.
- HDMI eARC for True Dolby Atmos: HDMI eARC supports up to 37 Mbps of bandwidth, unlocking the full potential of lossless Dolby Atmos 5.1-channel audio. Compared to standard ARC, eARC delivers richer surround effects and greater detail. CEC integration allows the TV and soundbar to work together with unified control.
The HS2100 has no rear satellites, and RTINGS warns that its treble can sound harsh at higher volumes. It is therefore a simpler bar-plus-subwoofer choice, not a substitute for a dedicated surround package.

For a small setup where a separate subwoofer and rear speakers are not the starting point, RTINGS names the Sonos Beam (Gen 2) its best small soundbar and says it is under 26 inches wide. What Hi-Fi? independently names it its best budget soundbar overall. The two publications’ recommendations are useful corroboration, but their testing approaches are not a shared comparative ranking.

The Beam supports Dolby Atmos, but it has no height drivers. RTINGS says it can be expanded with a subwoofer and speakers; doing so adds cost and takes more space, so compare the complete system you may want rather than only the bar.
Is a Dolby Atmos soundbar worth it in a small room?
Atmos support alone does not tell you how convincing overhead effects will be. Crutchfield’s June 22, 2026 guide explains that the experience depends on processing and on the number and type of drivers. A bar can decode an Atmos signal without having dedicated up-firing drivers, and placement and setup also affect what you hear.
- Look at the speaker layout: dedicated up-firing drivers and rear satellites, as on the Hisense AX5140Q, provide physical channels that a standalone bar such as the Sonos Beam (Gen 2) does not have.
- Think about room and placement: separate satellites and a subwoofer need suitable space and positions; a compact bar is easier to fit but makes different compromises.
- Check the rest of your setup: confirm the connections and TV compatibility you need, as well as Wi-Fi or music-service features if they matter. Do not infer a port or feature from a model family name.
How to choose between a standalone bar, subwoofer, and satellites
Match the package to the benefit you care about most, and compare the cost and space of the full system rather than the bar alone.
- Choose a standalone bar when space and simpler placement matter most. The Beam (Gen 2) is the compact option in this guide, but Atmos support does not mean it has height drivers.
- Add a subwoofer when stronger bass is a priority and you can accommodate another component. The HS2100 is the low-cost bar-plus-subwoofer candidate discussed here.
- Choose satellites when dedicated rear channels and a more immersive surround layout matter more than a minimal footprint. The AX5140Q and JBL Bar 1000MK2 represent budget and mid-range options, respectively, with different feature sets.
- Compare the whole system price: optional or included speakers affect the real cost. Recheck current regional pricing and stock, since prices and reviewer picks can change.
Other higher-end Atmos systems to compare
Crutchfield’s June 22, 2026 guide covers several alternatives by different strengths, including immersive multi-speaker packages, music, convenience, smart features, 3D sound, and all-in-one designs. These are that retailer’s editorial categories, not controlled comparisons across every model.
