A soundbar can make TV and movie audio clearer and add surround or Dolby Atmos effects with less equipment and room clutter than a multi-speaker system. The right choice depends on more than its channel number: check whether it includes a subwoofer or rear speakers, how it creates height effects, which formats and connections it supports, and whether it fits your room and TV setup.

What a soundbar can—and cannot—do

A soundbar puts multiple speaker drivers in a single bar, often paired with a separate subwoofer and sometimes rear speakers. Compared with a conventional surround system, it is generally a simpler, less cluttered way to improve TV sound. The trade-off is that separate speakers can create greater physical separation and a more immersive surround field. What Hi-Fi?’s soundbar buying guide discusses that balance alongside features to compare.

Channel labels describe speaker roles, not a guarantee of how convincing surround effects will sound in your room. A configuration with more channels may include dedicated surround or height channels, but the package contents, speaker placement, supported formats, and room acoustics matter too. Check the product’s channel layout and what is actually included rather than choosing on the number alone.

How to choose a soundbar for your room and equipment

Check the complete speaker package

Find out whether the price covers only the bar or also a subwoofer and rear speakers. A subwoofer handles low-frequency sound; rear speakers can place effects behind the seating position more directly than a bar on its own. Some systems bundle these components, while others make them optional. Compare the total system you would use, not just the bar’s headline configuration.

ULTIMEA 5.1CH Surround Sound Bar System with Dolby Atmos, Poseidon M60
  • Simplified 5.1ch Dolby Atmos Setup: Enjoy immersive 4D sound with real Dolby Atmos and 5.1-channel audio. Five built-in speakers, including two side-firing drivers, create wide surround without rear speakers. Precision DSP ensures <0.5 ms latency for smooth, theater-like sound. Setup takes less than 1 minute.
  • Voice Clarity Enhancement: VoiceMX technology uses advanced DSP algorithms to isolate and enhance vocal frequencies in real time. Dialogue remains crisp and easy to follow by separating speech from background effects and music, even at low volumes or during intense scenes.
  • 300W Output with 6-Driver System: Featuring five precision-tuned full-range drivers and a dedicated wired wooden subwoofer, the system delivers up to 300W of peak power for bold, room-filling sound. With a frequency response of 45 Hz–18 kHz and a maximum SPL of 99 dB, it reproduces everything from subtle nuances to explosive cinematic effects.
  • 18 mm High-Excursion Driver: Powered by BassMX technology, the wired wooden subwoofer features a 18 mm high-excursion driver, a 5.3L tuned cabinet, and a high-density magnetic circuit. This design delivers deeper, tighter bass with greater air displacement and enhanced low-frequency performance—bringing more realism to every scene.
  • HDMI eARC for True Dolby Atmos: HDMI eARC supports up to 37 Mbps of bandwidth, unlocking the full potential of lossless Dolby Atmos 5.1-channel audio. Compared to standard ARC, eARC delivers richer surround effects and greater detail. CEC integration allows the TV and soundbar to work together with unified control.

Match the formats to your content

Look for support for the audio formats used by your films, games, streaming services, and playback devices. Dolby Atmos support is useful only when the entire playback chain can deliver Atmos: the content and service, the TV or connected player, and the soundbar all need to support it, with the correct audio track and settings enabled. Sony’s Atmos playback guidance explains the requirements for TV-streamed content.

Understand how Atmos height effects are produced

Some Atmos bars use upward-firing drivers to send sound toward the ceiling, which reflects it back toward listeners. These drivers need a clear path and a suitable reflective ceiling. Other bars use virtualization to simulate overhead sound from speakers aimed at the listener. Virtualization does not create the same physical reflection path, so the two approaches should not be treated as equivalent.

ULTIMEA 5.1.2ch Sound Bar with Dolby Atmos, Surround Sound System for TV
  • 5.1.2ch Surround Sound System: A 5.1.2-channel system featuring up-firing speakers, surround sound, and a powerful subwoofer creates lifelike, multidimensional audio. Feel the Sky Around You—raindrops falling from above, helicopters circling overhead, thunder rumbling in all directions. Sound isn’t just around you, it engulfs you, as if the ceiling disappeared. This is Dolby Atmos: not just heard, but felt.
  • Up-Firing Drivers with Neodymium Core: The up-firing channels use neodymium internal magnets and 18-core large voice coils to enhance height precision and vertical throw. This aerospace-grade configuration ensures better high-frequency dynamics, delivering focused and elevated sound images that unlock the true potential of Dolby Atmos.
  • 360° SurroundX Audio: SurroundX technology combines two rear surround speakers and dual up-firing Atmos drivers to build a true 360° sound field. Powered by intelligent spatial algorithms, the system precisely positions audio around and above you—enhancing Dolby Atmos with a more natural, three-dimensional soundstage. Note: Not compatible with DTS.
  • Lossless Audio Transmission: Unlock full Dolby Atmos performance with HDMI eARC, supporting up to 37Mbps bandwidth for lossless 5.1.2-channel audio. Compared to regular ARC, eARC delivers richer detail and better surround effects with no compression. With CEC, your TV and soundbar work as one—power, volume, and input sync automatically for effortless control.
  • Advanced App Control: Customize every detail of your audio experience with the Ultimea App. Fine-tune your surround sound with 13-step level adjustment (-6 to +6), optimize with a 10-band graphic EQ, and choose from 121 preset sound settings. Enjoy seamless OTA updates that unlock new features and keep your system performing at its peak.

Dolby describes a flat, reflective ceiling around 7.5–12 feet (2.3–3.66 m) as ideal for up-firing Atmos speakers. Its Atmos soundbar setup guide advises placing the bar at or slightly above seated ear level and keeping upward-firing drivers unobstructed—not inside a cabinet or beneath a soffit. If your room cannot meet those conditions, consider whether a virtualized design better suits the space, while recognizing that its effect is simulated.

Verify the TV connections and physical fit

Check the soundbar’s HDMI ARC or eARC connection, any HDMI inputs, and other useful options such as optical audio or Bluetooth. Confirm which devices you will connect and whether the TV supports the connection and audio formats you need. Also measure the bar’s width and height against the TV, stand, shelf, or cabinet; a bar that blocks the screen, remote sensor, or upward-firing drivers is a poor fit. Samsung’s soundbar selection guide covers channels, formats, fit, and connections.

As one example of the kinds of specifications to compare, the What Hi-Fi? guide lists the Hisense AX5125H with HDMI eARC, HDMI-in, optical, and Bluetooth connections, plus Dolby Atmos and DTS:X support. That listing is not a controlled comparison or a personal listening test, and does not establish current availability, regional package contents, or price. Verify the exact model and included components where you shop.

Connect the soundbar and confirm Atmos playback

  1. Connect the TV to the bar. Use the soundbar’s HDMI OUT eARC/ARC port and the TV’s HDMI IN eARC/ARC port, as Sony’s connection instructions describe. Use the specific ports labeled for ARC or eARC; an ordinary HDMI port may not provide the same audio-return function.
  2. Choose a path for other playback devices. Connect a player or console to the TV or, if appropriate for your equipment and signal path, to the soundbar’s HDMI IN. Follow both devices’ manuals to ensure the connection supports the formats you want to pass through.
  3. Set the TV’s audio output. Enable the relevant HDMI audio-return option and select an output or pass-through mode that supports the format. Exact labels and steps vary by TV and soundbar. Sony notes that TV-streamed Atmos also requires a compatible TV, an Atmos-capable service and title, Atmos enabled in the TV’s audio output, and selection of the Atmos audio track when a program offers multiple tracks.
  4. Confirm the content and track. Check the title’s audio details and choose its Atmos track if available. A service subscription alone does not make every title Atmos, and a compatible bar cannot add Atmos to a source that does not supply it.
  5. Check whether a cable is needed. Consult the manuals and the box contents before buying an HDMI cable. The appropriate cable depends on the devices and signal requirements; do not assume a particular cable is necessary or included.

Place the bar and subwoofer for your room

Keep the bar clear

Place the soundbar where its drivers have an unobstructed path to the seating area. For an up-firing Atmos model, avoid a shelf or cabinet that blocks the top drivers, and heed Dolby’s guidance on ear-level placement and ceiling clearance. If the TV stand forces the bar too low or too far forward, check the manufacturer’s placement instructions before settling on a position.

Find a useful subwoofer position

Start with the subwoofer near the soundbar and TV, then listen from your usual seat and try other positions. Bass changes with room placement: distance from walls can alter the response, and a cabinet can reduce bass or cause rattling and distortion. Dolby’s soundbar setup guide recommends experimenting in the individual room rather than relying on one universal placement.
