If you want stronger noise cancelling than the Sony WH-1000XM5, shortlist the Bose QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen). For tested long battery life and clear outdoor calls, consider the Sennheiser MOMENTUM 5 Wireless. The best fit depends on which trade-off matters most: the available reviews do not establish one current model as the across-the-board winner for ANC, comfort, and call quality.
Which WH-1000XM5 alternative should you choose?
| Your priority | Alternative to consider | What the cited evidence says | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Strongest noise cancelling | Bose QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen) | What Hi-Fi? says it narrowly beats the Sony WH-1000XM6 for outright sound-blocking intensity. Read What Hi-Fi?’s comparison. | This is a comparison with XM6, not a matched Gen 2-versus-XM5 test of comfort and calls. |
| Outdoor calls and long battery life | Sennheiser MOMENTUM 5 Wireless | What Hi-Fi? reports clear, natural speech and effective reduction of wind and traffic in an outdoor call test, plus 57 hours of ANC-on battery life at a reasonable listening volume. Read the MOMENTUM 5 review. | The reviewer says its ANC falls short of current Sony and Bose flagships. These review observations are not a standardized head-to-head comparison with XM5. |
| Apple device integration | AirPods Max 2 | Tom’s Guide lists 20 hours of battery life and identifies it as an Apple-focused option. See Tom’s Guide’s roundup. | Tom’s Guide says the ANC trails Bose and Sony, and the Android experience is limited. Its battery figure is not a controlled comparison with the Sennheiser test. |
| Stay with Sony | WH-1000XM6, discounted XM5, or WH-1000XM4C | What Hi-Fi? identifies XM6 as the newer premium Sony model and continues to recommend XM5 when discounted; a separate review discusses XM4C as a value option. See What Hi-Fi?’s Sony headphone guide and its XM4C review. | These models have distinct designs and fit. No single current price is established here, and retailer pricing and stock change. |
Best alternative for noise cancelling: Bose QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen)
The Bose QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen) are the clearest pick if your first concern is blocking outside sound. What Hi-Fi?’s current coverage says they narrowly surpass XM6 in outright ANC intensity, and Tom’s Guide also assesses their noise cancelling favorably. That makes Bose a strong alternative to investigate, but it does not prove that Gen 2 beats XM5 in every setting—or that it is more comfortable or better for calls.
Generation matters here. The direct comparison of XM5 and Bose comfort and microphone behavior available from RTINGS concerns the original QuietComfort Ultra, not Gen 2. Do not treat those results as measurements of the newer Bose model.
Comfort: use fit evidence carefully
Comfort depends on head shape, clamping force, ear size, glasses, and how long you wear a headset. In RTINGS’ comparison text, the reviewer found the original Bose QuietComfort Ultra more comfortable for long periods than XM5. The same page puts both headphones at about 250 g. Read the RTINGS comparison.

- PREMIUM NOISE CANCELLATION: Two processors control 8 microphones for unprecedented noise cancellation. With Auto NC Optimizer, noise canceling is automatically optimized based on your wearing conditions and environment.
- MAGNIFICENT SOUND: Engineered to perfection with the new Integrated Processor V1.
- CRYSTAL CLEAR HANDS-FREE CALLING: 4 beamforming microphones, precise voice pickup, and advanced audio signal processing.
- LONG BATTERY LIFE: Up to 30-hour battery life with quick charging (3 min charge for 3 hours of playback).
- ULTRA-COMFORTABLE: Lightweight design with soft fit leather.
That is useful context, not a universal fit verdict: the comparison is for the first-generation Bose Ultra, and a reviewer’s long-wear impression cannot establish that the fit will suit every listener. The available sources do not establish a matched long-wear comfort comparison between XM5 and Bose Ultra Gen 2.
Call quality: choose for your environment
Wind, traffic, and outdoor speech
What Hi-Fi?’s MOMENTUM 5 review reports clear, natural voices and effective reduction of wind and traffic during an outdoor call test. This is a favorable practical observation for people who take calls outside, though it is not a standardized comparison against XM5.

Noisy versus quiet rooms
In RTINGS’ comparison of XM5 and the original Bose QuietComfort Ultra, the comparison text favors Sony for microphone performance in noisy conditions and Bose in quiet conditions. These findings apply to those tested generations and conditions; they do not settle how the newer Bose Gen 2 compares with XM5 or with the MOMENTUM 5.

The MOMENTUM 5 review reports 57 hours with ANC on at a reasonable listening volume. Tom’s Guide lists 20 hours for AirPods Max 2. Those figures come from different outlets and methods, so they are useful as product-specific reported figures rather than a controlled battery contest. AirPods Max 2 makes most sense to consider if Apple-device integration is important to you. Tom’s Guide notes that the Android experience is limited and that its ANC does not match Bose or Sony in its assessment. The cited roundup does not provide a matched comfort or call-quality comparison against XM5, so ecosystem fit alone should not be mistaken for an across-the-board performance win.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to make the decision
- Rank your main need. For ANC intensity, start with Bose Ultra Gen 2; for the cited outdoor-call observations and long ANC-on battery figure, examine MOMENTUM 5; for Apple integration, consider AirPods Max 2.
- Check generation and test conditions. The Bose comfort and microphone comparison is for the original Ultra, while the ANC-led recommendation concerns Gen 2. The cited battery figures and call observations were not produced in one shared test.
- Try the fit if possible. A comfort impression from one review is not a guarantee for your head, ears, or glasses.
- Compare Sony options if you prefer its workflow. XM6 is the newer premium model; XM5 may be appealing when discounted, and XM4C is another value-oriented model discussed by What Hi-Fi?. Check current local availability and pricing before buying.
No cited source provides an apples-to-apples numerical score for ANC, comfort, and calls across all these current alternatives. Treat the recommendations as priority-based shortlists, not a single overall ranking.
