Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars is the clearest fit if you want a satisfying SNES role-playing game without committing to a long campaign. Nintendo Life estimates a first-time playthrough of the original SNES version at about 15–17 hours. For other notable SNES RPGs, the available sources do not establish comparable playtimes, so choose by combat style and setting rather than assuming they meet a particular hour limit.

How the recommendations compare

Game Estimated main-story time Combat and appeal Version or access note
Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars About 15–17 hours for a first-time original-SNES playthrough, an editorial estimate from Nintendo Life. Nintendo Life separately estimates about 10–12 hours for the Switch remake’s main story; GamesRadar+ gives the Switch version an editorial estimate of 12–15 hours (April 25, 2026). Turn-based battles, with timed button inputs that add an active element. The Switch release is a 2023 remake, not the original SNES game. Nintendo says its Breezy difficulty makes battles easier and leveling faster.
EarthBound Not stated in the cited sources. Turn-based RPG with a near-normal modern setting made strange by unusual enemies and events. Nintendo Life’s February 9, 2024 roundup listed it on Nintendo Switch Online; that dated note does not establish current or regional catalog availability.
Secret of Mana Not stated in the cited sources. Action RPG; its story can be played cooperatively with a friend, unlike a conventional turn-based campaign. The cited source describes the SNES RPG, but does not establish current availability.
Final Fantasy IV (released in North America on SNES as Final Fantasy II) Not stated in the cited sources. A Reddit commenter included it in a roughly 20–25-hour discussion, which is anecdotal rather than a measured estimate. Conventional turn-based RPG option. Use the regional title carefully: the North American SNES release was titled Final Fantasy II.

Why Super Mario RPG is the safest short-adventure pick

It is the only game in this comparison for which the cited sources provide a specific estimate for an original-SNES playthrough. Nintendo Life characterizes it as one of the shortest RPGs on the original system and estimates about 15–17 hours for a first-time run. Treat that as a guide, not a promised completion time: pace, familiarity, and optional content can change how long a playthrough takes.

Keep the remake’s timing separate. Nintendo Life estimates the Switch version’s main story at about 10–12 hours and says its challenges and secrets can be completed in under 20 hours, including its short post-game. GamesRadar+ lists a different editorial estimate—12–15 hours—for the Switch version in its April 25, 2026 short-RPG roundup. Those estimates use different descriptions of scope; they should not be collapsed into a single precise figure or applied to the SNES cartridge.

Turn-based battles with a bit of timing

Super Mario RPG is a strong match for someone who wants turn-based combat rather than a real-time action system. Its timed inputs make battles more interactive without changing the basic turn-based structure.

#1 Best Overall
Super Mario RPG - Nintendo Switch (International Version)
  • Jump through a colorful world and give attacks some extra oomph in battle!
  • Explore the vibrant environments with your party and jump towards your next goal!
  • Run into monsters to enter turn-based battles with your party of three.
  • Press the button at the right time for a satisfying dose of extra damage or helpful guard.

Switch remake is a distinct option

Nintendo’s official product page identifies the Switch edition as a Nintendo Switch game released November 17, 2023, and lists a physical edition. That edition is the remake, not an original SNES cartridge. Nintendo also says players new to RPGs or seeking a story-focused experience can use Breezy difficulty, which makes battles easier and leveling faster. The feature is stated for the Switch remake; it should not be assumed to exist in the original SNES version.

Choose another game if its style matters more than a verified runtime

EarthBound for an offbeat modern setting

EarthBound is the pick here for a world that starts near ordinary life and then becomes increasingly odd through its enemies and events. It remains turn-based, so it may suit players who want a traditional battle structure with an unusual tone. The available sources do not provide a comparable completion-time estimate, so it is not a substantiated alternative for a strict 20–25-hour limit.

Nintendo Life’s February 9, 2024 roundup noted Nintendo Switch Online availability. Because that note is dated and catalog access can vary by region and change over time, check the current Nintendo Switch Online catalog for your region before relying on it.

Secret of Mana for cooperative action combat

Secret of Mana offers a different kind of adventure: Nintendo Life notes that its story can be played through with a friend. Its action-RPG combat makes it a weaker fit if turn-based battles are a firm requirement, but a better one if cooperative play is the priority. No comparable runtime estimate is established in the cited sources.

Final Fantasy IV for a conventional turn-based alternative

Final Fantasy IV is a reasonable option if you want a more conventional turn-based SNES RPG. In North America, it was released on SNES under the title Final Fantasy II. A Reddit discussion about 20–25-hour RPGs includes a commenter’s estimate in that general range, but one informal comment is not enough to promise that duration. Choose it for the format and style, not as a guaranteed short campaign.

How to choose based on your time limit

  • You want the best-supported short SNES campaign: start with the original Super Mario RPG and use Nintendo Life’s approximate 15–17-hour estimate as a planning guide.
  • You are open to a remake and want a story-focused mode: consider the Switch version, keeping its distinct estimates and Breezy difficulty in mind.
  • You want an unusual setting: consider EarthBound, but do not treat its runtime as established by the cited sources.
  • You want to play with a friend: consider Secret of Mana, understanding that its action combat differs from turn-based RPGs.
  • You want another traditional turn-based game: consider Final Fantasy IV, but regard the roughly 20–25-hour Reddit comment as anecdotal, not a dependable completion estimate.

A request for a “good 20–25 hour RPG” that avoids an “egregious” time commitment captures the real trade-off: a game can feel substantial without requiring an open-ended commitment. That phrasing comes from one Reddit r/JRPG discussion, not audience-wide research. Of these picks, only Super Mario RPG has a supported original-SNES runtime estimate in the cited material; for the others, the safest choice is to prioritize the combat and setting you want rather than count on a particular number of hours.
