If you want one watch for training and hiking, the Garmin Forerunner 965 is the training-oriented option to consider; the Garmin fēnix 8 is positioned as a more outdoor-focused multisport choice. Both lines list built-in maps and multi-band GPS, but their battery claims apply to specific modes and configurations. The available evidence supports this focused Garmin shortlist—not a fair ranking across Garmin, Suunto, COROS, Polar, and other brands.

Which watch fits your training and hiking priorities?

Watch Best fit Relevant features and qualifications
Garmin Forerunner 965 Training-first use, including running and triathlon, with hiking as one of several outdoor activities Garmin lists training readiness, built-in maps, multi-band GPS, hiking activity support, an AMOLED display, and a 5 ATM water rating. Garmin describes it as a running and triathlon GPS smartwatch. Garmin’s athlete watch comparison and its Forerunner 965 product page provide the specifications.
Garmin fēnix 8 series Outdoor-oriented multisport use, especially if a higher water rating is a priority Garmin lists built-in maps, multi-band GPS, and a 10 ATM rating for selected fēnix 8 models. The series has multiple variants, so check the exact model rather than assuming every specification applies across the range. Garmin’s comparison page lists the series features.
Garmin fēnix 8 47 mm solar Buyers considering that specific solar-equipped model and its stated battery modes Garmin’s Malaysia product page lists model- and mode-specific battery estimates; they should not be generalized to other fēnix 8 sizes or configurations. See the 47 mm solar product page.

These are two different ways to prioritize the same mix of activities, not a universal winner-versus-runner-up verdict. Choose according to the training insights you will use, the routes you follow, the GPS mode and duration you need, and the watch’s display, size, and water rating.

How long do their batteries last in GPS use?

Forerunner 965

Garmin Singapore lists up to 23 days in smartwatch mode and up to 31 hours in GPS-only mode for the Forerunner 965. These are manufacturer estimates, not independent test results. Garmin’s owner manual says actual battery life depends on enabled features, including GPS, activity tracking, and connected sensors. Do not assume the 31-hour GPS-only estimate applies to every GPS configuration or to use with music.

fēnix 8 47 mm solar

For the specific 47 mm solar fēnix 8, Garmin Malaysia lists up to 21 days in smartwatch mode, or up to 28 days with solar, and up to 132 hours in Max Battery GPS mode, or up to 283 hours with solar. These are manufacturer estimates for that size, solar configuration, and named GPS mode; they are not comparable to the Forerunner’s GPS-only figure as though both watches were tested under identical settings.

GPS settings, connected sensors, activity tracking, music, and solar conditions can all affect the relevance of a headline maximum; confirm the estimate for the exact variant and mode before relying on it for an itinerary.

What should you check before choosing?

  • Training: Garmin lists training readiness for the Forerunner 965 and advanced training features among the compared watches. Decide which training and recovery information you will actually use.
  • Navigation: Both cited lines list built-in maps and multi-band GPS. The available specifications do not independently establish map detail, GPS accuracy, or route-following quality, so those should not be treated as proven advantages.
  • Display and wear: The Forerunner 965 product page specifies AMOLED and 5 ATM. Garmin’s comparison lists 10 ATM for selected fēnix 8 models. Check the exact model’s dimensions and display type against your preferences.
  • Exact configuration: The fēnix 8 is a series, and the cited long battery estimates belong to its 47 mm solar model. Do not transfer those numbers to another size or version.

What does a hiking field report tell you?

A TechRadar reviewer describes using the fēnix 8 on an 11-day Everest Base Camp trek and a five-day Cumbria Way hike, and discusses its maps and activity features in a 2026 review. That account offers one reviewer’s experience on those trips; it does not establish typical battery life or performance for all hikers.

Why this is a limited shortlist, not a market-wide ranking

The cited official specifications are strongest for selected Garmin watches, while the field account is one reviewer’s report. They do not provide a balanced, current comparison of Garmin against Suunto, COROS, Polar, or other brands. If you are comparing across brands, check each candidate’s official specifications for the same GPS mode, display, configuration, and activity features rather than treating these Garmin examples as proof of an overall best watch.
