For the closest iPhone integration, start with Apple Watch: Series 12 is in Apple’s current lineup, while SE 3 is the lower-cost option and Ultra 4 is the premium/outdoor tier. If you want a best Apple Watch alternative, Garmin Venu X1 is the clearest fitness-first choice in the current buying guides, with iOS compatibility, maps and training tools—but it does not replicate Apple’s ecosystem. Your iPhone and iOS version matter too: the latest Apple models have newer requirements than some models still recommended in buying guides.
Best smartwatch for iPhone: which one should you choose?
| Watch | Best for | iPhone compatibility | Battery claim in the cited guide |
|---|---|---|---|
| Apple Watch Series 12 | Closest fit with Apple services and apps | iPhone 11 or later with iOS 27 or later, according to Apple’s compatibility table | Not stated in the cited sources |
| Apple Watch SE 3 | A lower-cost Apple Watch | iPhone 11 or later with iOS 26 or later, according to Apple’s compatibility table | Not stated in the cited sources |
| Garmin Venu X1 | Fitness, training features and maps in a non-Apple watch | TechRadar lists iOS compatibility | Up to nine days without always-on display, as reported by TechRadar |
| Garmin Venu 3 | A Garmin alternative with wellness features | Wareable presents it as an Apple Watch Series alternative | 10–14 days for the 45 mm model, as reported by Wareable |
| Apple Watch Ultra 4 | Premium/outdoor Apple Watch tier | iPhone 11 or later with iOS 27 or later, according to Apple’s compatibility table | Not stated in the cited sources |
The battery figures above come from separate publisher guides, not a shared test. They are not a controlled head-to-head comparison; display settings and use affect battery life. Apple model compatibility comes from Apple’s compatibility table; the Venu X1 details are reported by TechRadar, and Venu 3 details by Wareable.
Choose Apple Watch if iPhone integration matters most
Apple Watch is the natural starting point if you want a watch designed to work within the Apple ecosystem. Apple’s current compatibility table includes Series 12, Series 11, SE 3, Ultra 4 and Ultra 3. Series 12 is therefore the current-generation pick among the named models here; do not treat an older buying-guide ranking as proof that Series 11 is the newest model.
Choose Garmin if fitness features and less frequent charging matter more
Garmin Venu X1 is a strong best Apple Watch alternative for people who want fitness and training features, maps and a longer stated battery estimate. It works with iOS, but its interaction with an iPhone differs from Apple Watch’s closer integration. Its guide-reported battery claim is up to nine days without always-on display; TechRadar also notes lower battery life when always-on display is enabled and calls out minimal buttons and navigation frustrations.

Which Apple Watch works with your iPhone?
Check the watch’s minimum phone and software requirement before buying. Apple’s compatibility table, accessed October 7, 2026, gives these requirements:
- Series 12 and Ultra 4: iPhone 11 or later with iOS 27 or later.
- Series 11, SE 3 and Ultra 3: iPhone 11 or later with iOS 26 or later.
Apple says watchOS 27 became available on September 14, 2026, for Series 9 or later, SE 3, and Ultra 2 or later. Apple also says installation requires iPhone 11 or later, or iPhone SE 3, with iOS 27. These are separate compatibility details: confirm the exact watch and phone combination before purchase. Apple cautions that not all features are available on all devices or in all regions; see its watchOS 27 announcement.

Best Apple Watch alternative: Garmin Venu X1 or Venu 3?
Garmin Venu X1: fitness-first with maps
TechRadar names the Garmin Venu X1 its best Garmin smartwatch for iPhone and lists iOS compatibility, maps, and fitness and training features. Its guide reports up to nine days of battery life without always-on display. That is a publisher-reported estimate, not a result from a shared test with Apple Watch models. The same guide notes that always-on display reduces battery life and flags minimal buttons and navigation as drawbacks. Choose it if those fitness-oriented tools and less frequent charging outweigh having Apple’s tighter ecosystem integration.

Garmin Venu 3: a separate comparison option
Wareable presents Garmin Venu 3 as an Apple Watch Series alternative and reports sleep and wellness features. Its page gives a 10–14 day battery estimate for the 45 mm model and listed a $449.99 price when crawled on October 7, 2026. That price is not a confirmed current offer, and its battery estimate should not be compared directly with the Venu X1 figure as if both were measured under identical conditions.

How to interpret Apple Watch buying-guide rankings
TechRadar’s buying guide ranks Series 11 as its overall pick, while its current coverage also includes Series 12. Apple’s compatibility table lists Series 12 as a current model. These are different kinds of evidence: a guide’s recommendation does not establish which model is newest. Treat Series 11 as a guide recommendation, not the current-generation pick, and check current independent reviews and model-specific features before deciding whether Series 12 is worth the difference for you.
