For US and Canadian homes, the Google Nest Learning Thermostat (4th gen) is a strong place to start if you want an adaptive heating schedule, Matter support and a room sensor in the box. It is not a universal best: check your HVAC system and wiring first, then choose based on how you want to monitor rooms and which smart-home platform you use.

Check HVAC compatibility before you buy
Thermostats are not interchangeable simply because they connect to Wi-Fi. The Nest Learning Thermostat (4th gen) is documented for most 24V systems, including a range of heating, cooling, heat-pump, fan, humidifier, dehumidifier and ventilation configurations. Equipment stages, accessory wiring and power needs can still make a particular installation incompatible. Check the Google compatibility checker against your exact system, or ask an installer if you have unusual equipment.
Google says most installations do not need a C wire, but its technical guidance identifies limited cases where a C wire or Nest Power Connector is necessary—less than 1% of installations, according to Google. Treat that as a product-specific figure, not a rule for other thermostat brands. See Google’s technical specifications and wiring guidance.

Use room sensors to spot uneven temperatures
A thermostat’s built-in reading reflects the area around the thermostat, which may not match a bedroom or another room that runs hotter or colder. Remote sensors let compatible systems take additional room temperatures into account, helping you monitor those differences and prioritize comfort where it matters.

The Nest Learning Thermostat (4th gen) includes one Nest Temperature Sensor (2nd gen) and supports up to six; additional sensors are optional. Google requires the Google Home app for initial setup, even though the thermostat is Matter-certified. See the Nest product details.
Choose by platform, scheduling and ongoing features
- Choose Nest if you want learning schedules, room sensing and Matter support, and are comfortable setting it up in Google Home.
- Choose ecobee Premium if its included SmartSensor and listed Apple Home, Alexa, Google Assistant or SmartThings integrations fit your household. Some security functions require a subscription, according to ecobee’s product comparison.
- Consider ecobee Essential or Amazon Smart Thermostat for budget-oriented options, but verify current availability, exact compatibility and what features depend on an app, platform or subscription before purchase.
Read energy-savings claims in context
Smart scheduling may reduce heating or cooling use when it avoids maintaining an unnecessarily fixed temperature, but published percentages are not directly comparable. Google says independent UK studies found Nest Thermostats combined with Seasonal Savings saved the average user 10% on heating bills over the winter season. That statement is specific to the UK, Nest and Seasonal Savings; it is not a promise for every home or a comparison across brands. Google also says heating and cooling account for about half of energy use in the average home in the US and Canada, attributing the figure to the US Department of Energy. ecobee says an internal analysis of North American customers conducted in April 2021 found up to 26% heating and cooling cost savings compared with holding 72°F/22°C. Its cited estimate of up to $284 USD or $388 CAD in annual savings is a manufacturer calculation based on average heating and cooling energy costs and that savings figure. ecobee says results vary with energy use and location; these are not independently measured universal outcomes. The figures appear in ecobee’s thermostat comparison.

Check local rebates and regional availability
Rebates depend on the utility, location, qualifying product and offer dates. For example, a 2026 PSEG Long Island document lists eligible ENERGY STAR smart thermostats for a rebate of up to $100; that offer does not establish eligibility elsewhere or guarantee that a particular model qualifies. Check the current terms with your utility before buying. The PSEG Long Island eligibility document is specific to that provider.

TechRadar reports that the Nest Learning Thermostat (4th gen) is available only in the US and Canada and that Google announced in April 2025 it would not sell this or future Nest thermostats in Europe.
