Smart plugs add schedules and remote switching to compatible plug-in devices, such as lamps. Choose one that supports the smart-home platform you already use, then check outlet clearance and electrical ratings. The TP-Link Tapo P125M is a compact indoor option with broad platform support; the D-Link PM-01M is an example with energy monitoring; and outdoor use calls for a plug designed for that environment.
What a smart plug can—and cannot—automate
A smart plug sits between a wall outlet and a compatible device. It can switch power on or off remotely and run schedules or routines. A lamp is a straightforward use: schedule it to turn on at a set time, or switch it remotely through the compatible app or voice assistant.
A plug controls power to the connected device; it does not add smart features to the device itself. Check that the appliance is suitable for being switched this way and follow both products’ instructions. Scheduling or tracking consumption does not guarantee lower energy use.
How to choose a plug for your home
Start with your existing platform
Check the exact plug model against the platform you already use, such as Alexa, Google Home, Apple Home, or SmartThings. Compatibility varies by model. Matter support can broaden compatibility, but it does not establish that every feature will work identically in every controller. Confirm which functions the manufacturer supports for your intended setup.

Check fit and electrical limits
Compare the plug’s body size with the space around your outlet. A bulky plug can obstruct an adjacent socket, so compact dimensions and clearance matter, especially at a crowded outlet. Also match the plug’s stated voltage and current capacity to the connected load; do not assume that two products with similar software features have the same electrical rating.
Decide which controls and reporting you need
Look for schedules, timers, routines, or vacation mode if those are the automations you plan to use. Energy monitoring is model-specific: some plugs report consumption and others do not. Treat monitoring as information, not as a promise of savings.

Choose indoor or outdoor protection
Use an outdoor-rated plug for an outdoor location, and check its environmental protection and operating limits. An indoor plug should not be treated as weather-resistant simply because it supports remote control or Matter.

- Outdoor control: The Tapo outdoor plug is described as having two outlets and IP65 resistance. Verify its current manual and operating limits before connecting outdoor equipment.

Before you buy and set it up
- Identify the device and load. Check the appliance instructions and the plug’s voltage and current limits. Do not connect a load that exceeds the plug’s rating.
- Confirm the precise model. Match the model and regional version to your outlet, electrical supply, and chosen smart-home platform.
- Check the physical location. Make sure the plug fits without blocking an outlet you need. For outdoor placement, verify the plug’s environmental rating and the manufacturer’s installation guidance.
- Verify setup requirements. Confirm whether the model connects directly or requires a bridge, and check which app, controller, and automation features are supported.
- Set a practical schedule and test it. Use the manufacturer’s app or compatible controller to create the routine, then confirm the connected device responds as intended. Do not rely on an automation until you have checked its behavior in your own setup.
