Smart spot sensors detect water where you place them and send an alert; most cannot stop the leak. For automatic shutoff, you need a separate whole-home monitor and in-line valve, a more involved system that may require a plumber. The five options below suit different placements and smart-home setups, but confirm the exact model, compatibility, and availability in your area before buying.
How to choose a smart flood sensor
Start with the likely leak location and what you expect the device to do. A puck detects water at its contacts; a probe reaches a particular spot; and a sensing cable may detect water along its length or only at an endpoint. Those differences matter more than a headline range when a sensor must fit behind an appliance or under a sink.
- Detection: Confirm whether the contacts, probe, or entire cable need to touch water.
- Alerts: Check for a local alarm as well as app notifications, and find out whether remote alerts require a hub, internet connection, or account.
- Power: Batteries allow placement away from an outlet but need eventual replacement. Plug-in hubs still need a suitable outlet.
- Smart-home features: Treat Alexa, Google Home, Apple Home, Matter, and temperature or humidity monitoring as model-specific features, not standard inclusions.
- Mitigation: A spot sensor usually alerts you; it does not close the water supply. If you need automatic shutoff, assess a compatible whole-home system separately.
Five smart flood sensors to consider
This is a needs-based shortlist, not a ranking from comparative hands-on testing. Specifications below are attributed to Tom’s Guide’s product coverage or, for YoLink’s sensor formats, to the manufacturer’s 2023 guide. Product configurations and availability can change.
Moen Smart Water Leak Detector: app alerts and environmental monitoring
Moen describes this as a standalone sensor that can alert to moisture, extreme temperatures, and high humidity. Its listed alert channels include the Moen Smart Water App, text, phone call, and email. Moen also says it can connect to the Flo Smart Water Monitor and Shutoff; the sensor itself does not shut off water. See Moen’s product information.

Perfect for the basement, kitchen, or vacation home!
- Feature-Rich App: Receive instant push notifications. Use the “Find Device” feature to quickly trigger audible beeps to retrieve misplaced sensors. Add multiple email addresses through the APP, and your family and friends can also receive reminders when there is a water leak at home.
- Industry Leading IP67 Waterproof: Its IP67 waterproof rating ensures durability against spills, humidity, and accidental submersion. It can be used multiple times after wiping dry.
- Four-level volume adjustment: Customize your own alarm to fit your life! Use the app to adjust the volume in 4 levels, with a maximum alarm volume of 105 decibels. Whether it's day or night, whether it's in the bedroom or the basement, you can find the right volume.
Tom’s Guide reports that the reviewed model uses Wi-Fi and a CR123A battery, supports Alexa, monitors temperature and humidity, and has a 51 dB alarm. Its included four-foot cable senses water at the endpoint disk rather than along its entire length; the guide reports extensions up to 18 feet. Check the current listing to confirm the configuration and cable limits.
First Alert L1: cable sensing for a longer run
Tom’s Guide describes the L1 as a Wi-Fi detector with a five-foot cable option that detects water along the cable. The guide reports that compatible cable can extend coverage up to 500 feet, and that the device provides temperature and humidity readings. That reported maximum is model-specific, not a promise that every bundle includes that much cable.

Tom’s Guide describes Klippbok as a budget sensor powered by two AAA batteries, with Matter connectivity and listed compatibility with Alexa, Google Home, Apple Home, and SmartThings. It reports a 65 dB alarm. The device has no monitoring cable or temperature sensor, so it is best suited to a location where water can reach the sensor directly.

- Complete plug-and-play kit: hub plus Leak Sensor 1 units for whole-home coverage at toilets, sinks, water heaters, laundry, dishwashers, and sump areas.
- Long-range LoRa: reliable coverage where Wi-Fi struggles (up to 2,034 feet open air); get app, email, and SMS/text alerts and name sensors by location.
- Works even without internet: with YoLink Control-D2D, sensors can directly trigger YoLink sirens or shutoff valves for local protection during outages.
- Silent design: Leak Sensor 1 has no built-in siren; add SpeakerHub or a YoLink siren for audible or spoken alerts if desired.
- Scalable IoT platform: one hub supports 300+ YoLink devices; part of a whole smart home/building ecosystem; hub options include standard Hub, SpeakerHub, and Cellular Hub.
Platform support and availability can vary by market and product revision; verify them with your local IKEA listing and smart-home setup.
D-Link Wi-Fi Water Leak Sensor and Alarm Starter Kit: hub with expandable pods
Tom’s Guide describes a kit with a plug-in hub, an included sensing cable, and support for up to 16 remote sensor pods. It reports that pods can be placed up to 900 feet from the hub and that the system works with Alexa and Google Assistant. The same guide says it does not report temperature or humidity and has no D-Link shutoff valve.

YoLink Water Leak Sensor: choose a puck, rope, or probe format
YoLink’s 2023 buyer guide describes several sensor shapes for different placements: Sensor 1 is a puck for drips or pooled water; Sensor 2 uses a rope-style sensing cable suited to appliances or a defined boundary; and Sensor 3 uses a probe for a more precise location, such as a drain. Choose by where water is likely to appear, and check the exact model’s sensing behavior and cable or probe compatibility.

The guide says the sensors require a YoLink hub connected to the internet for full app functionality. It states that Sensor 1 has a five-year battery-change interval; that is a manufacturer claim for that model, not a verified interval for every YoLink sensor. The 2023 guide is useful for format distinctions, not current prices or lineup status. Read YoLink’s sensor-format guide.

Put a sensor close to the likely leak source, where water will reach it early without blocking routine access. Common locations include the base of a water heater, toilet, sink drain, washing machine, or dishwasher. A sensor hidden too far from the appliance may alert only after water has spread.
- Under a sink or beside a toilet: A puck works if it can sit at the low point where water collects. A probe may be useful when the likely leak point is hard to reach.
- Behind a washing machine or dishwasher: Check whether the cable detects water along its full run or only at a sensor at the end. A rope sensor can suit a boundary, while a short endpoint cable may not provide continuous coverage.
- Near a drain: A probe-style sensor can reach a precise spot, provided the product is designed for that placement.
- Across a broad floor area: Confirm cable sensing geometry and expansion options rather than assuming every included cable detects water everywhere along its length.
When a spot sensor is not enough
A spot sensor sends an alert that someone must respond to. If a leak could cause serious damage while you are away, consider whether a whole-home water monitor with an in-line shutoff valve is more appropriate. That is a distinct product category: it can monitor flow and, depending on the system, close the supply automatically. Installation may require a plumber, and compatibility with the home’s plumbing line must be checked for the specific unit.
Moen says its detector can connect to the Flo Smart Water Monitor and Shutoff, but that does not turn the standalone detector into a shutoff valve. Treat the sensor and valve as separate components and verify their compatibility and installation requirements.
Verify these details before buying
- Confirm the exact model and local availability; the cited product coverage does not establish live stock or current prices.
- Check whether the package includes a hub, sensing cable, probes, batteries, or only the sensor.
- Verify the app, smart-home platform, and internet requirements for the precise product revision.
- For add-on cables or pods, confirm compatibility with that model rather than relying on a similar product name.
- If considering automatic shutoff, check plumbing compatibility and installation requirements for the valve system itself.
