The best short microphone stand depends on where the mic needs to sit. For a kick drum, amp, or another near-floor source, the K&M 25950 is an extra-low freestanding boom. For a desktop, the K&M 25995 provides a compact flat base, while the Gator SH-BROADCAST2 clamps to or mounts through a desk and reaches up to 33 inches. Match the mounting style, reach, and thread to your setup rather than choosing by the word “short” alone.

Choose by where the microphone needs to go

For a kick drum, amp, or low floor position: K&M 25950

The K&M 25950 is the most directly matched of these options when the microphone must sit close to the floor. KMR Audio lists a 280 mm height and a two-piece telescoping boom adjustable from 425 to 725 mm. Its short, heavy folding legs and zinc die-cast base make it a freestanding choice rather than a desk attachment. KMR lists a 2.98 kg weight and a 3/8-inch threaded connector. Check the actual mic position and thread fit before ordering; the listed height alone does not establish the reach or clearance of every setup. [KMR Audio]

For a table or low floor placement with no clamp: K&M 25995

The K&M 25995 uses a flat steel plate base measuring 7.87 by 7.87 inches, with four elastic rubber feet. The US manufacturer data sheet specifies an adjustable height of 11.22 to 15.75 inches, a 12.20-inch boom, and a 5/8-inch connector. K&M describes it for broadcast or conference tables and as a floor stand for amplifiers. Allow space for its base and compare the stand’s range with the height your mic position requires. For a desk-mounted arm: Gator SH-BROADCAST2

The Gator SH-BROADCAST2 is a steel arm that Shure describes as designed to stay below the shoulder line. It can clamp to a surface up to 2.17 inches (55 mm) thick or use a direct-drill mount. Shure lists up to 33 inches (838 mm) of extension, 360-degree horizontal rotation, 90-degree upper vertical adjustment, and a maximum capacity of 4.4 lb (2 kg). The page identifies the threaded extension as useful with Shure SM7 and MV7 series microphones and states compatibility with Shure and third-party microphones. Confirm the desk edge, chosen mounting method, mic weight, and thread fit. Shure also documents cable channels and lists a three-inch extender for SM7B/SM7dB microphones; check the exact product listing for what is included. [Shure SH-BROADCAST2]

For a desk arm with a stated Shure fit: Gator SH-BROADCAST1

Shure lists the SH-BROADCAST1 with a clamp for surfaces up to 2.17 inches (55 mm), 360-degree rotation, and up to 32.25 inches (940 mm) of extension. Check reach, stability, and fit before buying

  1. Measure the target position. Record the required height from the floor or desktop and the horizontal distance from the stand’s base or mounting point. Compare both with the published stand and boom ranges; height alone does not tell you whether the mic can reach around a drum or amp.
  2. Choose a mounting method and make room for it. A clamp arm needs a suitable desk edge and clamp area; the SH-BROADCAST2 also offers direct-drill mounting. A freestanding model avoids attaching to furniture but occupies floor or tabletop space. The K&M 25995 base is 7.87 by 7.87 inches. [Shure SH-BROADCAST2] [K&M 25995 data sheet]
  3. Match the microphone’s load and boom extension. Shure publishes a 2 kg capacity for the SH-BROADCAST2. For the other listed models, the cited product specifications do not state a load rating. A longer boom extension can affect stand stability by shifting the load; do not assume a stand supports a heavy microphone without a relevant rating or manufacturer compatibility statement. [Shure SH-BROADCAST2] [MusicRadar buying guide]
  4. Check threads and accessories. The K&M 25950 lists a 3/8-inch connector, while the K&M 25995 lists a 5/8-inch connector. Confirm that the microphone or clip fits, and verify the exact model’s included accessories and regional listing. Do not assume a mic or clip comes with a stand.
  5. Plan the cable path and clearance. Shure documents cable channels on both Gator arms. Check that the arm, cable, and mic do not obstruct the desk, screen, or nearby equipment in the intended position. [Shure SH-BROADCAST1] [Shure SH-BROADCAST2]

What a short stand can—and cannot—change

A stand can help hold a microphone in a repeatable position. The published specifications cited here establish dimensions, mounting features, and stated compatibility; they do not show that one stand improves sound quality or that any model sounds better than another. Choose the stand to place the microphone where the recording requires it, and assess audio quality separately.
