The best shelves for a nursery make everyday items easy to find without turning the room into a climbing hazard. A considered setup might combine a wall shelf or book ledge for display and books with low, open baskets or canvas bins for toys. Choose based on your room, wall type, storage needs, and who needs to reach each item; secure applicable furniture according to its instructions.
Choose a shelf format that fits the nursery
There is no single best shelf for every baby room. Compare the available space, what you plan to store, how the wall or floor can support the unit, and whether the child will eventually be able to reach it. Check the selected product’s current instructions and listing for dimensions, intended load, mounting hardware, and installation requirements; those details vary by product.

Build a practical nursery organization system
Separate display storage from everyday toy storage
Use shelves or a book ledge for the items you want visible, and open storage for toys that need to be put away often. Health Canada recommends open storage such as baskets or canvas bins and advises removing toy-bin lids. Open bins make it easier to see and retrieve contents without adding a lid to manage.

Keep the setup flexible as your baby grows
Think about what the child can reach now and what may become reachable when they can pull up, stand, and climb. Store tempting items out of reach and place heavier objects lower. For toys with loose or small pieces, strings, or cords, Health Canada advises keeping them out of reach until a child is at least three years old and has stopped putting non-food items in their mouth. This is Canadian public-health guidance, not a universal product standard.

Install and arrange shelves with tip-over safety in mind
Shelves and bookcases can tip if a child climbs on, pulls up on, or falls against them. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) advises securing furniture such as bookcases and dressers to the wall. Health Canada’s nursery guidance says to follow the manufacturer’s assembly instructions and secure furniture to a stud or with heavy-duty drywall anchors or anchors made for that furniture type.
- Read the product instructions. Use the assembly and anchoring directions for the specific shelf or bookcase, and check that the proposed mounting method is suitable for the wall.
- Choose a suitable attachment point and hardware. Health Canada advises securing nursery furniture to a stud or using heavy-duty drywall anchors or furniture-specific anchors. The right option depends on the furniture and wall.
- Arrange stored items to discourage climbing. Keep tempting items out of reach, place heavier items on lower shelves, and avoid using the shelf arrangement as a series of steps.
- Keep cords away from the crib. Route cords from baby monitors, lamps, sound machines, and other electronics out of the crib’s reach. Health Canada advises mounting a baby monitor to a wall out of reach rather than placing it on the crib.

Understand the safety figures and their scope
The CPSC reported in 2025 that tip-over-related injuries and deaths in the United States declined by nearly 50 percent during the Anchor It! campaign period, attributing the decline to campaign efforts. The agency’s advice includes anchoring bookcases and other furniture securely to a wall.
Separate CPSC figures illustrate the risks associated with clothing storage units specifically: from January 2000 through April 2022, the agency reported 234 fatalities from clothing-storage-unit tip-overs, including 199 child fatalities. It also estimated 84,100 clothing-storage-unit tip-over injuries treated in U.S. hospital emergency departments from 2006 through 2021, an estimated annual average of 5,300. These figures concern clothing storage units, not every nursery shelf or bookcase. The CPSC clothing-storage-unit rule took effect September 1, 2023; it should not be read as a rule for every shelf.

Another CPSC estimate covered a broader category: during 2018–2020, an annual average of 22,500 U.S. emergency-department-treated tip-over injuries involved furniture, TVs, or appliances, and nearly 44 percent involved people under 18. Its scope differs from the clothing-storage-unit figures.
