Set the refresh rate to your monitor’s supported maximum in your computer’s display settings. Turn on the adaptive sync mode (VRR) your monitor and GPU or console both support. Pick brightness by mode and room, not by one universal number. Leave the monitor’s burn-in protection features on. The details differ by model, so this guide gives a starting point and shows where to check your own manual.
Refresh rate: set it in the OS, at the maximum your setup supports
A monitor does not always run at its top refresh rate out of the box. Dell’s support FAQ points users to Windows Display Settings to change it, so the monitor’s on-screen display (OSD) is usually where you confirm the rate, not where you set it. See Dell’s gaming monitor FAQ.
Steps on Windows
- Connect with a cable and port that support the resolution and refresh rate you want. Check the monitor manual, because the limit can depend on the input.
- Open Settings > System > Display > Advanced display.
- Under “Choose a refresh rate”, select the highest value listed for your resolution.
- Check the OSD information or status screen to confirm the monitor reports the same rate.
Why the exact model matters
Maximums vary even within one brand’s QHD lineup. LG lists 240Hz for the 27GX704A-B and 480Hz for the 27GX790A-B. A higher number only helps if your system can output that mode and your game can produce enough frames. If the top rate is missing from the list, the usual causes are the cable, the port, or a resolution setting that doesn’t allow it.
VRR: turn it on for gaming when the whole chain supports it
Variable refresh rate lets the monitor match the frame rate your GPU delivers. LG says its listed sync technologies reduce tearing or stuttering. Labels you may see include NVIDIA G-SYNC Compatible, AMD FreeSync Premium Pro, and VESA AdaptiveSync (see the LG pages above).
#1 Best Overall
- Samsung’s 27” Odyssey OLED G6 Gaming Monitor is engineered for perfection with a QD-OLED Display featuring QHD resolution made to deliver high brightness and a wide range of colors for gameplay
- OLED Safeguard technology supports performance by actively helping to prevent burn-in with a thermal modulation system
- Glare Free Technology keeps screen clear of reflection from external light sources
- The Pantone Validated screen accurately reproduces 2100+ lifelike colors and 110+ skin tone shades
- HDR10 provides brighter highlights and nuanced shadows for added depth and more realistic scenes
- Monitor: enable the adaptive sync option in the OSD if it has one. The menu name varies by model.
- GPU or console: enable the matching setting in the graphics driver or console video settings.
- Connection: use an input that supports VRR on your model. A manufacturer’s feature list doesn’t guarantee every GPU, cable and console combination, so confirm yours in the manual.
Brightness and HDR: choose by mode, not by one number
No source supports a single best brightness value for all OLED gaming monitors. Treat SDR desktop use and HDR gaming separately, and set each to a level that looks comfortable in your room.
Model-specific figures show why
LG specifies 275 nits standard luminosity and 1300 nits peak brightness for the 27GX704A-B. Its page also describes brighter setups: turn off Smart Energy Saving, choose the Gamer 1 mode, raise brightness, and set Peak Brightness to High. LG warns that these choices can increase power consumption and burn-in risk. Those are LG, model-specific options, not defaults to copy onto another monitor.

ASUS notes that newer QD-OLED generations can differ in peak and full-screen brightness, efficiency, panel durability, reflections and pixel layout (ASUS protection FAQ). Settings advice from one generation or brand may not carry over.
A practical approach
- Start from the monitor’s documented SDR and gaming modes, then adjust brightness for your room.
- Enable HDR in Windows only for HDR content, and use the monitor’s HDR mode controls.
- Don’t raise brightness to maximum or disable energy-saving and protection options just to chase a brighter image, unless you accept the trade-off the maker describes.
Burn-in protection and maintenance
ASUS states: “Image persistence, or burn-in, on an OLED display can occur if a static high-contrast image is displayed for a prolonged period of time.” Keep the protections your monitor offers enabled:

- Pixel shift / screen move: ASUS explains it moves displayed pixels slightly.
- Screen saver or logo dimming: reduces the time static content stays at full intensity.
- Pixel or image cleaning: ASUS describes a process of roughly six minutes.
These reduce risk but don’t eliminate it. LG cautions: “It may not prevent every afterimage or display burn-in with this method.”
Follow your own monitor’s maintenance prompts
Schedules are brand-specific. Dell’s FAQ says Pixel Refresh can run automatically after at least four hours of use and takes six to eight minutes. A separate Panel Refresh applies at about 1,500 hours of accumulated use and takes roughly an hour on applicable models. Those figures are Dell’s, for its described models. On other brands, follow the prompts and manual rather than copying Dell’s timings or forcing a refresh early.
