By worldwide hardware sales, the top-selling console in each numbered home-console generation ranges from the Atari 2600 in generation two to the PlayStation 2 in generation six. The table below follows Meta Awards’ common home-console numbering and excludes handhelds. “Best-selling” means reported unit sales—not quality, value, reviews, or personal preference.
Which console sold the most in each generation?
These winners and generation totals use the same classification and sales table from Meta Awards’ 2026 console sales comparison. Figures are in millions and rounded as reported there.

Generation eight is the largest grouping in this table at 369.0 million units. Generation nine is still in progress, so its 130.3 million total is a snapshot, not a final generation tally.

How to interpret the rankings
Generation numbers are not universal
Console generations are a convention, not a universally fixed classification. Meta Awards follows common home-console numbering and leaves out handhelds. Its table places Nintendo Switch in generation eight, although other sources classify it as generation nine. That placement affects both the generation winner and the grouping total, so comparisons are meaningful only when the same convention is used.

Generation totals are less certain than the table suggests
The totals combine systems whose sales figures do not all come from the same reporting method. The Top100Sales ranking, updated October 2, 2026, notes that figures can reflect manufacturer-reported shipments or sell-through, making comparisons across eras approximate. Microsoft stopped publishing Xbox unit sales in 2015; Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S totals are estimates in the cited rankings, not current manufacturer-reported totals. Generation totals that include those systems should therefore be treated as estimates rather than precise audited sums.
Sales do not measure quality
A sales leader is simply the system with the most reported units under a particular counting method. Meta Awards also lists game-of-the-year awards, but that is a separate measure; neither awards nor sales establish that a console is better to play or a better purchase.

Current Nintendo figures and the ongoing generation
Nintendo’s dedicated video game sales page reports consolidated worldwide life-to-date hardware unit sales as of June 30, 2026: Nintendo Switch at 156.59 million and Nintendo Switch 2 at 23.68 million. The more precise Switch figure is close to Meta Awards’ rounded 156.6 million entry. These manufacturer-reported figures are a dated snapshot; they do not make generation nine’s total final, nor do sales alone indicate which system a reader should buy.
