There is no single best self-hosted monitoring tool for every Proxmox homelab. Start with Proxmox Datacenter Manager if you mainly need a centralized view of Proxmox nodes, guests, and storage. Consider Netdata for host-level collection that can discover VMs and containers, or Zabbix and Checkmk when you want a broader monitoring platform with a dedicated Proxmox integration. A Prometheus and Grafana stack offers flexibility, but you must choose and maintain the collection and dashboard components yourself.
How to choose monitoring for a Proxmox homelab
First decide what you need to observe: Proxmox infrastructure, the operating systems and services running on it, or both. A Proxmox dashboard can show infrastructure health without necessarily covering every application or network device in the homelab. Conversely, a general-purpose monitoring platform may cover more than Proxmox but require additional setup.
- Proxmox overview: Look for status and health across nodes, guests, and storage.
- Collection method: Netdata documents host-side discovery through Linux cgroups; Zabbix’s Proxmox template polls the API.
- Alerts: Check which Proxmox conditions are covered by default and which require configuration.
- Setup and access: Account for host placement, API tokens, and monitoring-user permissions.
- Wider coverage: Confirm that your chosen platform supports the other operating systems, services, and devices you need to monitor.
The tools below address different needs; the available documentation does not establish a measured cross-tool winner for performance, setup effort, or reliability.
Proxmox Datacenter Manager: a native infrastructure overview
Proxmox Datacenter Manager is a natural starting point when your priority is centralized visibility into Proxmox itself. Its documentation describes a global dashboard for monitoring the status, health, and load of nodes, virtual guests, and storage backends. It can highlight resource consumption and failed tasks. See the Proxmox Datacenter Manager documentation (release 1.1.7).

This is an infrastructure overview, not evidence that Datacenter Manager replaces a general-purpose system for every homelab service. If you also need detailed application-level monitoring or coverage of non-Proxmox systems, assess that separately.
Netdata: automatic VM and container visibility from the host
Netdata’s Proxmox guide describes installing the agent on the Proxmox host. From there, it can discover KVM/QEMU virtual machines and LXC containers through Linux cgroups and collect per-guest CPU, memory, disk I/O, and network metrics, alongside host metrics, storage health, and cluster components. Installing inside an individual VM or container does not provide the same host-level view of all guests. Read Netdata’s Proxmox VE Monitoring guide, reported updated September 6, 2026.
Netdata’s documentation says its integration’s default configuration does not impose collection limits and is not expected to cause significant performance impact. That is the vendor’s stated expectation, not an independent benchmark. Netdata also notes that UI configuration requires a paid Netdata Cloud plan; see its Proxmox VE integration documentation.

Zabbix: API-based monitoring with documented Proxmox alerts
Zabbix publishes a Proxmox VE by HTTP template that uses the Proxmox API and does not require external scripts. Its documented coverage includes nodes, virtual machines, containers, cluster state, API status, and storage-related state and metrics. Documented triggers include an unavailable API service, offline nodes, lost cluster quorum, stopped guests, and high resource use. See Zabbix’s Proxmox monitoring and integration guide.
Deployment requires a Proxmox API token. Zabbix recommends a separate monitoring user with only the required audit permissions. The page lists multiple template variants with different requirements, so match the version row to your installed Zabbix release rather than assuming a single minimum version.
Checkmk: a dedicated integration in a broader platform
Checkmk has a dedicated Proxmox monitoring guide for operators who want Proxmox monitoring within a broader monitoring platform. The guide expects a properly configured Proxmox VE environment and a Proxmox monitoring user with appropriate permissions. Plan for that identity and permission setup as part of deployment. See Checkmk’s Monitoring Proxmox guide.

Prometheus and Grafana: a flexible stack you assemble
Prometheus and Grafana are a general-purpose direction for metrics collection and dashboarding. The trade-off is that you need to choose and maintain the collectors or exporters, data flow, and dashboards that fit your Proxmox environment. The available official documentation does not provide a complete current Proxmox deployment recipe or a verified comparison of setup complexity, so treat this as a flexible architecture rather than a turnkey recommendation.
Comparison at a glance
| Option | Proxmox collection or view | Documented coverage | Setup consideration |
|---|---|---|---|
| Proxmox Datacenter Manager | Native centralized overview | Node, guest, and storage status, health, and load; resource consumption and failed tasks | Documentation supports the Proxmox overview use case; broader service coverage is not established |
| Netdata | Host-installed agent; guest discovery through Linux cgroups | Host metrics; per-VM and per-container CPU, memory, disk I/O, and network; storage health and cluster components | Install on the Proxmox host for visibility across guests; UI configuration requires a paid Netdata Cloud plan |
| Zabbix | Proxmox API polling through a published HTTP template | Nodes, guests, cluster, API, and storage-related state and metrics; documented triggers for several failure and resource conditions | Configure an API token and restricted monitoring user; check the template variant for your Zabbix release |
| Checkmk | Dedicated Proxmox integration | Proxmox monitoring; the guide does not enumerate comparable item and trigger coverage here | Requires a configured Proxmox monitoring user with appropriate permissions |
| Prometheus and Grafana | Metrics stack assembled from selected components | Depends on the collectors, exporters, and dashboards you choose | A complete current Proxmox recipe and authoritative setup comparison are not established by the cited sources |

Keep Proxmox documentation and versions in view
Proxmox’s download page lists the Proxmox VE Admin Guide for 9.x as version 9.2, last updated August 10, 2026. That version context does not establish compatibility for every third-party integration; check each tool’s current requirements. Zabbix specifically lists multiple template variants, and Checkmk’s guide uses a rolling “latest” documentation path.
