For most joints that are regularly exposed to bath or shower water, start with a bathroom-rated 100% silicone sealant. Consider a siliconized acrylic-latex hybrid when paintability or easier cleanup matters, but check that the exact product suits the surfaces and joint. No universal best brand or independently proven durability ranking is established by the available product information.
Which sealant should you use around a tub or shower?
Choose by the joint’s exposure to water, the materials being joined, and the product’s application and cure instructions—not by the words “kitchen and bath” alone. Oatey’s guidance describes silicone as flexible and water resistant for bathroom uses, while a siliconized acrylic-latex hybrid may be easier to apply and may be paintable. Acrylic-latex products can also be paintable, but a general-purpose painter’s caulk should not automatically be used in a joint that stays wet.
- Regularly wet joint: A bathroom-rated 100% silicone is a practical starting point if its label confirms compatibility with both surfaces.
- Paintability or cleanup is important: Check whether a bathroom-rated hybrid or acrylic-latex product fits the joint and its water exposure. Formulations and water-ready times vary.
- Unusual or sensitive surface: Confirm compatibility for the exact material, especially with acrylic tubs, coated surfaces, and stone. Do not assume a sealant intended for ceramic or other nonporous surfaces is suitable.
These are selection guidelines based on manufacturer descriptions, not results from controlled head-to-head testing. Mildew- or mold-resistance claims describe product features; they are not a guarantee against persistent moisture or indefinite mold prevention.
Compare the main sealant types
| Type | Why you might choose it | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| 100% silicone | Manufacturer guidance identifies it for wet tub, shower, and fixture joints; it remains flexible and is commonly sold with mildew-resistance claims. | It is often not paintable. Confirm adhesion to the exact tub or surround material, and follow the product’s cure instructions. |
| Siliconized acrylic-latex hybrid | May offer easier application or cleanup and paintability alongside flexibility and water resistance. | Water-ready timing, surface compatibility, and standards claims differ among products. Check the exact label and technical sheet. |
| Acrylic-latex | Water-based products are paintable after cure; bathroom varieties are available for fixtures and related tasks. | Choose a bathroom-rated formulation for the intended joint. Do not substitute general-purpose painter’s caulk for a continuously wet joint without label support. |
Before buying, compare the product’s substrate compatibility, chemistry and paintability, mildew-resistance claim, cure or water-ready time, available color, and application and cleanup requirements.

Product examples and documented claims
These examples illustrate different formulations and stated uses; they are not a tested ranking. Product formulations and claims can change, so verify the current package and technical data sheet.
| Product | What its manufacturer states | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| DOWSIL Tub/Tile/Ceramic Sealant (Dow) | One-part acetoxy-cure silicone intended for nonporous surfaces, with listed uses including tubs, shower enclosures, and watertight seals around bath and shower fixtures. Dow lists a 5–10 minute working time and a 24-hour room-temperature cure property. | Those times are product-specific; confirm current instructions and compatibility with the surfaces being sealed. |
| Oatey Silicone Sealant (Oatey) | Oatey lists ceramic tile, tubs, showers, rimless sinks, and plumbing fixtures as uses and describes the product as mildew resistant. | Check the current package for the intended surface and cure instructions. |
| Pro Seal Max Kitchen & Bath (GE Sealants/Henkel) | The U.S. product page describes a paintable hybrid for moisture-prone projects, including tubs and showers, and states immediate water-ready time, permanent flexibility, and mold/mildew resistance. It lists ASTM C-920 Class 35 for white and Class 25 for clear. | These are manufacturer claims, subject to the product’s disclaimers; they are not independent assessments. Confirm the current label and substrate fit. |
| Tub & Tile Caulk (Bostik) | Bostik’s U.S. page describes a siliconized acrylic product for tubs, showers, and tile joints that meets or exceeds ASTM C834. | The page notes a newer version; verify the current product documentation before selecting it. |
How to replace a failed bead
- Remove the old sealant. Use a suitable scraper, putty knife, or razor tool carefully so you do not damage the tub, tile, or finish. Remove residue as well as the visible bead.
- Clean and dry the joint. Follow the sealant maker’s surface-preparation directions. Oatey cautions that new caulk will not adhere to remnants of old caulk.
- Mask and apply. Mask both sides of the joint if desired. Cut the nozzle for the bead size you need, then apply a continuous bead.
- Smooth promptly. Tool the bead according to the product’s instructions and working time. For the silicone products addressed in its guidance, LATICRETE advises smoothing within 5–7 minutes; that window should not be transferred to other products.
- Wait before using the tub or shower. Follow the exact product’s cure or water-ready instructions and the stated conditions. A room-temperature cure figure or another manufacturer’s timing is not a universal wait time.
Why cure times and “water-ready” claims are not interchangeable
Manufacturers report timing in different ways, including working time, set time, full cure, and water-ready time. These describe different stages and cannot safely be treated as equivalent. For example, Dow lists a 24-hour room-temperature cure property for its named silicone; LATICRETE’s 2024 guidance gives under 20 minutes to set and 24 hours to fully cure for LATASIL 100% silicone, and 48 hours to set and two weeks to fully cure for its Premium Acrylic Caulk. Those figures apply only to the products named, not to other brands or formulations.

Use the current package or technical data sheet for the precise product in hand, including any temperature or other application conditions. If the label’s water-ready instruction differs from general guidance, the product-specific instruction controls.
What “best” can—and cannot—mean
Manufacturer guidance supports choosing a sealant by formulation, wet exposure, and surface compatibility. The cited pages do not establish a universal brand winner or provide independent comparative longevity testing. A mildew-resistance label is also not evidence that a product will eliminate ongoing moisture problems. Fit the sealant to the joint, prepare the surfaces thoroughly, and use the specified cure schedule rather than relying on a broad brand ranking.
