For corrugated metal roofing, choose a roofing screw with an EPDM sealing washer that matches the material beneath the panel: a wood screw for wood supports or a self-drilling screw for metal purlins. There is no single best screw size or fastening location for every corrugated roof. Follow the current installation guide for your specific panel profile, support, and roof system.
Identify what the screw must fasten into
The right fastener depends first on the supporting material. A screw intended for wood does not automatically suit a metal purlin, and the correct type and size can vary by panel system.
- Dimensional lumber: S3 Metals specifies woodfast screws for its 7/8-inch corrugated panel system.
- Plywood or OSB: That same S3 guide specifies a #14 fastener for plywood/OSB attachment.
- Metal purlins: S3 specifies Tek screws for its system.
These are product-specific recommendations, not universal sizes. Before buying, check the panel maker’s instructions and identify the support material and thickness. S3 Metals’ 7/8-inch corrugated panel guide describes the fasteners for its system.

Use the panel maker’s fastening location and pattern
Corrugated profiles do not all use the same screw location or layout. S3 Metals gives a rib-and-purlin pattern for its panel system; Triad’s AG panel guide, by contrast, specifies a screw in the flat and fastening at every purlin. Those instructions apply to their respective products, not to corrugated roofing in general.

Find the installation guide for the exact panel before laying out holes. It should establish where screws go and how the panel attaches at supports and laps. Do not copy a pattern from a different corrugated profile simply because the sheets look similar. Triad’s AG panel installation guide shows the instructions for that product.
Choose a screw length that engages the support
The screw must pass through the sheet and engage the supporting material as required by the panel system. Suitable length therefore depends on the panel profile, support material, and support thickness. S3 Metals provides penetration guidance for its own system and distinguishes lumber from plywood attachment; use its instructions only when they match your roof assembly.

Do not select a length from the panel’s appearance alone. Check the current manufacturer specification for the complete assembly, including any required penetration into the support.
Seal the hole without damaging the washer or sheet
Use the specified roofing screw with a sealing washer; S3 Metals calls for EPDM sealing washers on roof and wall fasteners. Drive the screw until the washer is compressed securely against the panel, but do not crush the washer or deform the sheet. Underdriving can leave an inadequate seal; overdriving can damage the washer and dimple the panel, creating a place where water may collect.

S3 recommends a depth-sensing screw gun to control driving depth and warns against both overdriving and underdriving. Triad likewise emphasizes secure washer compression and cautions that overdriving can dimple its panel. The correct setting depends on the fastener and panel system, so follow the applicable installation instructions rather than relying on a universal torque or depth.
Check metal compatibility and corrosion resistance
Fastener material and roof material should be compatible. A NOAA-hosted homeowner handbook gives aluminum roofing with aluminum screws as an example of matching materials. For your roof, confirm compatibility with its manufacturer, particularly where dissimilar metals or exposed conditions could raise corrosion concerns. NOAA’s handbook section on fastening roofs to purlins offers broad context, but it does not replace current product instructions.

Keep lap screws and tools separate from the main fastener choice
Short stitch screws may be used for metal-to-metal panel laps where the panel guide calls for them. They are not substitutes for the screws that attach the panel to its support. A depth-sensing screw gun can help control installation depth, but the prescribed fastener, layout, and washer still come from the roof system’s instructions.

What to check before buying
- Identify the exact metal panel profile and manufacturer.
- Confirm whether the support is dimensional lumber, plywood/OSB, or metal purlins, and note its thickness.
- Use the manufacturer’s specified fastener type, length, washer, penetration, and fastening pattern.
- Confirm that fastener and roof materials are compatible for the installation and exposure conditions.
- Install to the prescribed depth so the washer seals without being crushed or the sheet being dimpled.
The practical search phrase is “metal roofing screws with EPDM washers,” but a product listing is suitable only if it matches your support and panel manufacturer’s specifications.

Do not transfer polycarbonate specifications to metal roofing
Palram’s SUNTUF Plus instructions cover corrugated polycarbonate sheets, not tin or metal panels. They illustrate that substrate affects screw choice—self-tapping fasteners for timber and self-drilling fasteners for metal purlins—and call for corrosion-resistant screws with EPDM gaskets. Their dimensions and sheet-expansion guidance are not specifications for metal roofing. Palram’s SUNTUF Plus guide applies to its polycarbonate product.
