Why the Academy of Natural Sciences is not on the open-museum list

Drexel and Academy leadership announced that the Academy’s Parkway museum closed as of September 30, 2026. The announcement says the institution will continue its research, care of collections, public engagement, and education work while pursuing sustainable opportunities for public display. That does not establish a current visitor venue or reopening date.

Some Academy visitor pages still show hours, admission, exhibits, and school bookings, but they conflict with the later closure announcement and should not be treated as evidence that the museum is open. Do not plan an in-person visit unless a newer official reopening announcement confirms one.

The closure announcement describes the continuing scientific resources: more than 19 million specimens and other scientific resources, more than 73,000 type specimens, and more than 75,000 library titles. Those figures describe collections and archives, not attractions currently available to museum visitors.

Choose by age, time, and trip style

  • For the broadest hands-on science experience: choose The Franklin Institute and allow several hours.
  • For younger children who benefit from play-led learning: choose Please Touch, while keeping in mind that it is a children’s museum rather than a conventional science center.
  • For a free, shorter visit or older-student focus: choose the Science History Institute for its history-of-science exhibitions and school programming.
  • For a day trip beyond Philadelphia: consider Da Vinci Science Center in Allentown and verify seasonal group details.

For school planning, compare not only subject matter and student age but also the expected time on site, current group price, reservation lead time, adult-to-student ratio, meal arrangements, and transportation. Check each institution’s current official visit and group information before booking; the details most likely to change are operating schedules, rates, exhibits, and availability.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
