For a challenging solo run, choose Returnal; for a team-focused shooter, choose Helldivers 2; and for a mix of campaign, co-op missions, and PvP, choose Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2. Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun 2 is the first-person campaign option to consider, but check the PlayStation Store in your region before treating it as available.

Choose a game by how you want to play
For intense solo runs: Returnal
PlayStation describes Returnal as a third-person roguelike shooter on a transforming alien planet. Its run-based structure and bullet-hell combat make it the clearest choice here if you want a demanding solo follow-up with an evolving world and a mystery-led story. A run-based game is different from a conventional campaign: expect repeated attempts rather than a single uninterrupted path through the action.

Online co-op is optional and supports up to two players; PlayStation Plus is required for online play. The game also uses DualSense adaptive triggers for alternate firing modes and haptic feedback. These controller features are optional enhancements, not a requirement to play.
For coordinated squad missions: Helldivers 2
PlayStation presents Helldivers 2 as a third-person cooperative shooter for PS5 and PC. You can team up with up to three friends, customize your loadout, and call in stratagems during missions. Pick it when playing with a squad is the main draw, rather than when you are looking for a solo-first campaign.

The PlayStation page also notes that the game launched on Xbox Series X|S on August 26, 2025. That platform expansion does not change the PS5 recommendation, but it means the game is no longer exclusive to PlayStation and PC.
For campaign, co-op PvE, and competitive PvP: Space Marine 2
PlayStation lists three distinct formats for Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2: a campaign playable alone or with up to two friends, replayable PvE missions for up to three players, and 6v6 PvP. Choose it if you want a solo-capable campaign but also want separate cooperative and competitive modes to return to.

The listing does not establish whether it is currently available in every region, so check your local Store before choosing it as an immediate next game.

- Want friends in the action? Choose Helldivers 2 for squad missions with up to three friends. Choose Space Marine 2 if you also want replayable co-op PvE and a separate PvP mode.
- Prefer first-person shooting? Check the regional listing for Boltgun 2; the other three picks are described as third-person games.
- Want a repeatable challenge? Returnal is the run-based pick. For replayable group missions, Space Marine 2 offers PvE missions for up to three players.

Store availability, prices, editions, discounts, and subscription-catalog inclusion can change by date and region. Verify the current PlayStation Store listing before buying. For Returnal, PlayStation specifically states that PlayStation Plus is required for online play; its online co-op is optional. The product descriptions establish different play formats, not a universal quality ranking, so the best choice depends on whether you value solo runs, squad missions, multiple modes, or a first-person campaign.
