There is no universally safe or legally risk-free abandonware site. “Abandonware” is an informal label, not a copyright license. Check GOG or another official release first. For genuinely free or authorized DOS software, use a rights-conscious archive such as DOS Games Archive. Treat large repositories such as MyAbandonware, OldGamesDownload and individual Internet Archive uploads as case-by-case archival resources—not proof that a download is authorized or malware-free.
What “abandonware” means
People usually call software “abandonware” when it is no longer sold, supported or maintained. That description does not place a game in the public domain. A title may still be copyrighted, owned by a successor company, tied up in music or trademark licensing, restricted to another region, or awaiting a re-release.
For U.S. readers, computer files are generally protected by copyright unless the owner granted permission, the work entered the public domain, or another license applies. The U.S. Copyright Office does not create an “abandonware” exception. Personal use, preservation interest and a publisher’s bankruptcy do not automatically authorize downloading an unauthorized copy.
Separate four questions before you download:
- Domain safety: Is this the genuine site rather than a lookalike?
- File safety: Is the archive unmodified and free of unwanted software?
- Execution safety: Can you run it without exposing your computer or files?
- Legal safety: Is redistribution authorized for this title and your jurisdiction?
Quick comparison
| Site or service | Best use | Rights clarity | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| GOG | Buying a classic PC game legally | Official commercial distribution; many releases are positioned as DRM-free | Not every title is available; versions may differ from original discs |
| DOS Games Archive | Freeware, shareware and authorized DOS releases | States that it researches distribution rights and sometimes obtains permission | Narrower catalog; a site statement is not a government ruling for every file |
| RGB Classic Games | DOS resources, utilities and compatibility guidance | Verify each game’s license | Technical help does not itself authorize commercial downloads |
| Internet Archive | Preservation, manuals and browser-based research | Item-specific; its rights guidance disclaims guaranteed copyright status | User uploads can have uncertain provenance |
| MyAbandonware | Finding obscure titles and metadata | Case-by-case; its FAQ acknowledges uncertainty | Cracks, repacks and deceptive download elements may require extra scrutiny |
| OldGamesDownload | Secondary catalog for hard-to-find games | States that some re-released games are delisted | Delisting does not prove that every remaining download is authorized |

Free and rights-conscious DOS software: DOS Games Archive
DOS Games Archive explicitly says it is not an abandonware website. Its about page says it researches legal status and distribution rights and sometimes obtains permission from authors or copyright holders. That makes it a better first stop for freeware, shareware, demos and explicitly authorized releases, although you should still read the title’s own notes.
Technical DOS help: RGB Classic Games
RGB Classic Games is especially useful for DOS utilities, setup information and compatibility instructions. Its DOS utilities page explains DOSBox and links to free DOS alternatives. Use that guidance alongside a source whose distribution rights are clear.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minutePreservation and browser testing: Internet Archive
Internet Archive can provide manuals, documentation and browser-based MS-DOS emulation in some collections. Browser play avoids installing an unknown executable locally, but it does not prove that an upload is authorized, and it may not provide an archival copy you can keep. Check the individual item and the archive’s rights disclaimer.
Large discovery catalogs: MyAbandonware and OldGamesDownload
MyAbandonware offers extensive search, screenshots, manuals and compatibility notes. Its FAQ recommends scanning downloads and notes that games can leave its catalog when they return to GOG, Steam or another legal channel. That is useful practice, not a blanket legality guarantee.
OldGamesDownload’s download policy says games relaunched by publishers are delisted, while pages may remain to direct readers to official purchasing channels. Treat that as a positive editorial signal, not proof that all other files are licensed.

The safest order of operations
- Search GOG and the publisher or developer’s current official channels.
- Check whether the title is freeware, shareware, public-domain, open-source or explicitly authorized.
- For preservation or browser testing, look for an appropriate Internet Archive collection.
- Only then consider a broad archive for an unavailable commercial title, while accepting legal and security uncertainty.
Download safety checklist
- Use the exact domain and avoid sponsored lookalikes, fake “Download” buttons, redirects and browser-notification prompts.
- Prefer an original disk image or documented archive over a mysterious one-click installer.
- Reject anything requiring a download manager, browser extension, password from a pop-up or antivirus deactivation.
- Scan the archive and extracted files with current security software. A multi-engine service such as VirusTotal can provide another signal; MyAbandonware itself recommends checking downloads where possible.
- Keep the original archive unchanged so you can rescan or compare it later.
- Test uncertain executables in a disposable virtual machine, Windows Sandbox where supported, or a separate non-administrator account.
- Keep personal folders and network shares out of the test environment and disconnect its network unless online access is required.
A clean scan is not proof of legality or a permanent security guarantee.
Cracks, NoCD patches and key generators
A NoCD patch changes an executable to bypass a disc check; a crack generally bypasses copy protection; a key generator creates purported activation credentials. All modify executable code or generate license data and therefore deserve more suspicion than an original installer. MyAbandonware’s FAQ notes that protection-related files may trigger security tools and that key generators or NoCD files can be malicious.
Avoid key generators entirely. Prefer an official release, publisher patch, original installer or compatibility layer that does not bypass protection. Never disable antivirus merely because a download page calls a detection a false positive.
Running DOS games today
DOSBox is a compatibility emulator; FreeDOS is a DOS-like operating system. Neither supplies commercial game copies. RGB Classic Games documents DOSBox use for modern operating systems.
A generic DOSBox session looks like this:
mount c /path/to/game c: dir game.exe
The executable may instead be START.EXE, PLAY.EXE, RUN.BAT or another title-specific file. Common problems include an incorrect filename, excessive emulation speed, missing Sound Blaster or MIDI configuration, distorted scaling and memory settings. Use the game’s setup program and manual; settings such as Sound Blaster address 220, IRQ 7 and DMA 1 are common examples, not universal requirements.

Windows 3.x and 9x games may use 16-bit installers that cannot run on 64-bit Windows, or depend on DirectDraw and early DirectX behavior. Solutions can include a historically appropriate Windows 95/98/XP virtual machine, a community compatibility patch or writable installation permissions. Each patch has its own provenance and security risk. An official GOG release is usually simpler because compatibility work may already be bundled.

When the game is not on GOG
Steam absence, a defunct publisher or an out-of-print box proves nothing about ownership. Rights may have moved to a successor, remained with founders, been split by territory, or be blocked by music and trademark agreements. Search the publisher, developer, successor company and reputable storefronts before assuming a title is free to redistribute.
If you need an original regional build, demo, unpatched release, removed soundtrack or version history, preservation needs differ from ordinary play. Documented archival material may be valuable even when a modern commercial release is the better choice for playing.
A practical decision tree
- Officially sold? Buy or download it from the official store.
- Explicitly free or authorized? Use the documented source, such as a rights-conscious archive.
- Need research or browser testing? Use an appropriate Internet Archive collection, checking item rights.
- Unavailable commercial copy? Recognize that “abandonware” does not resolve copyright; apply strict file and execution precautions if you proceed.
FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
Is downloading abandonware legal in the United States?
Usually not automatically. Copyright generally continues after sales and support end. Legality depends on the title, license, rights history, jurisdiction and use; this is general information, not legal advice.
What if I own the original disk?
Ownership may affect narrow backup or archival questions, but it does not automatically authorize downloading someone else’s copy or bypassing protection. Check the applicable law and license.
Does a publisher going out of business make a game free?
No. Copyright may have been sold, inherited, retained or left in legal uncertainty.
Are PC abandonware downloads treated like ROMs?
They involve the same core issue: an old or unavailable work can remain copyrighted. Do not assume that different file formats create different permission.
The Bottom Line
Search GOG or another official release first. Use DOS Games Archive for documented free or authorized DOS software, RGB Classic Games for technical help, and Internet Archive for preservation research. MyAbandonware and OldGamesDownload can help locate obscure titles, but neither catalog size nor a clean antivirus scan proves that a download is authorized or permanently safe.
