There is no single best running watch for everyone training from a first 5K to a marathon. For an all-around training and marathon option, the5krunner recommends the Garmin Forerunner 570; for a value-focused, lightweight alternative, consider the COROS PACE 4; and for iPhone owners who prioritize smartwatch features, consider the Apple Watch Series 11. These are published editorial assessments, not results of testing for this article. The right choice depends on your budget, training needs, phone, and willingness to charge frequently.

Which running watch is best for a 5K and marathon training?

Start with the distance and training you actually plan to do. A first 5K typically calls for reliable GPS pace and distance, a screen you can read while moving, and controls that are easy to use. Marathon training puts more weight on GPS-workout battery life, structured workouts, pacing support, long-run comfort, and whether the watch can last through your expected finish time.

TechRadar’s 2026 guide says, “Ultimately, there’s no universal winner.” That is a useful way to think about the choice: match features to your training rather than paying for a watch simply because it has the longest feature list.

Watch Best fit What the cited coverage highlights Key qualification
Garmin Forerunner 570 Runners who want training guidance and marathon-focused tools the5krunner’s October 2026 guide highlights training readiness, acute load, recovery time, race predictions, daily workout suggestions, structured workouts, pacing support, and 18 hours of GPS runtime. The 18-hour figure is the publication’s reported estimate; actual runtime depends on configuration and settings. Its recommendation is an editorial pick, not a universal verdict.
COROS PACE 4 Value-focused runners who want a lightweight watch and long battery life TechRadar describes it as a refinement of the PACE formula with an AMOLED display and longer battery life; the5krunner also highlights running power support and track mode. Battery life depends on mode and settings. TechRadar notes the older PACE 3 could be a better buy when discounted; check current model availability and pricing.
Garmin Forerunner 70 Runners seeking Garmin’s training platform without a flagship-level feature set TechRadar recommends it for many runners and beginners, alongside the COROS PACE 3. It lacks some higher-end features. The cited comparison is editorial guidance, not a current official specification sheet.
Apple Watch Series 11 iPhone owners who value smartwatch and ecosystem features the5krunner reports up to 38 hours in Low Power Mode. That figure applies to Low Power Mode; do not assume it represents runtime in other modes or settings. Confirm that the mode you intend to use suits your workout.
Polar Vantage M3 Runners interested in Polar’s training and recovery approach the5krunner highlights dual-frequency GPS, running power support, and Polar training and recovery features. This is a broader comparison option, not a universal recommendation; choose it if those features and the platform suit your needs.

What matters most for a 5K?

GPS pace, distance, and readability

For a beginner or casual 5K runner, prioritize dependable pace and distance information, a display that is legible at a glance, and simple workout controls. Extensive recovery metrics, maps, and ultra-distance battery capacity may add little if you mainly run familiar routes and short sessions.

Comfort and ease of use

A watch should sit comfortably during everyday wear and running. If you plan to use it for intervals, check that starting, pausing, and viewing a workout are straightforward for you; controls and screen preferences are personal, so try the exact model when possible.

What changes when you train for a marathon?

Check GPS workout battery, not just smartwatch runtime

Battery figures can describe very different things. Smartwatch-mode runtime is not the same as runtime during a GPS workout, and GPS settings and display use can affect how long a watch lasts. Compare the estimate for the specific GPS mode you plan to use with your expected time on course, and leave margin for settings, battery aging, and the time before and after the race.

For the Forerunner 570, the5krunner reports 18 hours of GPS battery and considers that sufficient margin for marathon runners. Treat that as the publication’s assessment rather than a guarantee for every configuration or runner. For Apple Watch Series 11, the same publication reports up to 38 hours in Low Power Mode; that qualification matters, so verify that the mode and settings fit your intended workout.

Look for tools you will use in training

Structured workouts and pacing guidance can help organize long runs and race preparation. Training-load, recovery, readiness, and race-prediction features may be useful if you want that level of feedback, but they are not essential to complete a marathon. The Forerunner 570 is the clearest fit among these recommendations for runners seeking that mix of coaching-oriented features, based on the5krunner’s assessment.

Consider route and music needs

Think about whether you need navigation for unfamiliar routes or want to listen to music without carrying your phone. The cited coverage does not establish a complete, model-by-model comparison of mapping, music, or GPS-mode battery settings. Check the exact model and variant against your route and phone habits before choosing on those grounds.

How to choose without overbuying

  1. Set your main use. If you mainly need pace and distance for a 5K, do not pay extra solely for advanced recovery analysis or long-distance features.
  2. Match the platform to your phone and preferences. Apple Watch Series 11 is positioned for iPhone users who want deeper smartwatch and ecosystem features. Garmin, COROS, and Polar offer different training platforms; the cited guides do not establish one as best for every runner.
  3. Compare marathon runtime in the intended mode. Find the GPS-workout estimate for the exact watch configuration and compare it with your likely time on course, leaving a practical margin.
  4. Decide which training data you will act on. Choose a watch with structured workouts, pacing tools, or recovery features when those functions support your plan, not just because they are available.
  5. Check the current model and listing. Lineups, availability, variants, and prices can change. Confirm the exact model and current specifications before buying rather than relying on an older comparison or a volatile price snapshot.

When is a chest strap worth considering?

A chest strap is an optional add-on for runners who prioritize precise heart-rate-zone work. It is not a general requirement for running watches. Check that the strap is compatible with the watch and that any advanced metric you want actually supports the accessory; do not assume a sensor is necessary for features that work without one.
