If you want something to play before Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War IV, start with the earlier Dawn of War games for the closest match in setting, try Company of Heroes for squad-focused battlefield tactics, or choose Age of Empires IV for a historical campaign and economy-building. None is a mechanical substitute for a game that has not launched: the best fit depends on whether you want Warhammer lore, large battles, tactical squads or a classic RTS economy.

What games are like Dawn of War?

“Like” can mean different things here: the Warhammer 40,000 universe, large-scale battles with base-building, squad-led tactics, campaign play, or the familiar cycle of gathering resources, building an economy and producing an army. The games below match different parts of that mix rather than reproducing Dawn of War IV.

As of the publisher’s current listing, Dawn of War IV is planned for Windows via Steam on December 3, 2026. Deep Silver describes it as “a real time strategy (RTS) game set within the Warhammer 40,000 universe.” Its plans are subject to change, so check the official Deep Silver page for current availability.

Warhammer Community’s August 19, 2025 announcement describes a return to the series’ “mass-battle, base-building roots.” It names four factions—Blood Ravens Space Marines, Orks, Necrons and Adeptus Mechanicus—and places the campaign on Kronus. The announcement advertises 70+ missions playable solo or with a friend, plus Last Stand, Skirmish and multiplayer. That mission count and mode list are announced plans, not a verified final launch specification. Deep Silver’s FAQ also describes four mechanically distinct factions, separate faction campaigns linked by one overarching narrative, and support for solo and co-op in many modes.

What should I play while waiting for Dawn of War IV?

Game Best match What the cited source establishes
Dawn of War Warhammer 40,000 setting and franchise connection Relic calls it the realization of the Warhammer 40,000 universe in RTS form; its expansions added further gameplay designs. Relic’s series history
Dawn of War II Faster, more tactical play and character progression Relic says it focused on fast-action RTS play, RPG progression and character customization, and introduced three-player Last Stand. Relic’s series history
Company of Heroes Squad handling and battlefield tactics Relic describes an RTS built around squad mechanics and realistic, humanlike behaviour. Relic’s Company of Heroes history
Age of Empires IV Campaigns, resource gathering and economic development The official page lists four campaigns and ten included civilizations, and describes resource gathering, building, unit production, economic development and defending against attacks. Official Age of Empires IV page

Choose the original Dawn of War for Warhammer 40,000

The original Dawn of War is the closest choice if the setting and factions matter most: it is in the same franchise, not merely an RTS with a similar battle rhythm. Relic’s history page describes it as bringing the Warhammer 40,000 universe into RTS form. It also notes that expansions introduced additional gameplay designs, so the original and its expansions are not one unchanging package.

Choose Dawn of War II for a more tactical series entry

Dawn of War II is the series option to consider if you prefer fast action, character development and squad-level decisions to a focus on building a large base. Relic says it drew on gameplay features introduced in Company of Heroes, emphasized RPG progression and customization, and added the three-player Last Stand mode. That emphasis is distinct from the mass-battle, base-building direction announced for Dawn of War IV.

Choose Company of Heroes for squad-led battles

Company of Heroes is an adjacent pick if what you enjoy is controlling squads and making tactical battlefield decisions rather than following Warhammer lore. Relic’s developer history describes squad mechanics designed around realistic, humanlike behaviour. That source does not establish details for every current release or its present purchase options, so check the specific game’s current listing before buying.

Choose Age of Empires IV for economy-building and campaigns

Age of Empires IV offers a different kind of RTS match: a historical setting and an explicit economy loop. Its official overview describes gathering resources, constructing buildings, producing units, developing an economy and fighting off attacks. The page lists four campaigns and ten included civilizations. It is a fit for players who want those systems, not for players seeking Warhammer characters or lore.

Are there RTS games like Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War?

For the setting, the existing Dawn of War games are the direct answer. For the announced large-scale, base-building direction of the fourth game, the official sources establish that this is a stated return to the series’ roots; they do not establish that any alternative listed here will play identically. Dawn of War II and Company of Heroes are better matches for tactical squad play, while Age of Empires IV matches the economic-building side of RTS play in a different setting.

Is Company of Heroes like Dawn of War?

There is a meaningful connection in tactical design: Relic says Dawn of War II carried gameplay features introduced in Company of Heroes, and describes Company of Heroes as using squad mechanics. That makes it a reasonable choice if you want squad-led RTS battles. It is not a Warhammer 40,000 game, and the cited history does not establish that every Company of Heroes release shares the same systems or current modes.

How to choose the right game for your wait

  • Want the same universe? Start with the original Dawn of War.
  • Want a more tactical, character-focused series option? Try Dawn of War II.
  • Want squad-led battlefield tactics outside Warhammer? Consider Company of Heroes.
  • Want campaigns and a visible resource-to-army economy loop? Consider Age of Empires IV.

Before choosing, compare the dimensions that matter to you—setting, battle scale, squad tactics versus economic development, campaign content, solo or co-op options, and competitive modes. The cited official sources establish Dawn of War IV’s Windows/Steam plan and announced mode support, but they do not establish current formats and modes for every alternative; verify those details on the specific game’s current store or publisher page.
