There is no defensible nationwide winner for rideshare insurance in 2026: availability, coverage and price depend on your state, insurer, vehicle, platform and existing policy. Progressive and Allstate offer especially clear public explanations of their rideshare options; State Farm and Farmers also document named options. Treat them as a shortlist to check with local agents and quotes—not as a verified price ranking.
What rideshare insurance needs to cover
A transportation network company (TNC), such as a rideshare platform, may provide insurance for some periods of a trip. Your personal auto policy may treat app-based driving differently from private use. The important question is what applies during each app phase: while you are logged in and waiting for a request, after you accept and drive to the pickup, and while a passenger is in the vehicle. The handoff between your policy and the TNC’s coverage depends on policy wording, state rules and the platform.
Compare the protections separately rather than relying on the label “rideshare coverage”:
- Liability: What pays for injuries or property damage you cause to others in each app phase?
- Your vehicle: Does collision and comprehensive coverage apply while you are waiting, and must you already carry those coverages on your personal policy?
- Deductibles: What deductible applies under your personal policy and the TNC policy? Does the endorsement help with any difference?
- Medical and UM/UIM: Ask whether personal injury protection, medical payments, and uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage protect you or passengers, and during which phases.
Allstate’s explainer gives examples—including $25,000 in property-damage liability and $100,000 in injury liability while waiting, and a possible $2,500 vehicle deductible in later phases. These are examples in Allstate’s guidance, not universal current limits or rules; check the applicable TNC policy, state law and current policy documents for your situation. Insurers to check for rideshare coverage
These options are worth asking about, but an insurer’s public description does not establish that the coverage is available for every driver, platform or state. Confirm the exact terms before beginning TNC work.
| Insurer | What its public description says | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Progressive | Its rideshare add-on attaches to a personal auto policy and can extend selected coverages while the driver waits for a match. Progressive also describes reimbursement of some difference between the TNC deductible and personal-policy deductible. | Which coverages apply in each app phase, eligibility in your state, deductible-gap terms and the exact platform. Progressive says delivery coverage applies in most states, but interaction with delivery-platform insurance varies by state. |
| Allstate | Ride for Hire can cover a vehicle while waiting for a request and may provide coverage above the TNC’s coverage after pickup. Allstate also describes help with the deductible difference, subject to policy terms. | State availability, phase-specific limits, the deductible treatment and whether the coverage matches your platform and vehicle. |
| State Farm | The endorsement is called Transportation Network Company Driver Coverage, or Private Vehicle-For-Hire Company Operator Coverage in Washington, D.C. Selected personal-policy coverages may apply while logged into a TNC app, whether waiting or driving for passengers. | State availability and which options you have selected. Physical damage, rental, emergency road service and medical coverage depend on the corresponding coverages being on your policy. |
| Farmers | Its Rideshare option is added to an existing auto policy and is intended to fill the gap while logged in but before accepting a ride. | Ask an agent about the exact app phase, state and platform; do not assume the same protection applies to every service. |

How to choose the right policy
- Tell your insurer what you plan to do. Identify every rideshare or delivery platform you will use, and ask whether the insurer accepts that use in your state. Do this before you start driving.
- Map coverage to app phases. Ask separately about waiting for a request, driving to pickup after acceptance, and carrying a passenger. Clarify which protection comes from your personal policy, the endorsement and the TNC.
- Check vehicle and medical protection. Confirm whether collision, comprehensive, PIP or medical payments, and UM/UIM apply in each phase. Ask whether you must already carry a coverage on your personal policy for the endorsement to extend it.
- Compare deductibles and limits. Get the personal-policy and TNC deductibles, then ask whether the endorsement reimburses any difference and under what conditions. Compare liability limits and other coverage at equivalent levels.
- Get comparable local quotes. Use the same vehicle, driver details, coverage limits and deductibles with each insurer. Public insurer pages do not provide a meaningful nationwide premium comparison, so they cannot establish which company is cheapest for you.
- Review the policy documents before relying on a description. Confirm exclusions, app-phase definitions, state-specific terms and effective dates with the insurer or agent.
Does the same coverage work for Uber, Lyft and delivery apps?
Not necessarily. An endorsement may differ by state and platform, and delivery can be treated differently from passenger rides. Progressive says its coverage applies to delivery services in most states, while noting that how it interacts with delivery-platform insurance varies by state. Check the named platform and intended use with your insurer rather than assuming a rideshare endorsement covers Uber Eats, DoorDash or another delivery service.

Why there is no reliable national “best” or “cheapest” pick
Insurers’ public descriptions explain product features, not comparable quotes for the same driver, car, state, limits and deductibles. No comparable nationwide insurer premium dataset establishes a price winner, and a ranking cannot be validated without current local quote data and a clear methodology. Choose by confirmed coverage fit first, then compare equivalent quotes for your circumstances.
