The best residential proxy is the one whose session behavior, location, protocol, consent documentation, and billing model match your workload. Use rotating residential sessions when you need frequent IP changes or broad geographic testing; use sticky residential or ISP sessions when a multi-page workflow must keep one exit IP. Datacenter proxies can be the better-value choice when a target accepts hosting IPs and speed or cost matters more than residential trust signals.

Start with the workload, not the provider list

Residential proxies route requests through IP addresses associated with consumer ISP or mobile networks. Datacenter proxies use hosting infrastructure. Targets classify those network types differently, which affects likely block risk, speed, price, and geographic coverage. Rotation and persistence are separate choices: a rotating session supplies fresh exits, while a sticky session keeps one exit IP for a defined period.

Workload Usually the better fit Why
Localized search or ad verification across many regions Rotating residential Frequent fresh exits and country, state, city, or other location targeting.
Price monitoring across a broad set of public pages Rotating residential Spreads requests across changing residential exits; confirm the provider’s concurrency and bandwidth limits.
Login followed by several authenticated pages Sticky residential or ISP/static Keeps one exit IP for the session instead of changing identity between requests.
High-volume requests where the target accepts hosting IPs Datacenter Often faster or less expensive when residential network classification is unnecessary.
Mobile-network testing Mobile proxy pool Uses mobile-network addresses rather than fixed-line residential or datacenter addresses.

No source establishes one provider as best for every target. Completion rate depends on target defenses, geography, session policy, pool cleanliness, and workload, so treat vendor marketing as a starting point rather than a universal ranking.

Residential, ISP, datacenter, and mobile proxies compared

Residential proxies

These use addresses associated with consumer internet service providers or mobile networks. They can provide stronger residential network signals to a target, but they typically cost more than datacenter capacity and still vary by location, pool quality, and target defenses.

ISP or static residential proxies

Static residential (often called ISP) sessions are useful when one exit must remain stable across a login or multi-page workflow. Confirm how long a session can persist and whether the address is truly static for the period you need; session-duration limits differ by provider.

Datacenter proxies

Datacenter addresses come from hosting infrastructure rather than consumer ISPs. They can be the sensible value option when the target accepts them and your priority is throughput or cost. Choosing datacenter capacity solely because it is cheaper can backfire if the target applies stricter controls to hosting networks.

Mobile proxies

Mobile pools use addresses from mobile networks. They are a distinct network type, not simply a faster residential plan. Check whether the exact countries and session controls you need are available.

Rotating versus sticky sessions

Choose rotating sessions for changing identity

Per-request or scheduled rotation gives each request, or each short group of requests, a fresh exit. This fits broad geo testing, localized search, ad verification, and price intelligence where many independent fetches matter more than continuity. Ask how rotation is triggered, whether you can select a country, state, city, ZIP code, or ASN, and what concurrency is allowed.

Choose sticky sessions for continuity

A sticky session preserves one exit IP for a defined window. Use it for login flows, carts, dashboards, and any authenticated sequence in which an IP change can interrupt the workflow. Verify the maximum session length, what happens when an endpoint disappears, and whether you can start a new session deterministically.

Do not treat the choices as opposites

A project can use both: sticky sessions for authenticated checks and rotating sessions for independent public-page collection. Document the session policy for each job so a later change does not silently alter the identity pattern.

Selection checklist for a residential proxy

  1. Define the target and permitted use. Write down whether you are fetching public pages, checking ads, testing localization, comparing prices, or running an authenticated workflow. Read the target’s terms and the provider’s acceptable-use policy before sending traffic.
  2. Set the session behavior. Decide between per-request rotation, scheduled rotation, or a sticky window. Record the longest continuous session required.
  3. Verify geographic precision. Country targeting may be insufficient. Confirm availability at the state, city, ZIP, or ASN level for the exact places you need. Location inventory changes.
  4. Confirm protocols and limits. Check HTTP(S) and SOCKS5 support, concurrency caps, throughput, timeout behavior, and session-duration limits. A plan that supports your protocol but caps concurrent connections can still be impractical.
  5. Model bandwidth billing. Estimate request count and response size, then compare included gigabytes, overage rules, and whether retries consume bandwidth. Never compare a headline monthly price without its included data.
  6. Request sourcing and consent documentation. Ask whether residential users opted in to bandwidth sharing and whether the provider explains consent and compliance. A large pool is not proof of legitimate sourcing.
  7. Run a small production-like trial. Measure completion rate, block rate, latency, geographic accuracy, and error handling against the real target. Keep the test narrow enough that a weak result does not create a large bill.
  8. Recheck terms before committing. Prices, locations, pool counts, availability, and acceptable-use rules are volatile. Confirm them immediately before purchase, renewal, or publication.

How to read pool-size and price claims

Published pool counts are dated claims, not independent benchmarks. ColdProxy advertised a 70M+ global residential IPv4 pool across 195+ countries in 2026. TechRadar’s 2025/2026 review of Decodo cited 125 million global IP addresses across residential, mobile, and datacenter solutions. Those figures are not directly comparable: they cover different network mixes, dates, and counting methods.

For a concrete cost example, TechRadar’s 2025 static-residential comparison listed SOAX at $99 per month for 15 GB, equivalent to $6.60 per gigabyte. That is a dated review example, not a current universal rate. Ask every provider for the current included data, overage price, endpoint or session charges, and any minimum term.

Ethics, consent, and acceptable use

A residential address belongs to a consumer or mobile network, so sourcing deserves more scrutiny than a simple IP-count comparison. Ask for clear evidence that users opted in to bandwidth sharing and that the provider documents compliance. Reject a service that cannot explain where its residential traffic comes from.

Use only workloads permitted by the target and the proxy provider. “Residential” does not make an otherwise prohibited activity acceptable, and it does not guarantee that a target will allow your requests. Build rate limits, error handling, and an immediate stop condition into your client.

Testing a provider without wasting a month of budget

Use a representative sample

Test the same URLs, geographies, session lengths, and response sizes your production job will use. Include both successful pages and pages known to trigger redirects or heavier assets. Compare providers only after the same workload has run through each one.

Track the measurements that affect decisions

  • Completion rate: requests that return the expected page rather than a block, timeout, or malformed response.
  • Block rate: target denials or challenge pages, recorded separately from network errors.
  • Latency: connection and total response time by geography.
  • Geo accuracy: whether the observed location matches the requested country, state, city, ZIP, or ASN.
  • Error handling: how your client behaves on timeouts, expired sessions, and unavailable exits.
  • Cost: bandwidth consumed, retries, and any endpoint or concurrency charges.

Interpret results cautiously

A successful small test does not prove performance for every target or country. Defenses change, and a pool that works for public product pages may perform differently on an authenticated service. Keep the provider’s plan, test date, locations, and measured results in your procurement record.

Troubleshooting common failures

The exit appears in the wrong location

Cause: the provider may offer country-level routing but not the requested state, city, ZIP, or ASN, or its location database may be stale. Fix: verify the exact granularity in the plan, test the observed location, and select another endpoint or provider if precision is mandatory.

Requests fail when a workflow spans several pages

Cause: a rotating session is changing the exit IP. Fix: use a sticky residential or ISP session for the authenticated sequence and confirm its maximum duration.

Throughput is lower than expected

Cause: concurrency caps, distant exits, target-side throttling, or oversized responses. Fix: check the plan’s concurrency and timeout rules, reduce simultaneous requests, choose a nearer permitted location, and model response sizes before upgrading.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Many requests receive blocks or challenges

Cause: target defenses, an unsuitable network type, poor pool cleanliness, or an aggressive request pattern. Fix: verify that the workload is allowed, slow the request rate, compare residential with datacenter only where the target permits it, and test a different location or provider. Do not assume rotating addresses alone will solve a target-specific defense.

The bill is higher than expected

Cause: response size and retries consumed more bandwidth than the headline allowance, or the plan charges for endpoints or overages. Fix: inspect usage by job, cap retries, cache where appropriate, and recalculate cost using included gigabytes and overage rules.

A session ends before the job completes

Cause: the provider’s sticky-window limit or endpoint availability. Fix: confirm the documented session-duration limit, split the workflow into shorter units, or choose a plan with a longer permitted window.

For website screenshots, avoid building a proxy-and-browser stack

Residential proxies solve network-routing problems; they do not by themselves produce a clean, repeatable website screenshot. If the task is simply to capture a page, ScreenshotNeo is a separate screenshot API and MCP server for developers. It accepts one GET request and returns PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF output. Before capture, it accepts cookie or consent banners like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets. Bot checks, CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and each response identifies the result with X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers.
