Which Resident Evil game should you play first? Choose Resident Evil 2 for a survival-horror starting point, Resident Evil 7 biohazard for an atmosphere-focused horror story, or Resident Evil 4 if action is your priority. If you want to follow Ethan Winters’ story into Resident Evil Village, play Resident Evil 7 first. These are recommendations based on what you want from the series—not an official Capcom ranking.

The series began in 1996, and Capcom describes it as defining survival horror. Capcom’s Resident Evil Portal reports more than 100 million copies sold, but does not specify a year for that figure. Capcom’s Resident Evil Portal also sums up the series with the line, “Live or die: every decision mattered.”

Best starting point for survival horror fans
Resident Evil 2
Resident Evil 2 is a strong choice if you want a survival-horror introduction grounded in a clear crisis: Leon and Claire arrive in Raccoon City amid the t-virus outbreak and try to stay alive. That premise makes it a practical first pick for someone drawn to the series’ horror identity.
Resident Evil 7 biohazard
Choose Resident Evil 7 biohazard if the Baker residence and Ethan’s search for his wife sound more compelling to you. Capcom calls the house a place of “unspeakable horrors” and describes the game as Ethan’s first steps into survival horror. This is a separate setting and protagonist from Resident Evil 2; the two are alternative entry points rather than one being a prerequisite for the other.

Best option if you prioritize action
Resident Evil 4
Resident Evil 4 is worth considering when action matters more to you than starting with the survival-horror framing of Resident Evil 2 or Resident Evil 7. The official lineup confirms the game’s availability, but the source does not establish detailed gameplay mechanics or a measured action rating. Check a platform’s current game description and edition details if specific features are important to your choice.

Where Village fits in Ethan’s story
Resident Evil Village follows Ethan Winters after the Baker House incident. Capcom’s history places it three years after that incident and identifies it as a continuation of Ethan’s story. If you care about that narrative context, start with Resident Evil 7 biohazard; if you are choosing only by premise or platform, consider whether the earlier story is important to you.

Capcom announced on November 22, 2024 that the Resident Evil Remake Trilogy was available digitally for PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and PC (Steam). Its listed content includes Resident Evil 2 Deluxe Edition, Resident Evil 3, Resident Evil 3 Classic Costume Pack, Resident Evil Resistance, Resident Evil 4 Gold Edition, and Resident Evil 4 The Mercenaries. Capcom’s portal announces Resident Evil 2, Resident Evil 3, and Resident Evil 4 for Nintendo Switch 2 on October 16, 2026. As of October 7, 2026, that date was still upcoming; check the portal or Nintendo eShop for current release status.
